Week in Review: Week 121

It’s Sunday evening, I’m inside with the ac on as it was a very hot day…I can see the sky is looking beautiful down towards the harbor but I don’t have it in me to drive the 5 minutes to see it. I was going to try and shoot an outfit tonight by myself but…not happening. Summer comes and I just go to hell in a handbasket. Now that’s an odd expression! Okay, the week.

First of all, it was camp week at work, which means only a handful of our usual kids were there and many unfamiliar kids were there instead, for a week of…well, let me just show you. I can’t share the pictures here but I can give you the link to the camp week blog post I did -> Camp NSSA 2018

Monday night I saw the Mr. Roger’s movie “Won’t You Be My Neighbor.” Very endearing. Sad that he’s gone.

Tuesday I had dinner with friends…

Then we went to a little nearby beach for a short walk and sunset.

IMG_1986

Wednesday was National Sunglasses Day…

IMG_1991

And I found this little peekaboo view of the harbor through someone’s yard.

IMG_2019

I watched the sunset and a g’boy sat near me doing the same.

IMG_2018

Thursday night I was pooped and came home and just crashed on the sofa in the ac. For hours. It was delightful.

I bought half a pie.

I made it through the work week to Friday…and now I’m on VACATION!!!

Saturday, Katie and I drove into Brooklyn for Smorgasburg. We tried to do a photo shoot and it was ridiculous. There were so many people, it was so so hot, I was dripping and red faced and about to keel over. It’s like the worst photo shoot ever, ha. So, you have that to look forward to on Wednesday.

On our way to dropping Katie off at her friend’s apartment in the city we drove alongside protesters against Trump’s immigration policies marching across the Brooklyn Bridge. All we could do in the moment was honk, thumbs up and WOOHOO them in support. Thanks to Katie for the video.

It Was Very Hot.

IMG_2032

It took me THREE HOURS to drive home cuz Long Island.

Today I did work in the morning (was uncharacteristically productive) then went to the ex’s for his daughter’s graduation party. It’s too hot for me to be out among the people anymore. I can be 1) in the air conditioning or 2) at the beach. Those are my options til like mid-September. See ya then 🙂

OH! I totally forgot to include my 1 Second Every Day video in yesterday’s Month in Review post, so it’s going right here.

Hope y’all have a nice week!

Month in Review: April

Wow, I feel like April really flew by! We started the month still in snow and we’re finishing it up with a sunshiny day in the 60s. As this was a very work-busy week for me I don’t have much to share in Week in Review, so I’m going to do Month in Review again like last month and will resume WiR next week, when hopefully I will have something a little more interesting to share!

First I will say THANK YOU to all you lovely people who have been reading and following and commenting on my little blog…thanks to y’all, April was my most viewed month to-date, beating out the previous winner, August 2017, when my head-shaving post (see it here) was so widely shared and viewed. I’ve made such nice connections and friends…and have met some kindred spirits with interests beyond fashion. For someone like me who is naturally pretty introverted and what I call “a bad meeter,” it’s been such a nice way to connect with people without all the usual “in person” social anxieties. But that’s a story for another day (okay, Julia??).

All that said, my most viewed post in April was All Dressed Up & Yadda Yadda Yadda where I wore a colorful dress and sparkly cardigan…for no special reason. Sometimes you just gotta, you know??

img_1089

My personal favorite outfit in April was this colorful Russian doll looking peasant top over white jeans…maybe because it felt spring…and the temperatures finally felt the same! How sick is everyone getting of talking and hearing about The Winter That Would Not End?!?

Favorite Blogger Looks

My top three favorite blogger looks in April were:

Jenna Marie of Sincerely Jenna Marie has the casual-yet-modern look nailed with a basic white tee, faded blue denim and comfy sandals…but it’s the extra touch of the scarf tied on the bag that elevates this to me.

How cozy does Cheryl of Cheryl Shops look in this pretty pretty pink duster-length cardigan?? I love a basic white jeans + tee + cardigan look and this one is just dreamy. Not to mention that round straw tote!

(The last one did not respond in time to my email asking permission to share her photo here so I’m just including the link to the outfit and I hope you’ll go look!)

And the outlier of the bunch for me, this metallic pleated skirt with gorgeous teal blue sweater on Daniella of LellaVictoria. This look is so extra with all the metallics (those boots tho!) and yet so relaxed at the same time. Like, “Oh, do I look amazing?? I hadn’t noticed!”

Favorite Books

I did not do as much reading in April as I had been – my day job and blog work have been leaving me exhausted by 9pm most nights and if I try to read at that point I fall asleep within minutes. So I only read the one, but it was really really good. I gave it 5 stars on Goodreads and I give Very Few 5-star ratings.

It’s the emotional story of a Jewish family living in Poland during World War II, how they each have different experiences over the span of a decade. I don’t want to tell the ending, but it was a very moving, well-told story that I highly recommend – based on the experiences of the author’s own family.

We Were the Lucky Ones

Hopefully I will have more time for reading in May!

Favorite Movies

I *did* make time to go to a couple movies in April. I am subscribed to MoviePass, an app where for a sum below the price of going to ONE movie, you can go to a different movie EVERY DAY (this is not a sponsored post, I just really like the app). My favorite was “Outside In” with Edie Falco and Jay DuPlass. It was a quiet story about nice people – as a young adult he had taken the rap for a shooting and spent 20 years in prison. One of his high school teachers maintained a correspondence with him all that time and really advocated for his early parole. Once released his new life is difficult and their friendship is challenged. And that’s all I’ll say. But it’s well-acted, nice story. (click image for trailer)

Favorite Products

A favorite product I bought this month, and this is a little embarrassing (!), but I can get stinky feet (probably cuz I don’t wear socks. i hate socks.) and I’ve tried all kinds of sprays and powders over the years and nothing has ever done a really great, long-lasting job, BUT…after reading a ton of reviews on the internet, I finally invested a whopping $12.95 on a shoe deodorizer/foot odor eliminator from Amazon. I spray it in my sneakers 1-2 times a week and it has greatly improved the situation. If I really stick my nose into the shoe, I can still slightly smell the foot odor…but the scent of the spray really masks the foot smell from a reasonable distance away (most people would not be sticking their noses into your shoes). And then the whole apartment has this nice lemon verbena/mint/eucalyptus scent that is both refreshing and energizing. Oh, I also sprayed it on my car seats when Caleb had a bit of a messy accident back there (don’t judge, he’s an old man) and the poop smell was gone the next day!

Lumi Outdoors Extra Strength Odor Eliminator

Monthly Mash-Up

I’ve been enjoying an app called 1 Second Every Day where you post a picture or video to it daily (or catch up whenever you want, it doesn’t judge) and at the end of the month (or week or year or whatever time frame you select) it “mashes” them together as one-second clips that are savable and sharable. I’ve been posting them on Instagram but they fit into the Month in Review theme here, so…

And that is all there is for April! Week in Review will be back next Monday….

Springtime Plus Size Try-on Haul

So, spring shopping has begun. Well, spring trying-on and buying-and-returning has begun. I only need (want) a couple new clothing items to round out my warm weather wardrobe:

  • cropped/ankle length white jeans
  • a couple pairs of colored pants that aren’t jeans
  • some tops that are a little nicer than just tee shirts – like button downs and tunics
  • 1-2 lightweight knit sweaters
  • a dress. I don’t NEED another summer dress but I saw this dress in the Ellos catalog and I can’t get it out of my head. I need to at least try it on.

Boy, when I make it into a list it seems like more than I was thinking. But in reality I know I’ll never find all these things to fit, so…the list will narrow as I go along.

Last weekend I stopped into my local Avenue store and tried on a few things. I was pretty firm with my black and white palette. I feel like I start out every season with black and white, then just add in a few colors later on.

avenue tryon 1

These were supposed to be ankle length but I’m short and my legs are short, so. And the cuff wasn’t sewn-in or anything so it was just going to come right down and then the pants are too long. I’ve tried cuffing jeans and I’m just not good at that sort of thing. They’re crooked, they don’t stay up, etc. I need the manufacturer to do it for me and put in a couple nice stitches!

avenue tryon 2
Avenue White Washed Rolled Ankle Jean size 22

Since the ankle length was too long, I tried on the capris thinking they might just go to my ankle. But they’re just weird. They’re not as neat as a true skinny jean would be but they’re too tight for a straight leg…and the bottom had like a kick flare. Which is not flattering on my short thick legs.

avenue tryon 5
Avenue Washed Capri Jean in White size 22

So I went up a size and it was no better.

avenue tryon 4
Avenue Washed Capri Jean in White size 24

I tried a pair of wide-leg pants in a black and white geometric…but my legs are so thick that “wide leg” fits me like a tapered cut! If the waist wasn’t pulled up all the way to my bra I might have bought them!

avenue tryon 6
Avenue Dot Relaxed Pull-on Pant size 22

Then, always the search for white tee/tank/tunic SOMETHING WHITE. Sigh. This should not be so hard.

avenue tryon 7
Avenue Reversible Tank size 22/24

And, just because it was white and on sale…I tried this ruffly blouse on. It wasn’t bad but I don’t really have a need for that, so…back it went. Back it all went.

avenue tryon 3
Avenue Choker Cascading Ruffle Neck Blouse size 22/24

I’d been excited to try a couple things from Loft’s new plus size collection. The items were nice but the fit was just a little off. I will definitely try something else from there because I really like the styles and when they go on sale the prices are not unreasonable.

Loft Items:

Not much luck on this first go-round!

What do you have on your spring wish list??

Styling Four Plus Size Looks from One Blazer!

I have been dying to add a longline blazer to my wardrobe since I started following Lizzie Hadfield of Shot from the Street a couple years ago…and now I also drool over the outfits of Emma Hill for the same reason. They’ve both got this super cool, minimal, slightly-masculine-tailoring-but-in-a-very-chic-way thing down. They make it look effortless. Us mere mortals have to work at it a bit more…and on a round plus size body, that lean minimal look never looks quite right. But I just keep plugging away and one of these days I’ll get it! In the meantime I’m coming up with some outfits I’m pretty happy with – and this Karen Kane soft structure blazer has starred in several of them.

First I created an office look, with a black and white polka dot blouse and black cropped trousers with black loafers. I don’t know what was up with my face!

Polka-dot blouse from Who What Wear/Target, no longer available. Similar here and here in plus size and here and here in straight size / Black cropped Harper trousers from Old Navy

Adding the Third Piece of the blazer pulled the outfit together and made it more office appropriate. And, yay, face back to normal!

Karen Kane Open Tweed Blazer, size 3x, no longer available. Comparable here and here in plus size and here and here in straight size.

The second look is very casual, maybe weekending with the girls or running errands.

Striped cold-shoulder top from Rainbow Shops, size 3x. No longer available. Comparable here and here in plus size and here and here in straight size.

Take it up a notch with blazer and scarf!

The third look is a little more artsy, starting with a solid black base layer…(ooh, there’s That Face again!).

Black Joan Vass Plus Tunic, size 3x. No longer available, comparable here and here in plus size and here and here in straight size. Black denim skinnies from Charlotte Russe, size 22. Booties from Avenue, no longer available. Comparable here and here. (old)/Turquoise Necklace: Vintage. Comparable here.

Dress it up a bit with the blazer over top!

fashion schlub bettye rainwater long island plus sized fashion blogger 2.28.18 6 resized

And lastly, another very casual look, but this time in pastels and white (GASP! WHITE JEANS IN FEBRUARY?!? WHAT IS SHE THINKING?? I’m thinking I can wear white denim whenever the heck I want).

Pink long sleeve tee from Old Navy, size 4x. No longer available, comparable here and here in plus size and here and here in straight size. White denim Gloria Vanderbilt Amanda jeans, size 22W short.

And a blazer makes it a little less casual and a little more polished…even though it’s still basically an outfit with jeans and trainers!

Do you have one piece that can complete many different outfits?

There’s a little video if you want to see all the outfits in action (and hear me blather on about one thing or another). If you watch and like the video I’d really appreciate if you’d give it a thumbs up on YouTube.

I’m linking up today with Emma at Style Splash and her Style With a Smile Link-up! Make sure you check out her blog and the other lovelies linking up there this week! I’ve made many new bloggy friends through link-ups…you might, too!

How to Pack for a Warmer Climate

I’M GOING AWAY! ON VACATION! TO SOMEPLACE WARM!

Not that there’s anything wrong with the cold, but it *will* be nice for one week to be in mild temps so I can do stuff without bundling up or my face hurting. But it can be a BEAR to figure out what to bring to a warmer climate when you live in a cold one. So I made a little video about how I whittled down from Many Items to Fewer, More Practical, Items. It’s practically a little baby capsule wardrobe.

It can be especially challenging when there are multiple people involved and you don’t know what everyone is going to want to do, so you sort of have to prepare for every possible contingency…WITHOUT having your suitcase go over weight (50lbs in this case).

And since I just did a video and no still shots from my wardrobe brainstorming (thinking pretty highly of my methods right about now), I will share a few pics that I never shared from last fall, of a cute’n’cozy sweater from Gwynnie Bee.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater plus size fashion blogger 12.08.17 4 resized

This is *not* something I’ll be packing to go away. It’s by Rachel Roy, who does a really nice plus size line. One of my favorite summer dresses is from her, you can see it here.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater plus size fashion blogger 12.08.17 3 resized

I loved that this cardigan was exactly the same length as the dress below it. It’s like they were made for one another. But it would have been equally cute over blue wash or black denim.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater plus size fashion blogger 12.08.17 1 resized

Look at all the pretty colors that are in it! I’m just wearing a solid black base layer underneath – black dress, black tights, black booties – but the outfit looks very colorful just because of this one item. The beauty of the base layer.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater plus size fashion blogger 12.08.17 5 resized

Ha ha, funny story. For some reason, I don’t remember now why, I took the sweater off part way through shooting, oh I think I wanted some pictures with it just over my shoulders, which looks cool when I see other people do it but when I do it it just looks like I have no arms. But when I put it back on I turned the shawl collar to the inside so it looks like there’s no collar…and I love a nice shawl collar cardigan. I’m such a derp.

Okay, so it wasn’t that funny.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater plus size fashion blogger 12.08.17 6 resized
Look, no collar. D’oh.

And now our time together has come to an end. Almost.  Take a look at the video. Tell me if you think I’m not taking enough stuff. I did just order a pair of white jeans that I hope will fit so they can go with me. I think they’ll “warm weather-ify” all my black and grey tops. Do you find you usually end up with too much on trips…or not enough? Or the right amount but just of the wrong things…???

Resolutions + Plus Size Try-on Haul Video

day 4

I’m still working on my resolutions for the new year. I’m not usually a hard-and-fast resolution sorta gal; I usually pick a fun thing I want to challenge myself to do more of – like drink more or wear more jewelry, ha ha. But after 2017 I do sort of feel like I need to get some things in order. I need to get PREPARED. That’s one of the resolutions, but I’m still fine-tuning (that seems to be a recurrent theme of the new year also) it and most of them…but the one I’m certain of is…to pamper myself.

girly dreams 2

To have flowers in the house, go for mani-pedis and foot massages and get my hair done when I have hair again. Have a facial. Not just pampering, but being kind and gentle with myself. Last year was a hard year. It was painful and exhausting and took a lot out of me. I need to feed myself and care for myself and build my mind and heart back up. Get a comfortable sofa so I can relax and read and enjoy looking out the window. Ask friends for help when things are too hard. Eat good food. Be Good to my body. Nourish it, stretch it, exercise it. Rest it. If I need to sleep all day once in a while, do that without feeling guilty. Make my home more pleasing. Empty the corners of boxes and piles of stuff. Create lovely vignettes to enjoy when I come home. Live in silence when I want, live in music when I want. Just be good to myself.
my morning 10
I’m still working out the technicalities on this one, but one year (I think 2011) I did “Do Something New Every Week,” and that was really a good one but it was more Big Picture things, like “do a 5k,” “get reiki.” etc. I think this year I might do a “Try Something New Every Day” resolution. I know that sounds imposing but they can be Very Small Things: go to a new bagel shop, turn down a different street when driving home, make a new recipe, try on a pair of shoes you wouldn’t normally try. It’s just the point of keeping your mind open to new and untried things rather than being comfortable and settled in routine.
That’s it for resolutions for now…and onto something NEW and exciting that got its start in 2017 but just went live in 2018 – and that is that my new blog-friend Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style shared Fashion Schlub as one of her “Styled By…” posts! I’ve been reading such nice comments from her regular readers, I’m so grateful to her! Be sure to take a look at her blog – she has such an adventurous and fun fashion sense – I think you’ll really enjoy her blog – AND she’s a sweetheart, to boot!

And this week’s weekly vlog is a plus size winter try-on haul showing clothes from Old Navy, Woman Within and Charlotte Russe. Take a look and let me know what you think – I think my videoing and editing skills are getting a little better!

All photography by me.

It’s Almost December!

fashion schlub bettye rainwater plus size fashion blogger 11.20.17 7 resized

So! I have been toying with the idea of doing another 30-day challenge in January – which is challenging myself to wear a different outfit every day in January, but now I’m thinking that, instead, maybe I’ll do Vlogmas (vlogging every day in December leading up to Christmas)! I’m SO not prepared for that, but I’m a big believer in just jumping in first and figuring it out later…and vlogging Every Single Day will help me get up-to-speed on All Things Vloggy pretty darn quick!

fashion schlub bettye rainwater plus size fashion blogger 11.20.17 2 resized

It could be awful..for me AND you, ha! But I think I’m going to give it a go…if I can’t do it, I can’t do it…but I’ll certainly give it the old college try. They’ll be short, maybe 5-10 minutes a day, more or less. So…I know you’re excited, ha ha! If you want to witness this, just subscribe to my Fashion Schlub YouTube channel.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater plus size fashion blogger 11.20.17 5 resized

That aside, this is another day of tripod/remote shutter selfies. On this day, a man walked his dog up to where I was shooting and proceeded to ask questions about what I was doing, including “would you like to take a picture with Miss Wiggles?” Uh, OF COURSE!!!

fashion schlub bettye rainwater plus size fashion blogger 11.20.17 6 resized

Then a town worker truck pulled up, and they knew one another, so THAT guy got out of the truck and started asking me questions about what I was doing…and then they both stood there watching me. AWKWARD. Suffice it to say I didn’t get too many pictures that day. And they’re really not doing this outfit justice, because I LOVE this potato sacky dress from ASOS Curve (their plus size section) and faux leather jacket by Chelsea & Theodore via Gwynnie Bee…and I loved them together. But I didn’t get to check my car window reflection between shots so my wig was wacky and the jacket was askew and my tights are dirty. But that’s real life, so. There ya go.

Speaking of Real Life, I’ve just uploaded another video, “Switching Out My Plus Size Wardrobe from Summer to Winter: Part 2,” wherein I get all my cold weather clothes out of storage, cull through them to decide what stays and what goes, and add the “stayers” into my closet. It’s scintillating stuff, be sure to watch.

What I Wore:

* Asos Navy Ripple Stitch Dress, size 22
* Chelsea & Theodore Taupe Drape Front Faux Leather Jacket, via Gwynnie Bee, size 2x

Learning Curves

fashion schlub bettye rainwater long island plus size fashion blogger 11.21.17 1 resized

They say old dogs can’t learn new tricks. When my now ex-husband and I were first dating his father had two dogs that lived mostly out in the yard. Seven-year-old Princess kept herself entertained by chewing on rocks (and had whittled-down razor sharp teeth to prove it!). I figured she was bored…and since sometimes I would be there while my then boyfriend was sleeping (he worked odd hours) or working, I decided to spend some time with Princess. We started out just going for walks but she was so attentive I figured I would try teaching her a couple things. She ate it up and we were soon in the obedience ring claiming trophies and perfect scores. The point of the story? At seven years old, she was the fastest learner I have ever known. The other point of the story? Old dogs CAN learn new tricks.

I’m a pretty old dog…and I’m trying to teach myself some new tricks – film-making, vlogging, and now, shooting myself with a wireless shutter release. It sounds so simple, but there are endless mistakes to be made.

Like this…

fashion schlub bettye rainwater long island plus size fashion blogger 11.21.17 4 resized

And this…

fashion schlub bettye rainwater long island plus size fashion blogger 11.21.17 10 resized

It’s one thing to make the camera take a picture from a distance. It’s another thing to get the subject in focus! And get all the desired body parts in the frame! So I hope you’ll bear with me as I master this new trick. This time of year (early darkness) it’s harder than ever to get people to take blog pictures for me so I’m going to have to rely on this new method quite a bit. I *will* get better (woof!) but it may take a little time.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater long island plus size fashion blogger 11.21.17 7 resized

The other new trick I’m working on is video-ing (it’s probably a little optimistic and premature for me to call what I’m doing “film-making”!) and vlogging. It’s *really* time-consuming and not nearly as “fixable” as photography. So my YouTube vlogs are going to be bad…until they’re not. I’m a person that learns by doing, so…I’l just keep doing until I learn.

Me standing in a hole, next to a garbage can. I’m knocking it out of the park with my selfie photography, oui?

This mauvey pink chenille cardigan is the one from the newest video “Plus Size Fall Haul Part 2” (could that BE a more compelling title? How can you NOT watch it?). I put it over the polka dot dress that you last saw under a wine-colored duster in a What I Wore This Week post, here.

It’s finally cold enough for the fleece-lined footless tights. Yay? The polka-dotted Karen Kane dress is my favorite swing dress style and this one is in a nice weight fabric that just skims over the body and doesn’t show off any lumps or bumps.

Switching Out My Wardrobe from Summer to Winter

fashion schlub snow overlay

So, I FINALLY got around to switching out my warm weather wardrobe for cold. We had such a lovely long pleasant Indian summer here on Long Island, I just couldn’t bring myself to do it any earlier even though I’d had to pull an item or two out for the few chillier days…and I had already bought a couple new things (see Fall Haul). The video got so so long as I explained my reasons for leaving this in or taking that out…that I decided to split it into two videos. So, Part 1 is taking out warm weather items…and Part 2 is putting in cold weather items. Ha, it kinda sounds like watching paint dry, but I know I LOVE watching this kind of stuff, so…maybe you will, too!

I’m still working on improving the production quality of my videos. I realize that in my Fall Haul video it got so dark it was practically impossible to tell a black item from a dark green one from a plaid one. My apologies. I’m very aware of the imperfections and will rectify them asap. I begged a good friend to go with me to my storage unit yesterday so we could dig out (among other things) my tub of lighting equipment from my vintage clothing selling days, so hopefully that will be better soon. And I think I’ve resolved the lens focus motor noise.

Meanwhile, I’m still trying to round out my cold weather wardrobe by online shopping like a madwoman…and returning like five things for every one kept – online plus size shopping is a Very Slow Process. But so there will be ANOTHER Fall Haul video soon…I promise not as big as the first!

Thanks so so much for sticking around while I learn the ropes about videoing and YouTube. I appreciate every like and view I get! I hope you’ll watch “Switching Out My Wardrobe from Summer to Winter: Part 1” and give it a thumbs up!

2017 Plus Size Fall Haul #1 (with video!)

I finally bit the bullet and purchased some new plus size fall wardrobe items online…and I thought I’d share with you my thoughts about the items I got.

I purchased items from online shopping sites: Full Beauty/Woman Within/Jessica London, Forever 21, Asos, Thred-Up, Rainbow Shops, Gwynnie Bee and Old Navy. These are all in size 2x or 3x. It wasn’t such a successful shop and most of the items have already been returned…and as soon as I get all my refunds I’ll give it another try.

I rant a bit about spending money on “basics,” when they’re really so simple and invisible…and about brands using inconsistent sizing.

I apologize for it being SO so long. I considered cutting it in half and doing a Part 1 and Part 2, but….let’s just move on with it, shall we?

I spent almost the entire day last Saturday recording this fall haul; this vlog stuff has a steep learning curve! It took me so long, by the last couple of outfits the video is so dark you can barely see the color of the items I’m wearing! I also committed the cardinal sin of videoing, which is filming in portrait orientation (instead of landscape) – GAH! I’m having some video/photography challenges in the new apartment still, so bear with me while I get my space and lighting figured out!

If you have any questions about the items, please comment here or in the comments section underneath the video.
