Baby Steps: Match Made in Seven: February
Welcome to the monthly edition of Match Made in Seven! We are an international group of fashion bloggers who meet virtually once a month. One of us chooses a theme each month, and that can be anything: a book, music, a color, a movie. And then we all style an outfit based on that theme.
This month’s theme was chosen by Emma of Style Splash and is NEON!!! See my interpretation of the theme below…and be sure to take a look at my fellow bloggers to see how they have interpreted the theme this month.

And now, on with our show!
I titled this post “Baby Steps,” because that’s how I go into unfamiliar territory. And when Emma chose neon for this month’s theme I thought, that is really unfamiliar territory for me! Like I said last month for the punk theme, I lived through those punk and neon eras…but I really didn’t dress that way. I’ve always dressed pretty conservatively.
So I realized I would have to figure out how to take a baby step into the world of neon…and how you could, too. And it’s pretty simple. Start small. A scarf – like I did. A watchband. Stripes on sneakers or down the sides of leggings. There are plenty of ways to include just a little bit of a new trend into your wardrobe. If you find you’re comfortable with that, and like it, it’s easy enough to branch out – a tee shirt, a tote bag. And after that? Dresses! Moto jackets! Floofy coats! The world is your neon oyster!
But for me, a scarf was a good start. I actually thought this was a little more yellow-green when I saw it on the website, but…whatever (now I’ve got my St. Patricks’ Day look!). I thought I would add it to a very stark neutral outfit and let it brighten the whole thing up. I think it might also be fun worn as a shawl on a summer evening with an all-white look…or over one of my 17 (barely) different blue chambray dresses.
Don’t forget to check out the other bloggers in the group to see how they styled their neon look!

Love your neon green scarf, Bettye! You look lovely and I really enjoy your poses and photography as well. Great job!

Thanks, Debbie! I’m just starting to make my way around to everyone else now to see what they did!

That’s exactly how I’d be wearing neon. I might have one piece but that could be a stretch!! But you’re right…it’ll be perfect for St. Pat’s day, and it does brighten up any outfit!!
XOXO

I actually really liked it once I saw it in the photos. It really brightened the outfit (and me!) up! And now no St Patty’s Scramble!

It is definitely bright! I can’t say I’ll be running out and getting something neon though… just not my color or my style. Good for you for pushing yourself though!
bettyewp
Ha, it was a leap of faith purchasing that online…but in reality, I really like it and will be wearing it again! I was happily surprised!

I really like the idea of using that as a shawl over a summer top or dress as the evening cools down. Would tuck away nicely in a bag or glovebox. I could do that, otherwise just not a neon kinda gal 🙂
bettyewp
I look forward to seeing how I can get more use out of it in the summer!
Sonja Van de Sande
I love your pictures! You look nice in it specially in that one with the phone!
I also don’t have a lot of neon clothing, but now I remember my neon Pink scarf 🤭
bettyewp
Ha ha the phone was a lucky find! We don’t have too many pay phones hanging around anymore. When I was little and we’d go to the airport my cousin and I would I would run down the long banks of pay phones, sticking our fingers in the coin return slots, being rewarded with dimes just often enough to keep us going. No such simple fun for kids today!

I’m not a big wearer of neon but we’re having a 1974 party in a couple of months so I bought a jumpsuit pattern from 1974 and some pretty much neon (not quite as bright as your beautiful scarf which, by the way, I would so wear) doubleknit polyester fabric. Yep….I’m jumping in with both feet. I’m going to tone it down with the neck scarf, though…..just a little neon green in that :/ I agree with you, though, I’ll do bits and pieces of neon. However, when I wear a neon pink shirt to the gym, I always get comments and compliments on it. Great post and I’ll head over to check out the other ladies’ suggestions.

A 1974 party sounds fun! I was 14 and certainly not wearing neon OR jumpsuits 🙂
Wait, you’re MAKING a jumpsuit?? I’m impressed! I hope you’re planning to share a picture somewhere – on your blog? Def let us know!
Sarah
Love it. What a fun pop of color. I’m going to try some myself!
bettyewp
Woohoo, you must share a photo!
Iris
Oh, love the scarf – I’m usually all about bright colors. This scarf goes so well with the dark, more bland outfit. I love the idea of wearing it as a shawl with white – looking forward to seeing that when the weather is a smidge warmer. 🙂 I love that coat too, it looks nice and snuggly and warm.

Yeah, I’ve had this coat two winters now and never really shared it specifically on the blog. I don’t wear it a whole lot, though I basically like it. I just usually end up in my comfy and casual orange one.

Bettye,
You are SO smart to just dipping your toe! This was another challenge for me, too! Darn that Emma! Haha! I had to laugh at your “the world is a neon oyster.” Too cute! I wrote in my post to start small but didn’t take my own advice. Oh, well.
Well done. I wonder what next month will bring. ..

Yep, I’m a dipper. Well, on some things. Others, I jump right in. But neon? Ha ha, seemed safest to take it slow and easy 🙂 Yes, very curious about what next month’s theme will be!
Emma Peach
I was seriously having doubts about my choice too at one point but I do like a challenge! Starting with a scarf is a very sensible idea…and it looks great with the dark top and coat!

Whoa, well, misery DOES kinda love company, so it makes me feel kinda better that you were worried about it too…and YOU PICKED IT! Ha. Anyway, it all worked out for the best, I think everyone did a great job…and I’m excited to hear what next month’s theme will be!
Nancy
That works really well with all the darker colors! I have to say that I actually like this neon scarf! Haha, you will see me wear neon much more after this!
Deborah Stinedurf
I love that scarf! I’m so glad you told the 80’s they couldn’t have it back…lol! You’re right about baby steps. There are always small ways to incorporate just about any trend into your look.

I already have another top I think the neon scarf will look really good with…but maybe I’ll save that for St Paddy’s Day!
