Where Bloggers Live: My Favorite Recipes
Welcome to the monthly edition of Where Bloggers Live. It’s kind of like HGTV’s “Celebrities at Home,” but…Bloggers! Who doesn’t like to peek behind the scenes and see inside people’s homes and lives? Every month a group of six bloggers share their work-spaces, homes, towns, and more!
This month is a favorite topic: FOOD 🙂
Probably my #1 Favorite thing to make for myself…and that others always ask for…and it’s the EASIEST THING IN THE WORLD…is marinated steak tidbits. I get a nice cut of beef – my mother always used sirloin/london broil, but I feel like what USED to be good is no longer as good, somehow – so I usually get a tenderloin or New York strip (is it called New York strip everywhere or just in New York?). Sirloin/London Broil WORKS it’s just not as tasty or tender to me. I cut it up into pretty tiny cubes (I like to stick the whole steak in the freezer for an hourish til it gets firm enough to cut easily), then dump the cubes and a good amount of soy sauce (Kikkoman is my soy sauce of choice. I use a LOT of soy sauce in my cooking.) into a ziplock baggie. Marinate for about 24 hours. Overnight would be fine, it just works out this way for me cuz I marinate one evening and then cook it the next evening.
The cooking part is FAST. I put my crappy aluminum skillet on the stove and set the heat to high. When it’s super hot (a drop of water jumps and sizzles), I turn on the overhead fan and dump in the steak cubes (I’ve drained the excess soy sauce off in a strainer at the same time I turned on the stove burner. But you don’t want any extra liquid/moisture in the pan cuz you want the meat to sear not sautee). It’s gonna smoke. A lot. Hence the overhead fan.
After barely a minute, I flip the cubes…give it about another 30 seconds then remove from heat. NOW I put in a pat-ish amount of better (I use Earth Balance) and let it coat the steak cubes.
Transfer quickly to plate or bowl so the meat doesn’t keep cooking from the hot pan.
Done. I mean, it literally cooks under 3 minutes. I sort of eyeball the color of the cubes as I’m cooking. I like my steak rare (moo) but like a nice tasty sear on the outside. And the cubes are cut so small that they cook VERY quickly.
Normal people might serve this with rice or potatoes and some kind of vegetable. I’m happy with just a bowl of steak. I’ve never been a meal = 3 things on a plate person. One bowl of steak tidbits, one chicken thigh, one bag of doritos – each of those count as an entire meal to me.

Oh wow, now that’s my kind of cooking. Sounds really tasty and relatively easy to make. I just might have to try it one of these days.

Well, this works for me! Simple, easy, and steak! We are quite adept at setting off the smoke alarm in our kitchen, so this has all the ingredients that I’m used to. Also, your food groups are quite similar to mine…a bag of Doritos is a perfect meal for me as well. I just had a bad of Cretors cheese and caramel popcorn for late lunch the other day…took me right through dinner. It’s the simple things!

Yum…..the butter melting at the end does make it so incredibly delicious. In Virginia it is still a NY strip.

Wow that looks yummy and FAST. And of course could be eaten with a side dish or as part of a rice + veg type combo. Will have to try this!

That sounds delicious! We always have London Broil here and I never know what to do with it. I’d add in rice and vegetables for a stir fry.
Also, I want chopsticks now.

I don’t know if it’s a little affected, but I’m enjoying it (using chopsticks). And when i go to Korea i don’t want to be The Wyt Person Who Always Asks for Silverware 🙂 Plus, it’s just kind fun. Like I’m eating AND winning at some physical endeavor!

Quick and tasty, my kind of recipe. I think PC would love this. And wouldn’t miss the veggies for a second. I would probably serve it over jasmine rice. We have started eating quite a bit of it. I add a little coconut milk to it to sweeten it. The sweetness might compliment the flavors of the steak.
Bought us chopsticks to slow down our eating. PC is coordinated and didn’t struggle like I did. Could easily starve to death if I had to eat every meal with them. I admire your persistence at perfecting their use.

That’s a quick and yum recipe. Thanks for sharing.
