That Time My Daughter Dressed Me
Katie’s home! For a little while, anyway. I asked her to put together an outfit from my closet. I’ve been looking at the same items for so long I’m no longer “seeing” new combinations, and I was hoping a pair of fresh eyes would come up with something different.
The first outfit she came up with – white jeans, a white v-neck tee and my green utility “shacket” (ugh) – I put it on, looked in the mirror and said “I look like a hospital orderly.” She was like DAMN! She hadn’t seen it before I said that, but once seeing it she couldn’t unsee it, so we moved to Outfit #2. This very classic black and white combination, which I honestly would not have worn on my own – I would have put a third piece over it – the duster length black cardi – but I liked it.
She added the two necklaces that have a repeating round pendant theme, but, again, I would never have put them together on my own. I like the trend of multiple length layering necklaces, but I never thought of these two as working well together, but now that I’ve seen them on, I like them together. Thanks, Katie! She kept the earrings simple since the necklaces were so…much? And the cognac slides broke up the simpleness of the black and white.
Black and white is such a classic color combo, but I think any solid color over white works – navy, grey, red, pink, etc. I can’t wait for the fall to wear my favorite grey turtleneck over the white jeans…yes, I will wear my white jeans after Labor Day!
It was a good exercise to let someone else style me. Do you ever let someone else “dress you”??
What I’m Wearing:
- Black Joan Vass tunic, size 3x. No longer available, similar here and here in plus sizes, and here and here in straight sizes.
- White Gloria Vanderbilt Amanda tapered plus size jeans, size 22W short.
- Cognac Steve Madden slides
Thanks to Katie for the styling and the photos!

GASP! White jeans after labor day. How could you? 🙂 Love the black and white. I probably wouldn’t have thought of that either. I finally have a couple more solid tops in my closet. I always seem to gravitate towards figured ones – or maybe there are just more figured ones out there on sale. Anyway, great outfit/great photos/glad Katie’s home.

I absolutely think that someone else’s eyes can be so beneficial when we are styling our clothes. I always say I get into ruts—it’s just human nature!!
And layering those necklaces is absolutely perfect!! Yay Katie!!

Love this combination. I love the black and white, But my favorite element is the layered necklaces. Your daughter didn’t excellent job. Sometimes fresh eyes are what we need. Plus it is so much fun to have our daughters around.

Betty I think the outfit is awesome! Glad you didn’t cover it up it’s very summery this way.

Thanks, Maria! Yeah, my natural inclination would have been to put my thin knit black duster cardigan over it…but once I had this on and saw the pictures, I was fine with it the way it was (but come fall…ha!). A good exercise to let someone else dress you!

I absolutely love your look and your daughter has a great style sense. There are times when my mom also asks for my help in styling her outfits. And I find now that I have two daughters of my own they will tell me when something don’t quite look great on me #blogcrush

That’s nice that you and your daughters and your mother can all share that. My mother’s favorite criticism of my clothing was always “you look like you’re going to a tacky party.” Ha. THANKS, MOMMY 🙂 Granted, that was in the 70s and teens were not the epitome of fashion…like they are now!
