Fall is For Being Bold
After summer’s whites, neutrals and pastels, I’m looking forward to the warm, rich, bold colors of fall – mustard, golden yellow, ochre, sienna, copper, cinnamon (yum). I wonder if it’s an unconscious desire to “warm up” by wearing spicy colors during the colder parts of the year. Whatever the reason, it’s deliciously beautiful.
A friend and I were in Brooklyn in the middle of September on a glorious clear, cool, sunny day. After lunching at a southern comfort food “hole in the wall” in Bed-Stuy, we stopped at a bakery for slices of cake (dragging my birthday out as long as humanly possible) then we ended up at a park in Bushwick near where I used to live in Brooklyn. We took our cake and found a bench in the center of the park where we could watch children running, men skateboarding, and some pretty serious volleyball.
Since we were going to be walking around a little, but not a lot, I was able to dress in light layers. The geometric print top is sleeveless and rayon, so quite light and easy to wear on a mild day. The golden yellow cardigan is also very thin, a rayon cotton blend, so even with the two on I was not too hot on a sunny day. I get really hot really fast so I always have to be mindful what I’m wearing on a day when I’m going to be doing a lot of walking. This day was mostly riding in the air conditioned car and walking for short spurts. And sitting. My favorite.
This day, so many people were enjoying the park. I love being able to just sit and watch that. And the light was amazing through the trees. I’m a sucker for beautiful light.
Of course I’m wearing my favorite dark wash (now faded to perfection) Gloria Vanderbilt Amanda jeans. Sadly, due to lots of wearings, they’re thinning out on the insides of the thighs. I bought the same exact pair but haven’t worn them yet cuz I know they’re not going to feel as wonderful as these. But soon I’ll have to bite the bullet and just do it. I should do it before these go for good so they’ll at least be started on the breaking in period.
I have such a nice memory of this lovely day. I wish I had a cherry mango ice right now!
I love this Bobeau top – look at all the colors in it! I can wear it with a navy topper, golden yellow, rust, wine, blush pink!
The golden yellow cardi is sort of a bold color for me…but I’m loving it!
What colors are you looking forward to wearing this fall??
What I’m Wearing
- Bobeau graphic print top, size 3x – on Super Sale right now for less than $18!!!
- Old Navy golden yellow cardigan, size 3x. Also in hunter green, red, deep plus wine, light heather grey, and black. Also available in straight sizes here, in even more colors!
- Gloria Vanderbilt Amanda jeans, 22W short in Scottsdale blue. Right now there are tons of colors available in many sizes but they sell out fast!
- Adidas Cloudfoam trainers. This year’s version here. These are THE most comfortable sneakers I have ever had. It’s the Cloudfoam. It’s magical.

A appreciated, colorful post on a grey and windy day here in Bavaria!
How I do like the area you’re living. I once visited NYC and Marthas Vineyard and absolutely loved it.
This yellow cardigan suits you. Obviously you can do *cool* and *warm* colors similarly.
Fashion Schlub
Where did you visit in NY, Barbara? New York is nice in that there are so many different landscapes and populations. You can be in a totally different feeling kind of place every day with just a short drive.
I’ve never really felt I had a “tone.” I guess everybody’s something, and while there are colors I just don’t personally care for, I’ve never put on a color that I thought looked bad on me. Ha, that sounds so “how great am I? EVERY color looks good on me” ha. I really didn’t mean it like that.
I’m going to stop talking now 🙂

I love fall colors – they are definitely my favorites. Love your outfit – it not only looks comfty but attractive. The sweater is a great color – again, my favorite! And, the Gloria Vanderbilt jeans – the only kind I’ll wear. I actually got several pair of like new ones at an online thrift store recently – 5 pair for what one pair cost – my kind of bargain. Since that’s pretty much what I live in and all of mine were ready to go, I’m a happy camper.

I love fall colors, too…once I get over my initial resistance at letting summer go 🙂
Woohoo, great find on the thrift store GV jeans!

I love everything about fall! Even the colors though I like to throw light pink in there (as you know). I’m so glad to be able to layer again. I never wear yellow (I was told it wasn’t good for my coloring in my color analysis) but your sweater is really pretty and the color works for you. Maybe I should re-examine that. I’m loving these pictures. Just to see everyone out and about and to see your neck of the woods is fun for me sitting here at my Michigan farm on a gray day. Keep them coming!

I’m so glad to be COMFORTABLE in layering again! I wear light layers to work all summer because it’s like the arctic in my office, then when I walk outside for lunch it’s BRUTAL in a cardigan. Now I can go in AND out in layers and am okay.
I’m not much for a cool lemony yellow, but I do really like this warm golden yellow.
I’m sure your Michigan farm is very peaceful 🙂 I’m still waiting for a farm tour!

I love this bold color on you. In a way it speaks volumes about who you are, Bettye. I mean, look at how you are so transformed by the sun and light, and how your photos show the world a whole different place. That’s you. And how you are bold.
And I have to tell you that my yellow cardigan is my most worn piece. For some reason, it just add that umphhh to everything!!
XOXO

You always have such a nice way of saying things, Jodi! I *am* very…I can’t think of the right word here, but
air and light are SO important to me. My last apartment had little of either and it really depressed me. The
area where I live now is hilly with a lot of winding roads. In the afternoon when the sun starts to lower, and
it comes through the trees in that golden filtered way, it brings me such joy. There’s another street, when I’m
just leaving my house, because I live at the top of a hill, when I’m heading down towards town, I go around a
curve and when I get the first sight of the harbor and the boats through the trees (cuz I’m high up), WOW. I
love that moment. LOVE.

Loving that sweater, Bettye. I too have been looking for a cardi that color. I am picky with yellow though, and love an all cotton sweater, so I will continue to look.
Right now, I am investing in burgundy, olive and cinnamon. I love all shades of brown, and they go with burgundy and olive, so brown is my mantra. I have some brown from years past, but they are coming out with fabulous new browns now, so I am like a kid in a candy shop. I also love browns with turquoise, and have just taken my turquoise kimono to be repaired. The seam split the first time I wore it, and not because it’s too small. The material is so light, it just went. That’s okay though, seamstress is on it. Also took a pair of jeans for alterations (my white ones), as I adore them, but they kept falling off. Was validated when seamstress told me she would do the alterations the exact same way I would have, but let her do it because legs need to be taken in too. All in all, cheaper than buying new, and now they will fit properly.
I need a sewing machine. And some cognac colored booties.
Have a great week!

I know, the browns now are SO SO GOOD! I ALSO love brown with turquoise! Oh no, turquoise kimono! Yay seamstress! Cognac colored booties also on my wish list for fall.
I HAVE a sewing machine. It hates me.
Nancy
Autumn has great colours. How did your appointment go?

ALL CLEAR! I go back for another scan in 6 months. Thanks for asking {{hugs}}.

WOO HOO!!!
Pauline starsmore
Love the gold colour, I have a cardigan and a hoodie in that colour.

It just sort of brightens my mood when I wear it!
Thanks for stopping by, Pauline!
Jennie
Such a lovely cardigan for fall! Shades of yellow are so happy and fun to wear. Don’t you just hate having to retire perfectly broken in jeans? Looks like a really nice afternoon at the park.
Fashion Schlub
Thanks, Jennie! Oh, I’m SO sad at the prospect of losing these jeans! I remember when I got them I almost sent them back “they’re not trendy enough” (me, the big trend-setter), they’re just Regular Jeans. But the fit has been so good that they’ve been very wearable and I’m just gonna set my OWN trend of REGULAR JEANS, ha ha. Maybe Jodie’s Mom has a trick for me to salvage them before they’re unwearable!

Love your golden topper! It’s a gorgeous shade. I’m working in greens and raspberry/wine for a fall feel. It’s still too hot hear for layers…
Fashion Schlub
It’s been warm here, too…I can only manage a very thin cardigan over a sleeveless top like this. I was just looking through some fluffier sweaters in the back of my closet and was like NOT YET.
Thanks for stopping by!
