Happy Accidents
Don’t you just love a happy accident?? You know, like “hey, you got peanut butter on my chocolate!” or when Bob Ross accidentally dabbed a little black paint onto an otherwise green forest bed and turned it into a stream – “we don’t make mistakes – we have happy accidents.”
Or in this case, when I wanted to team my camel cardigan with a wine trapeze dress but actually thought it looked a little meh…then while looking through a drawer for some hand cream, I came across this scarf my daughter gave me for Christmas a few years ago and BAM realized it would tie the two solid colors of wine and camel together and make a nice outfit. A happy accident.
Interesting when you think how many significant things in our lives are really the cause of “accidents,” or “events unplanned.” My ex and I (before we were even engaged or officially living together) bought our first house together not based on a plan, but because my (then) best friend’s sister had just gotten her real estate license and was eager to make a sale, so she begged to show us a house because it had a 4-stall barn in the back. We were certainly not in the market for a house and I didn’t even have a horse right then, but she associated the property with me because of that. Well, the house was mad cheap and I fell in love with the charm (even though I think I’m the only one who saw that – my mother literally CRIED the first time she saw it cuz it was so run down and filthy) and we bought it. And THEN because I was buying a house with a barn, my boss offered me the horse love-of-my-life, Robbie Stop, because he couldn’t stay sound enough to do the high level show jumping he was capable of doing, plus, he was a little high maintenance and could be tough to handle. So because someone’s sister had a new job, I ended up with a house and a horse 🙂
Think of the people in your life and how you met – waiting for an elevator, on the dance floor at an out-of-state wedding, making them coffee every day at the local coffee shop or maybe you literally “bumped into them” in a minor fender-bender. Or maybe a job you ended up getting because of a casual conversation with a stranger in line at the market. The point is, you never know who or what is right around the next corner, good or bad. And how interesting it is that some of the biggest things in our lives – partners, relationships, jobs, homes – can materialize seemingly out of thin air just based on a coincidence or chance encounter.
We never know what a new day will bring. What might today bring?? Maybe a Happy Accident.

I love looking at life this way….it’s the Pollyanna in me, I know!
But your outfit example is the perfect reason for scarves!!
And your house and horse…what a great story. So many times things happen for a reason, but we can’t see that until afterwards!!
XOXO

I was THIS CLOSE to explaining how it can go the OTHER way, too, but thought…people know that. I don’t need to point that out. That’s the anti-Pollyana in me 🙂

Thank you, Nancy! My memory is so bad these days, I just wrote that post last night and I’m already thinking “what story??” Ha.

Love a happy accident! And I also love this cardigan as it is also in my closet. I have not combined with wine though…and this just gave me some inspiration.

Fabulous post! First, you are right, the scarf just completed your look! I love it! Second, I love the thought of happy accidents. Most of my life up until a few years ago, I woke early almost every morning excited for the day, thinking anything could happen and it could be good! I don’t know what happened but I kind of lost that spunk but you have inspired me to maybe fake til I make it? Ha ha. You made my day and gave me a new goal!
Peace!
