Setting Wardrobe Intentions
Usually around this time of year I’m going through my closet with a fine-toothed comb, deciding what stays and what goes…and what additional specific items are needed to round out my wardrobe.
I’m going to do things a little differently this year as:
- the specific list thing never works that well for me: being at the high end of mainstream plus sizes (very few companies go above size 24), my options are always very limited
- it’s easy for me to get locked into “I need this in white, grey and black” without being open to the virtual rainbow of actual possibilities. and because I shop mainly online and search for “white, grey and black” things I don’t usually even SEE the other options
So I’ve decided to make a list (yes, another list) of wardrobe intentions for this year. Overarching changes I’d like to see in my outfits and appearance. And then I can search for things of a certain vibe vs. just color or shape. I thought it seemed like a fun way to change things up a bit, maybe you’d like to try it, too!
- Polish Things Up
- I used to “dress” a little more. My weight and my painful feet have dragged me down a bit (#understatement). Once I start with comfortable shoes (meaning, running style sneakers), it’s hard to elevate much from there. But I admit I’ve gotten lazy about searching for nicer-looking comfortable shoes. Maybe there are brands and styles out there now that weren’t available two years ago.
-
- More pants that aren’t jeans. Again, this is probably just laziness on my part. I found a brand and style that fits me and I just order them over and over and over again in different colors. Easy-peasy. But with my “not sneakers,” it would be nice to have some “not jeans.”
-
- More tunics and blouses than tees. Again, that seems like an easy enough change, that will elevate many of my looks right away.
-
- Up my jewelry and accessories game. Up it? Ha. CREATE IT. My jewelry “collection” has dwindled to practically nothing over the years as I’ve sold things off. I should have added “sell gold and silver jewelry” to my “ways to make money quick” post. I inherited so many things from my mother that were never really my style, I just kept them because they were hers…and at times over the years when I really needed money, they were an easy thing to sell for instant cash. I have a guy. Ha ha. No, really 🙂 And beyond jewelry, I shouldn’t be carrying the same bag for years and years. They end up looking worn and bring down the entire outfit.
- Wear More Color & Print
- I’ve been pretty firmly locked into the whole minimal look thing for awhile. Simple lines, few colors, subdued tones. I still like that look, I think that’s My Look…but I could stand to expand on it a bit.
- I am tired of just wearing sold color on solid color. I realize that’s part of cold weather dressing, but now is the perfect time to start breaking out of that a bit. I will prioritize florals and plaids and stripes and geometrics, etc., over solids.
- Step Outside the Box
- Back to that minimal/tailored/casual look of mine, I think it’s time to step outside that box a bit and think a little more creative and artfully and…remember my resolution for this year (that went out the window a few days later when I found out I had to move right away!), “romantically.”
-
- I’d like to be a little more adventurous in my dressing. Nothing crazy (although “crazy” is relative!), but a little. I think I can manage a little.
I think that’s enough! While only three main points, when it comes to change, three things is maybe a lot. And if I could find 1-2 new things this year that meet each of the three main things, I will consider this a success!
Do you have any changes you wish you could make in your wardrobe? I’d love to hear about them. And if you have successes, I’d love to see pictures! I’ve been thinking about a new Facebook group – something more interactive than the FashionSchlub Facebook page, where people can really share – questions, comments, pictures, links, etc. But I don’t know if that’s just One More Place for people to go when lives are already spread so thin.
Have a nice weekend, everyone!

Love these ideas. My wardrobe is predictable too – Gwynnie Bee helps a
little with that but I admit I often only try on and then return. I’m thinking of cancelling. One intention I’ve made for myself – and it’s a tough one because #busy – is to try to shop in actual stores more versus online. For exactly the reason you said – online you can easily find exactly what you think you want and miss out on new trends and looks that you might not even know you like! Every time I go to the mall (the mall!) I’m inspired. So that’s one of my goals. I’m also trying to minimize fast fashion in my wardrobe so this is an additional layer of challenge.
bettyewp
I tried to minimize fast fashion, too, but it’s EXPENSIVE, ha! I understand what you’re PAYING for, but…that doesn’t give me extra money to spend. And they’re all like, “oh, well-made sustainable clothing will LAST longer, so your clothing budget goes further,” but a) my CHEAP clothing lasts me a pretty long time! and b) most things I ruin by spilling food on my myself and I’m just as likely to do that with a $300 linen tank top as a $15 one. And then it’s ruined. No matter HOW well made it was! So it’s a line I straddle. I TRY to stay on the responsible side, but…I mostly fail.
Sarah
Yes definitely easier said than done – especially when Target has such cute stuff! I just want to minimize as I’m trying to be more fiscally responsible (it’s a challenge for me!)
Nancy
haha, good intentions! Have a great weekend dear Bettye!

Thanks, you too!

I’m so excited for you to start being more adventurous Bettye. Not that everyone has to, but I feel like it’s been more fun for me, so why shouldn’t it be for everyone?
As for the shoes, have you tried Walking Cradles? I learned about them from Cathy at My Side of 50 because she needs wide shoes, and they have such a variety of sizes.
I’ve been working with them for a year now, and while they aren’t cheap, they do have sales which helps. I have a discount code for a short time this spring. I’ll have to go check and see what it is.
My goal is I think I need to separate my summer/winter wardrobe. I’ve never wanted to do that but it’s getting out of control….eeeek!!
XOXO

My code for Walking Cradles is Style15 for 15% off. She hasn’t told me when it expires, but last time it was good for only a month. But check them out. Or talk to Cathy too

Don’t get too excited. My steps into more adventurousness will be BABY STEPS 🙂
I’ve never tried Walking Cradles. Are they in stores or only online? I have *such* difficult feet to fit: wide, left heel spur and right plantar fasciitis and very high insteps. I try on dozens of shoes at the store in hopes of finding ONE that will not increase my discomfort…and then, do I LIKE it? Can I afford it? It’s painful to think of doing that online. I’ll take a look though!
I love my seasonally separated wardrobe! It’s nice to put certain things AWAY every year, out of sight…and then be happy to see them again the following year. Now I’m thinking of even doing some separating of fall and winter. I wear so much “autumn-toned” clothing in the fall, that by the time the new year rolls around I’m sort of ready for a change…more pastels maybe, but still knits and turtlenecks. I have way more items in my cold weather arsenal, I could probably get away with that and not feel a pinch. I couldn’t do that with spring/summer, even though those are sort of different clothes, too. You Can Do It! And blog the experience!
Judi
I can say exactly the same things, Bettye. Though I will say that a couple of years ago I bought a bunch (a big bunch) of simple cardigans in a rainbow of colors. Like you, I favor black and gray (less white at the moment) and those sweaters did wonders. (BTW, the red sweater you featured this week was a fabulous color on you!)
I would love to know if there is a plus size wardrobe swap anywhere in the tri-state region. I have so many things, many of them worn once or twice, and even brand-spankin’ new), plus shoes galore that have never been worn. No, I’m not a spend-thrift, but when you get them on super sale for $4 and they are great quality and fit, why not? Another way to save money AND beef up our wardrobes.
bettyewp
Hey Judi, have you heard of the Big Fat Flea? It’s a plus size swap/sale held every couple years in Manhattan. Their last one was fall 2017 so MAYBE there’ll be one this year…I’ll look into it. https://www.facebook.com/BigFatFlea/

The shoes that I’ve found that are the most comfortable for me with my hard-to- fit feet are SAS shoes. They come in WWW widths. They are fairly expensive but they last forever. High quality shoes. Have you tried this shoe?
Maybe you can find a store that sells SAS shoes and see what you think. Not very many stores carry them though.
They also have a phone number you can call if you’re having trouble finding a shoe that fits.
bettyewp
I think I’ve heard of SAS but I’ve never seen them anywhere in person or tried them. I’ll keep my eyes open for them. Thanks for the suggestion!
Karen
Orthofeet shoes looks like a good shoe to try too! 🙂 Suspect you’ve already checked them out though~I sympathize with you on finding comfortable, attractive shoes!

Adventure is good my friend, even if it’s adventurous baby steps! I think adding a few colorful and/or print pieces is a good place to start. I love the floral ON pants! I know you’re trying to get away from sneakers a bit, but my Adidas Superstars are my hands down favorite as far as comfort & style. They are super cushioned & supportive & look great with everything…pants, skirts, jeans…

I hear you on the shoes issue – I MISS wearing cute shoes! Just wanted to throw my two cents in and mention a blogger who reviews all kinds of shoes for comfort —

Wow, hard to fit feet – seems to be a theme with the comments. I’ll add to it, though my problem is very narrow feet. Especially heels. Eons ago back in the dark ages, one could buy shoes with a “combination last”. I haven’t found anything like that in years. Consequently, I almost never have shoes that fit and are comfortable. There should be a way!!!
Love your ideas. My first choice would be to throw out everything in my wardrobe and start from scratch. But, we know that’s not gonna happen, so my plan is a couple of bright (I love bright clothes) ‘over shirts’. I’m sure there’s a better word, but I can’t come up with it at the moment.

What’s a “combination last”? I’ve never even heard that term.
Ahh, wouldn’t it magical if everything just disappeared…and someone handed you cash to start all over?? That’s the dream. The dream of renter’s insurance, ha ha.
Iris
Combination last is where the toe area of shoe and the heel area are different widths. For instance, I used to wear a 3A in toe and a 5A in the heel.
As I’ve gotten older my feet have widened a bit. I think I could get by with an A/3A now, but that is nowhere to be found. There are some shoes made in a “N” (though rare) and they are still way too wide in the heel.
My best bet is something that fastens so I can actually keep it on. Even then they rarely fit. I did find a pair of Cobb Hill low heels last year – of course they had a sling back and buckled so they looked like they fit and stayed on my feet. Oh for the combination last to return. 🙂

Oh, I have CERTAINLY never heard of anything like that! I hope you find something. Have you looked on ebay??
