The One Where I Didn’t Go Straight Home
The theme of the summer has been GO STRAIGHT HOME AND STAY THERE. No sunsets, no cocktail beach, no dinners with friends, no photo shoots. If it involves being out of the air conditioning or driving after dark I have been NOT INTERESTED.
But tonight she went out. And it was good. Even when her thighs were trembly driving on the dark winding roads on the last leg of the drive home.
Last year on this day I went to a really fun art event in Brooklyn. So fun. Interesting installations, interactive activities, fun things. Went to the same thing tonight. So not good, ha ha. Very disappointing. BUT we got an AWESOME parking spot. And in New York that right there can be worth the price of admission. And I ALSO had a GREAT dinner. I NEVER don’t have a complaint about something. I Had No Complaint About My Meal. Bolivian food. Never had it before. FAN. TASTIC. AND (not least) I got to catch up with my friend who I’ve barely spent any time with this summer cuz heat and driving at night. So the good definitely outweighed the bad.
Look at me, all positive and sh*t!
I wore this lovely top from Sanctuary via Gwynnie Bee. I think I’m doing well with my “romantic dressing” resolution. It’s nice to be a step or two above “tee shirt and jeans.”
It was nice being out. It was nice being out in Brooklyn. Brooklyn -> Always Good. It’s just so alive…it makes ME feel more alive. And these days, that’s a good thing. Do you have a place or activity that revives you…or lifts you out of a slump?
Hope you have good things over the weekend to look forward to!
What I Wore:
- Sanctuary Countryside Flutter Sleeve Top, 3x. Also in straight and petite sizes here.
- Charlotte Russe Refuge skinny jeans, size 22 short. Comparable here.

Funny because I was just talking about being adventurous about food on Instagram. But I haven’t tried Bolivian food…probably because I haven’t ever seen any around here. That’s the advantage of NYC…it’s such a wonderful melting pot.
So glad you got out and was a Pollyanna!!!

I wouldn’t go so far as to say I was a POLLYANNA (ahh, THIS is more the normal me)!

That first paragraph is so me — nothing after dark, air conditioning is a must, nothing that involves far away parking and a bunch of walking and definitely no night time driving. Rotfl at my ‘safe shell’ existence. I am s-l-o-w-l-y pulling out of this mindset and this encourages me. I love reading your blog.

Oh yeah, “far parking” is the bane of my existence. I always tell my friends (who are more apt to take the first spot they see), “the more I have to walk from parking to The Thing, the less I can walk AT The Thing.” I can go just so far before my hips go, a pain under my right rib cage starts, my feet ache, etc. I don’t mind circling the block a couple times in search of The Close Spot.

I love the outfit and agree that the weather (and night driving) keeping me inside this time of year. I do not enjoy this hot/sweaty weather unless I am close to water! I may be brave, like you, and step out of my box and try something fun this weekend! Love your outfit too!!! Thank you for the inspiration!!!
bettyewp
Yes! Try something fun! I will too!

Great post! So happy you had a fun and reviving night out. That’s great! We have a night out planned this weekend – we will be kid-free and will visit an amazing Peruvian restaurant we love in a fun little Delaware River town called Lambertville. I am really looking forward to it. Things have been kinda tough this hot summer and energy has been low. These little special things are a needed pick-me-up. Glad you had a nice one. Love the look you’re showing as well – definitely a cute step up from jeans/tee.
bettyewp
What’s your favorite thing from the Peruvian restaurant?
Sarah
They make amazing ceviches – all are good. And then this soup: PARIHUELA – Repairing and aphrodisiacal soup from the sea. Made of shrimp, mussels, octopus and corvina fish cooked with Rocoto peppers & Peruvian beer. (From their website, not my wordsππ)

OOh, I would like a repairing soup. I’m going to have to look up some Bolivian recipes and try some out. Though many things seem reliant on Bolivian beer and I’m not sure where to get THAT.

I’m glad you got out, spent time with a friend and enjoyed yourself! The top is adorable and definitely a step up from a basic tee. xo

Yeah, it was good to get out! It’s been such a weird summer in that regard.

Oh! The romantic look. I took a quiz nearly 30years ago that had me pegged as a cross between “sporty natural” and “romantic”. I love the romantic style clothes, but prefer to keep things natural. Little makeup, natural fibers vs synthetics. I’ve been drooling over the 50s fashions that include the swing skirt. Haven’t found ready made that’s affordable and knowing the cost of the fabrics and the possible yardage needed is driving me bonkers. Some of my favorites in the past have been calf length cotton skirts. And I wore them out before I married Rich.
I love that blouse!!! V neck and sweetheart necklines work best on me.
I’m not familiar with Bolivian cuisine. What did you eat?
bettyewp
I think that quiz would have summed me up pretty much the same. I mostly (at this time) go-between “romantic boho” and “sporty casual.” They seem so different yet…
I also prefer natural fibers but that sometimes down to a cost and availability issue. I’m trying to build more of a linen and cotton summer wardrobe but it’s slow going!
At Bolivian LLama Party I had a “chicha verde” sandwich: grilled chicken thighs, marinated in Bolivian beer and quilquina, with cilantro aioli, chicken cracklins, bacon, tomatoes and butter lettuce; truffle “papitas” (french fries) with garlic, huacatay (black mint?) and truffle aioli; and to drink, some kind og mango and passion fruit juice that was light and lovely. It was all extremely tasty – the fries were to die for.

So glad you were able to get out. I just don’t at night – and sometimes not even in the daytime. I just can’t drive at night anymore. It’s a pain, but it is what it is. Glad you have fun!

I definitely had that drive back home in my mind most of the evening…but I took an out-of-the-way route home that’s a little better lit and that helped some. But I’m still so relieved when I pull into my driveway and I know that part is done.
