Fashion Schlub’s 2nd Annual Anti-Black Friday Extravaganza
Welll…maybe extravaganza is a slight exaggeration. I know there are a gazillion sales on Black Friday…and that people like to get a jump start on their holiday shopping on the extra day off from work. And I don’t want to be judgey about the folks that run out to the mall after Thanksgiving dinner or stake their place in line at midnight for a store’s 6am opening Friday morning. But. Is buying the newest cheapest latest greatest really worth that?
I like to save the day after Thanksgiving as a mental health day. It’s really a freebie. Friday’s not really a holiday, but so many people were calling in sick to work the day after Thanksgiving to make it a real 4-day weekend that employers eventually just threw up their hands and said oh alright. Well, a lot of employers, not all. SOMEBODY’S got to work at the stores where the masses are shopping. And if people are out and about, then we need law enforcement and public safety and hospitals and…well, you see where I’m going. The shoppers are the pebble in the water that starts the ripple effect that goes on and on.
But maybe instead of causing ripples, we could just…lay low and let the water, and our minds, be still. Spend quality time with your guests, hosts, friends or family. Spend quality time with yourself. Read a book. Take a nap. Binge-watch Christmas movies on Netflix. Make a list of acts of service you’ll gift instead of presents you would buy. Bake cookies. Write holiday cards. Rake leaves in the fresh air. Volunteer. Go for a drive. Sit on the front porch or comfy sofa and watch the world go by through the window. Call a friend you’ve been neglecting. Draw. Pick up that guitar and learn a new song.
I hope tomorrow you’re able to take a little time for you – to think, and reflect and consider what you’re thankful for.
Happy Thanksgiving.

And can we talk a moment about what I’m wearing? Last year I wore a leopard scarf with this dress and loved it. SO. This year I went bigger and better! What do you think of the floral/leopard combo? I happen to love it and want to wear it every minute of every day for the rest of my life.
And the boots…while they look nice…and are that rarity of rarities: Boots That Fit My Larger Than Life Calves…they’re just not a good fit in the foot. The foot part is way big on me. I was so excited that THEY ACTUALLY FIT MY CALVES that I was like I’M SOLD and didn’t walk around enough in them to discover that they were too big in the foot. They actually feel flopsy on my feet as I walk. And I bought them back in August, so no returning them now 🙁 I don’t THINK. I’ll check, but I’m doubtful. Though I got something the other day and the receipt said returns accepted for 365 days! If I can’t return them I’ll Poshmark them. Lesson Learned.
What I’m Wearing
- Ellos Madison A-Line Dress in black floral, size 2x.
- Sanctuary Leopard Cardigan, size 2x. Here in plus, here in straight.
- Eloquii Rico Boot. No longer available in cognac, but they still have it in black.
- Gorjana G-Ring Hoop Drop Earrings in gold

Lots of businesses here are advertising black Friday sales and we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving! I don’t know why it’s called black Friday, we call any Friday that is the thirteenth of a month black Friday. I think it’s consumerism gone mad !
You look stunning in your dress and leopard cardigan. I am getting some great ideas for outfits, thank you Get the.

According to Google, “The term “Black Friday” was first used on Sept. 24, 1869, when two investors, Jay Gould and Jim Fisk, drove up the price of gold and caused a crash that day. The stock market dropped 20% and foreign trade stopped. Farmers suffered a 50% dip in wheat and corn harvest value.” Sometime later, retailers tried to get the name changed to “Big Friday,” but people just kept calling it Black Friday.
Consumerism HAS gone mad! I’m happy to see a lot of influencers talk about this and how to “use” Black Friday in a more responsible way vs jamming into stores and buying up everything on sale. I have my eye on one bag that I’ve been waiting to go on sale…and it has…so that’s the extent of my Thanksgiving shopping. But it’s online. I would never in a million years go INTO stores tomorrow.
Happy Thursday!

Black Friday has crossed ‘the pond’ and the UK is wrapped up in this frantic shopping extravaganza as well. We also get the ‘Boxing Day’ sales (December 26th) when it starts all over again. Far too exhausting!
You outfit looks amazing, couldn’t an insole help with the boots? Are you loosing weight, you look great, and your longer hair looks so pretty.
Have a great Thanksgiving.
bettyewp
Ugh, I’m sorry our shopping sickness has found its way to you, too!
Yeah, I’ve lost a little weight. The hair is at a point where it needs a little shaping or something.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Wear thick socks or two pair with the boots.
bettyewp
Good suggestion! Happy Thanksgiving!
Susan
Or put some insoles inside the boots. You look fabulous.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks, Susan! Happy Thanksgiving to you as well!
Nancy
Wow what a beautiful outfit! Such a shave that the boots don’t fit, can’t you fill them up or something. The dress and cardigan are fabulous and those colors look so pretty on you!
bettyewp
Thanks, Nancy. I wore them with in-soles and also the legs kept slipping down on me. You couldn’t see this in the photos cuz I would tug them back up before every picture. Someone suggested wearing thicker socks – but I am NOT a sock girl. I just don’t wear them. I have one pair of black silk “invisible” socks that I wear maybe twice a year. I don’t like them – I hate trying to put them on, I hate the way they feel, they’re always slipping down or around, I hate the feel of toe seams…you get the picture. I am not a fan! So there’s not really a good solution here. And it’s too bad cuz they ARE pretty, and such a beautiful color…and go with so many autumny things in my closet. But. Better to let someone else have them who WILL get use out of them.

Oh. My. Gosh! This might be my all-time favorite Bettye look! I love this so much! The floral and leopard are perfect together!
I recently bought two leopard dresses at a resale shop—-one is snow leopard cashmere ($12!) and one is much like your sweater and is modal yumminess (oddly, $16, which compared to the price of the cashmere confuses me…)
Anyway, I like your sentiment today, and I love your look! 😃🐆👍🏾

Damn girl! This may be my all time favorite outfit…you look absolutely gorgeous my friend! And as far as your words go…YES. There is literally nothing…NOTHING…that would lure me out of my house on Black Friday. That’s the day we put up our Christmas tree and just chill. Now, it’s no secret that I love shopping as much as the next girl, but Black Friday is freakin’ off the rails. And at the risk of sounding judgmental, Thursday is Thanksgiving. That should mean family, food and feeling like death on the couch afterwards because you’ve eaten a weeks worth of food in one sitting. I think it’s gross that retailers started that whole Thanksgiving nonsense, but the sad reality is that consumers bought into it. Enough of that though…I hope that you have a fabulous Thanksgiving and enjoy your peaceful Friday off work. xo

I love this look on you – you look just gorgeous and that hairstyle is perfect for your face! The leopard cardigan is such an understated print that it works just great with the dark floral dress. And I’m so sorry to hear about the boots because they look wonderful on you! Could you find some inserts to take up the extra foot space so you can keep them? As far as Black Friday, I pretty much stay away from the stores and I’m going to follow your very helpful list of what to do instead. Except the guitar…. maybe I’ll practice my harmonica that I stopped trying to learn twelve years ago because it drove my cat crazy…. Happy Thanksgiving to you!

I just love the print mixing Bettye, and I was so excited to see those boots on you….bummer that they are so big in the foot.
We used to always relax on Black Friday…and start our Holiday cards and decorate. This year we are going to Glendale Glitters to enjoy some holiday festivities!! (and for the holiday blog edition.)
XOXO

Ooh, Glendale Glitters sounds fun! I look forward to seeing it soon.

Bettye, I am so totally with you on the Black Friday business. We spent Friday having a Friendsgiving feast with some of our oldest and dearest friends whom we haven’t seen in forever. That is after our giant Thanksgiving feast on Thursday at my sister’s. Hello holiday poundage! Now your outfit, my friend…it is absolutely brilliant! I love leopard with pretty much any print and the floral combination is perfection! I am loving the tall boots, too. It is a shame the foot is too big. Have you tried Simply Be? I had the opportunity to collaborate with them a few years ago specifically for their wide calf boots. The cool thing with them is that you customize your size. You specify your calf width and your foot width to get the perfect fit. And the prices are completely reasonable. Wishing you a very happy holiday season!

Shelbee, your Black Friday Friendsgiving feats sounds wonderful. THAT’S the way to spend a holiday.
I bought SO MANY boots last year (and returned them all), I can’t even remember if Simply Be was in that mix, but I will take a look. Customization sounds like just what I need – thanks for the heads up!
Happy Thanksgiving!
