Feeling Foxy
Seriously. What did you think you were going to see here??
Wearing a dress with a novelty fox print is about as foxy as I get!
Wearing novelty prints can be A Lot of Fun, especially around the holidays. You can really express your personality! And if you’re wearing a doughnut-print dress on the weekend or out in the evening, have at it! Wear some sprinkle sandals and a Box of Joe bag (is that a thing? that should totally be a thing), etc. But if you want to wear a fun print to work, there are ways to make it more office-appropriate.
Let the wacky print be the only “wacky” in your look. Wear a solid cardigan or blazer over top, solid color tights, a classic bag. You want to be styling a print in a modern way…not looking like a caricature.
Conversely, wear a novelty bag or shoes or tights with a more laid-back, solid-colored look.
Or, you can choose a fun theme print in a more toned-down color palette.
I rented this dress from Nuuly, a new (to me) clothing rental service. When I gave up Gwynnie Bee back in the summer, I thought I would be a) saving money and b) using some of that saving to invest in new pieces of clothing. What has actually happened is that I’m buying more things than ever, I think because I’m missing those 4-5 different items I’d have every month from GB. So I gave this service a try because it has a lot of things from Anthropologie, and if you hadn’t noticed, I’m OBSESSED with all things Anthropologie. But they’re special (and expensive!) items. I like having a meat and potatoes (aka neutral basics) wardrobe with just a sprinkling of garnish (Anthro stuff!).
The monthly rental is $88, but for that you get six items to keep and wear for the entire month. So you can create outfits from their inventory and have the time to wear items in different ways. I know that’s a lot, but I thought I’d just give it a try. There’s no contract, you can cancel at any time. The other thing that’s better than Gwynnie Bee is that you select the exact items you want sent to you. With GB you put your favorite items in your closet, and they picked what to send you each time. Nuuly is great if you have an event or holiday or vacation coming up, and want some special options.
SO, this cute lil fox dress. I love it! And I thought my chestnut cardigan would be great with it (as it is great with like everything). And new chestnut flats also go with practically everything I’m wearing this time of year. But I’m rapidly running out of bare legs weather and I’m really scrambling to find tights and ankle boots.
If you also love the novelty print trend, there are some retailers that do them really well:
Here are some fun dresses that I really love!
Do you ever wear novelty prints?

I love novelty prints in moderation. I am fascinated with this shirt https://www.betabrand.com/womens/tops/longsleeve-button-down-ruth-bader-ginsberg-leopard but I’m afraid to pull the trigger. Maybe a Christmas gift to myself.

Hahaha! How fabulous! That would be the main attraction in any room. Overall, it’s a lovely leopard print. Up close, it’s RBG!!!

Gah, that’s HYSTERICAL!!! You MUST have that shirt!!!

I LOVE that dress on you – great colors, and the fox print is really fun. Maeve is great for fun prints. My favorite was this vintage phone print they did several years ago: https://poshmark.com/listing/Anthropologie-Maeve-Sleeveless-Telephone-Print-Top-5d2276df1153ba9b1bdf8b14
I don’t really have any novelty print clothes – I like them, though. I love novelty prints on socks, and have tons of those.

Ohmygosh that phone print is DARLING!!!

Do you know I don’t have any novelty prints like this, really? But I’m hoping to change that.
We met up with a friend in NYC when we were out there and he and his wife use a rental service for their clothing. My other friend (who lives here in AZ) just couldn’t fathom it. But I get it for some situations. Especially when I used RTR for dress up dresses.
This is a wonderful outfit Bettye,

NO NOVELTY PRINTS? YOU?? GASP!!!

Oh I LOVE novelty prints. I have a couple but would like more So glad to see some sources! I used to have Gwnnie Bee (loved) but I didn’t know about Nuuly!! Thanks!
Oh and I know I’m slow, but enjoyed your recent post about accepting yourself yet being a work in progress. I’m a lifelong (age 59) fat girl, so I’m glad for the fat acceptance movement. BUT, I have quit seeking out much because there seem like an overwhelming number of angry, militant voices. And I’ll never believe that helps ANYBODY.
That Flannery O’Conner quote, which I’d never heard, summed it up perfectly.
How are you getting along with “Anna Karenina?” Did you get to see the most recent movie? (2012). I think it got awards for costuming, but I thought it deserved awards for everything. So beautiful.

“I have quit seeking out much because there seem like an overwhelming number of angry, militant voices.” I try to steer clear of that faction as well. I know they mean well, and staying SILENT never changes anything, but…I prefer to address things in a more civilized manner. Besides, you catch more flies with honey (though, who wants to catch flies??).
Oh, Anna, Anna Karenina! I’m currently in an alright portion. It’s not bad when it’s focused on the relationships. It’s when they start talking about Russia and their politics and farming, etc, that I lose interest. And it’s LOONNGG. And I feel like A LOT of it is extraneous (she said, criticizing what has been called The Greatest Novel of All Time). I have NOT seen the movie…and wouldn’t want to before finishing the book cuz once I know what happens I’ll NEVER go back to slogging through it, hour after hour, day after day, week after week. I need to experience TGNOAT personally. Ha. I can’t IMAGINE telling this story in under 2 hours in a movie!

That is a wonderful dress! I have nothing with fun prints but I keep seeing these skater skirts with Paris or London or yellow duckies or holiday themes all around the bottom half of the skirt and I’m so attracted to them. I’m kind of thinking that Nuuly sounds like fun. I’ve never rented clothing before (other than going with my husband to rent a tux for him) but $88 for a month doesn’t sound too bad for 6 good-quality brand name pieces. What if you fall in love with one of the pieces and want to keep it? I think that cardigan and those shoes paired perfectly with that dress, but I also think black knee-high boots would be perfect. You definitely need to find some boots….

If you like the item you can buy it at a discounted price (cuz remember it’s been worn by others and is no longer new).
I do have black knee-high boots but they’re at the point that they slip down constantly and are really annoying for “real life” (as opposed to a photo shoot). I’m hunting for a pair of cognac ankle boots that will look good with both jeans and dresses. And I have a million things I like/don’t like and I have fit issues with my large calves, even just with ankle boots. So it’s a long, slow search, that I think started TWO YEARS AGO. I have bought and returned MANY, MANY pairs. I have one more on their way to me right now. Buy Return Buy Return. I’m gonna have that on my headstone 🙂

Ok, so I am curious what makes your decision whether to keep a clothing item or not from these companies? What is your criteria? I actually love this dress on you and would think you should keep it! But you didn’t state whether you did or not. I don’t have the money to spend on these companies, so I live vicariously through you. Do tell!!!

I still have the fox dress here and will get another wear out of it before I send it back. But it will go back. MOSTLY I keep more “invisible” pieces – like the black swing dress and the dark wash straight-leg jeans and a black crew-neck sweater, cuz you can wear them over and over and over as part of so many different outfits, and no one really notices. You get a lot of bank for your buck…or as the “responsible fashionistas” say, “you get the lowest cost per wear.” That’s why I love the rental services cuz you can have some “extra” things, special things, fancy things – things you would really only wear rarely cuz everyone would notice if you wore a fox dress three times in one week. There are exceptions of course. Sometimes I just love a thing SO MUCH I cannot bear to part with it…but I find that more so with summer clothes. I think I can be a little “frilly fancier” in the summer without feeling like it’s too much.
I have more rentals to show in the next couple weeks. I’m wondering if there’s a way to set this service to only be every other month, cuz 6 things for a month is really a lot!
Iris
Cute dress. I’ve never tried a rental service, but might think about it. I’ve far exceeded my clothes budget this last month & that might help.

Yeah, I was really trying to rein myself in, but, like dieting, as soon as I said CUT BACK all I wanted to do was BUY STUFF! I’m still working on finding a balance. I have some ideas for 2020 I’ll share soon.
Iris
I can definitely use ideas. If I’d just quit looking at what’s out there I’d be better off.

I adore novelty prints and wear them more often than my Instagram or blog would suggest. They’re fun and make me appear so much more approachable than my RBF would lead one to believe.
Now I’m in search of a fox print dress because I big puffy heart the one you’re wearing.
bettyewp
Oh I see lots of fox things! Modcloth, CowCow, Amazon!
Ha, yes, I should think about counterbalancing my “not smiling” face more as well. I don’t know that mine is RB, but it’s definitely, Old Sad Worried.
