Match Made in Seven: ARE THERE Fashion Essentials Every Women Should Own??
Welcome to the monthly edition of Match Made in Seven! We are an international group of fashion bloggers who meet virtually once a month. One of us chooses a theme each month, and that can be anything: a book, music, a color, a movie. And then we all style an outfit based on that theme.
This month’s theme was chosen by Darlene of Aquamarina Style and is “Seven Fashion Essentials Every Women Should Own.” See my post about the theme below…and be sure to take a look at my fellow bloggers to see how they have interpreted the theme this month.

The theme for this month is, “Seven Fashion Essentials Every Women Should Own.” I did a similar post here and basically my stance on “items that every woman should own” or “things that should be in every wardrobe” is this: Everyone is Different. Everyone’s situation is different. Everyone’s clothing needs are different. I don’t believe there are seven things every woman should own.
I do, however, believe there are some clothing goals women should strive for when purchasing clothing items:
1. Clothes that make you feel confident. Does this item/outfit fit you well? Is it appropriate to your situation? Can you move around and sit comfortably?
2. Clothes that fit you well. Is the item too snug or too loose so you’re having to keep adjusting it? Is it comfortable to move around and sit down in? Do the shoulders slip off or the bust gape open? You shouldn’t have to think about your clothing while you’re wearing it.
3. Clothes that suit your lifestyle. Are you a teacher? Stay at home mom? Lawyer? Creative? Retired? Traveler? All these lifestyles call for different types of clothing. You may love the look of a certain type of item on others, but if it doesn’t allow you to do your job well, it’s probably not the best option for you.
4. Clothes that feel like you. Do you like the colors and fabric? Do you feel you’re being true to yourself when you wear this item? There’s something I always ask myself when I’m trying on something. While I might like it, I still ask, “do I look like the person I want to be in this?”
5. Clothes that are easy for you to care for. Do you hate ironing? Linen may not be the best choice for you. Do you want to spend money on dry cleaning? Be sure to read the care label before buying.
6. Clothes that are appropriate to your climate. I’m talking to you, Bare Ankles in Freezing Temperatures!
7. Clothes that are within your budget. You don’t want to go into debt to have the latest and greatest trends. Consider carefully before purchasing: will you really get your money’s worth out of this particular item? Will it last you a long time or will you need to replace it within a year?
All that said, if I really had to choose some actual things that every woman should have, I would say:
- Comfortable, supportive shoes. No shoe, no matter how cute, is worth having sore feet at the end of the day. And once you’ve damaged your feet by wearing thin-soled, non-supportive shoes, that pain is for life!
- Well-fitting, supportive undergarments. These will help your posture, your back, and make your clothes look better!
It’s so fun looking at “The French Wardrobe Basics List,” or “How to Build a Classic Capsule Wardrobe.” The graphics are fun, the palettes are pleasing, it looks so simple to create 365 outfits out of 12 items. But…are those items what you need in your life? On your figure??
Style starts with YOU. You need a closetful of items that work for YOU, whatever those might be.

GREAT post, Bettye!! And you look MAHVELOUS un every image, even if you beg to differ. Great reminders about keeping it simple and that it’s more than ok to be ourselves and go with it. Thank you !

Aww, thanks Pauli 🙂

Oh Bettye, you and I think alike my friend! Loved all you had to say and you look beautiful doing it!

Thanks, Debbie! It’s almost uncanny how similar our posts were!

Bettye, I LOVE this post. I have always bristled at those posts/lists that tell me that I “need” to have a white button down shirt or black slacks (neither of which I own, nor ever miss not owning),etc, because you are right- only you can decide what clothes feel like you. What is essential to me might be a “no way” for someone else, and vice versa. But to advise people to buy clothes that fit your body/budget/climate/lifestyle/fashion sense? That is advice for everyone. Thank you.
bettyewp
Thanks, Michelle. Certainly everyone is different and has different needs. I guess those “must have” lists are just to get people to BUY more black slacks and white button-downs!

It’s funny because I was just thinking about how I hardly have any of the black pieces that everyone says you “should” have. I think color makes such a difference. Granted it’s only taken me 50 years to finally make my closet be cohesive and mostly have the colors that look good on me. Why put something on if it makes you look blah??

I was never much of a “black” person. I finally have SOME, but not a lot – certainly not by New York standards! Black is certainly the unofficial state color of NY 🙂 Does New Mexico have one? Maybe turquoise!

Well said and you are so right. We need to dress for us including weather, comfort, bunions and fit. Thank you for taking this post to the fundamental basics.

I’m all about the basics!

I always love dresses on you! I remember your Tulle skirt and denim jacket outfit that was so amazing! Leopard print suits you also very well! Great Essentials Bettye!

Thanks, Nancy! So funny you should mention the pink tut/denim jacket outfit – my very first blog post outfit – as it’s in my anniversary post this week!

I really enjoyed this post! Great fitting shoes are probably my number 1 and what I’d spend the most on when it comes to fashion. And it’s so true when you said you should not having to think about your clothes when wearing them. A mistake I made buying a very pretty sweater, even exchanging it for a smaller size and I kept it because I so loved the color and softness. Well, it still slides of off my shoulders which drives me insane!
Thanks for sharing!

Yes, color is a temptress! I’ll overlook so many other things when I love the color! I always have to remind myself to not let a beautiful color (or print, or fabric) make me buy something that doesn’t make sense for me, or doesn’t fit right.

Yess!! I detest these one size fits all approaches to anything really and have always marched to the beat of my own drum, in just about everything including fashion! Clothing and fashion to me is an opportunity to mesh functionality with creativity, comfort and fun! Thank you for sharing your cute outfits – I know you said you weren’t fussed on Number 4 but I loved it on you and think you look great in the denim dress and animal print cardi along with the other outfits.

Bettye, you are so right about comfy shoes and fit being the most essential. I enjoyed your take on this theme. While I totally agree that not everyone has the same essentials, I’m guessing we do have some go-to items we all wear! I think it’s fun to see the different ideas about essentials!

Yeah, I’m just starting to understand I might need to spend a little more for shoes to get some that will HELP my feet throughout the day rather than hurt them (and it doesn’t hurt of they’re cute!).
