Match Made in Seven: Fashion Inspiration from My Favorite Movie
Welcome to the monthly edition of Match Made in Seven! We are an international group of fashion bloggers who meet virtually once a month. One of us chooses a theme each month, and that can be anything: a book, music, a color, a movie. And then we all style an outfit based on that theme.
This month’s theme was chosen by Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style and is “Fashion Inspiration from My Favorite Movie” (I may have tweaked that just a bit). See my post about the theme below…and be sure to take a look at my fellow bloggers to see how they have interpreted the theme this month.

Wow, that’s a big ask: What is your favorite movie of all time? Several came to mind, but when I cross-referenced the question with What Movie Had My Favorite Fashion…the choice was easy: Cousins, a 1989 romantic comedy with Isabella Rosselini and Ted Danson (a remake of the French movie Cousin Cousine).
In the movie, Maria (IR) and Larry (TD), cousins by marriage, meet at the wedding of Larry’s uncle to Maria’s mother. At the reception, Larry’s wife and Maria’s husband disappear together for several hours and don’t return until long after the reception is over. Of course, this arouses suspicion in the cousins’ minds. Bonding over their shared outrage at their spouses’ behavior, they decide to pretend that they’re having an affair as well. You can imagine what happens next! Aside from a charming story, the best thing about the movie is Isabella Rosselini’s wardrobe. It is just like her: gentle, feminine, soft, romantic. Delicate pale-hued wafts of fabric draping loosely around her. Oversized softly rumpled linen blazers. Diaphanous floral scarves. Loose dirndl-style skirts. Not to mention her hair! I had several outfits just like this back then, I think we called them “soft suits” back in the 80s.
I find the look classic and timeless. I had hoped to find some pictures of me in the 80s wearing some outfits like this…but under the crazy circumstances we’re living in right now, I just couldn’t find them (#blameitoncoronavirus).
If money and size were no object, it wouldn’t be hard to recreate these dreamy, romantic looks in a modern way today.
So, while impractical, it is fun to live in fantasy-land for a moment and create a modern dream outfit:
Like this…
Or a floaty, soft-structured silk blouse in the palest of colors…
…over a whisper of a skirt.
However, there is a definite shortage of lovely clothes like this in the plus-size realm, especially at affordable prices. Here are a few outfits I was able to put together.
A cream silk top can go over almost anything in your closet to create a softer, romantic look.
A soft-toned, loose fit cardigan as a topper.
Over a flowy linen-blend skirt…
…or a pair of loose-fit pants.
I do hope if you’ve never seen it, that you’ll make a point of watching Cousins. It’s streaming right now (at no additional cost) on Amazon Prime. And make sure to check out the other ladies’ favorite movies and the looks they’ve created!

I love your take on this one, Bettye! I forgot about this movie, and now is the perfect time to watch it again! Yes, that soft style was beautiful and nobody does it better than Isabella Rosselini. I’ve always love Ted Danson! Good take, my friend.

I have not seen the film and with all this time at home now it is perfect. Any other film tips?:)

Glad to be reminded of Isabella Rossellini and her style impeccable style. I have a Pinterest board dedicated to defining (or trying to define) my personal style. The outfit you feature of Isabella in the skirt, blouse and cardi really speaks to me. The colors, soft fabrics, simple femininity. I have pinned from your post. Such classic elegance.

Wish I could have found more pictures from the movie – most of them I had to screenshot from the video so they’re not very good. But yes, that is such a lovely style.

Oh yes, I was a total fan of Isabella Rosselini by her Lancome commercials in the magazines in the late 70s. Very original post Bettye!

Oh, I adored those commercials!

I miss some of those styles from the 80’s and it was a fun read, Bettye! I have not heard of this movie and will have to be on the lookout for this one. Hope you are staying well!

The silk dress Maria wore to the restaurant where they “accidentally” ran into Larry and his family was absolutely DIVINE! I want that dress so very badly! Any idea of where to find something similar or even who made it originally? Thanks!
bettyewp
Oh gosh, I don’t know specifically what dress that is, but I’m sure I loved it cuz I loved them all! I’ll have to fast forward through the movie to find that scene and her dress. I’ve tried to find out wardrobe details from the movie to no avail (SHAKES FIST AT INTERNET). I’ll let you know what I find out.

If you can’t find it on Amazon prime, here it is on youtube at minute 2:29 . When she walks into the bathroom, you can see it best. Isn’t it beautiful? Any tips on where to find something similar is greatly appreciated. ❤️

Oh yes, THAT dress. It’s so beautiful. It always made me think of a “late in life” or “second wedding” wedding dress. I’ve really never seen anything like that, but off the top of my head, Eileen Fisher makes that TYPE of thing, in that very loose, drapey fit, in lovely fabrics and soft colors. If I see anything else like it, I’ll let you know.

Thank you! 🙂
