Evolution of an Outfit
Today I give you…The Evolution of an Outfit.
Still thinking about wearing things I don’t often wear…I started with this dress that I love (and have had since 2015), but I only wear it in cold weather with tights and usually under a chunky blue cardigan. It’s a little short for me with bare legs. But let’s see what I can come up with for today.
I already had the leggings on, so…maybe leave them on under the dress? I see others do it and it looking cute. I’ve done it, but it’s never felt quite right to me. And it’s really not right with these shorter leggings. My longer ones are…well, longer…but also black so wouldn’t be a good option compared with these navy ones.
And what shoes? The clogs I bought last fall because I never could find cognac/chestnut booties and I needed something to wear with dresses and tights all winter but…then I never wore them because I never tried the SNAG tights on?? Why is everything so complicated??
Or maybe the backless sneakers are better. They’re cute, they’re just too big for me and always slipping off my feet. I lost the leggings, wasn’t digging the look…and added the chambray shirt I was wearing today anyway. Looks a little sloppy, this shirt is giant and not in a good way.
Prefer the color and fabric (Tencel) of this shirt. I feel like this color goes with everything. And a couple years back I was all about the “open shirt over dress” look because my options were limited, but it was a little sloppy.
But now, “light blue Tencel shirt tied over dress” is my new best friend. I was playing around with the “tying tightness.” Too tight and it shortens the dress…so I was playing around with a looser tie. I’d need something a little snugger than this, but…basically I like the outfit. If I was actually going out in the world I would wear different shoes because a) these really just flop right off my feet, and b) I have them for sale online right now and I don’t want to risk getting them dirty!
Here’s how it turned out IRL.
I literally stopped on the side of the road where there was a tree in flower to do these pictures! No people. Just me and a couple Canadian geese.

It’s so fun to see your progression for an outfit Bettye!! I definitely don’t think the dress is too short. And maybe you need some of those backless sneakers that fit better because I like how you could see your ankles with them on!!

I like the dress as is, no cover up. Maybe a thin long-ish capri summer legging in a cream color? I’ve started to find a thin legging under a summer dress very practical – helps avoids chafing. Shoes can be a nice flat, something minimalist. The dress is really lovely and fits you perfectly.

I really like your dress, it is a lovely flowing style and print fabric. I think without the shirt over looks great. Maybe a summery pair of shoes with a slight heel too would look good with or without leggings and a short structured jacket in the same blue as your shirt.

Love the dress with leggings and maybe sneakers as opposed to clogs.

Yeah, I love the clogs in theory but I’m having a hard time wearing them with anything. I think in winter with dark tights, they’ll be perfect. I see other people wearing them bare-legged with dresses or cropped pants and it looks fine. But to me, it looks weird on ME.

The dress is good but you are so cutie patootie! The hair! And the smile! ❤️❤️❤️
bettyewp
I’m not a cutie-patootie, YOU’RE a cutie-patootie!

I am really enjoying these posts! I like the backless sneakers with your dress without leggings. To me, the leggings make it look a bit too Puritan? I tend to think that about any dress that isn’t above the knee with leggings though. 🤷🏼♀️
My quarantine insanity has extended from solar lighting everywhere to new patio furniture. It took SIX hours to put it together though. I’m officially crazy now… haha Maybe you should ignore my opinion of leggings with dresses. 😁

OOh, lucky you with new patio furniture! I’ve been lugging around 1950s wrought iron furniture with me from place to place for 30 years and it LOOKS nice but none of it is comfortable to sit in! Once in awhile I try to sell it and get something I could actually sit in so I could use my patio for something other than photo shoots, but…hasn’t happened yet.

I really like the look of a dress with white sneakers to look casual but put-together. I think it would have looked good had you kept the leggings on too. I’m also pretty crazy about the tied up denim shirt!
bettyewp
I’m trying to control myself with the tied-up shirt thing right now because I want to do it with everything! And I really only have a few shirts it works with, so things could get repetitive. I did see a cute pre=tied shirt at old navy that was on sale…I might give it a try even though I am basically anti that type of shirt cuz you can only wear it the one way. But…it would be easier!
Rita
I really like the dress with the tied denim shirt but I also like how it looks with the leggings. I know we’re getting out of the season for this but maybe the leggings would look good with black booties to give you a tights and boots kind of vibe.
Also, in case your backless sneakers don’t sell, I have a pair of clogs that stretched out on me and would fall off my feet as I walked. I got a pair of those Dr. Scholls trim to fit insoles you can get at the drug store and the slipping stopped. May be worth a try.
bettyewp
I did try inserts (cuz I put them in most of my shoes anyway) and it did not help. They’re also very hard for me to get on – the tongue always gets pushed up into the toe of the shoe as I push my foot in. I can’t reach to hold it out while putting my foot in. I love the way they look, but…I’ve had them almost a year and have only worn them half a dozen times cuz they’re just too problematic.

HI I like the dress with the leggings, also like the clogs and the backless shoes. Can I ask what the white thing is on the tree, is it some sort of bird box?
bettyewp
I think you’re talking about the meter or power box? I think that’s what you’re seeing. One of those things you see all the time but never REALLY know what it’s purpose is. But definitely not a bird box. Though that would be very charming.
