I like doing these style sessions. If there are any particular items you’d like to see styled multiple ways, let me know and I’ll see what I can do.

Today is button-down shirts…specifically white button-down shirts. I think that is a timeless piece of clothing that can be dressed up or down, worn to a casual office or a more corporate one, or to a picnic or over a bathing suit!

I love a shirt that is crisp vs limp (do you know what I mean?), where the collar stands up against my neck without flopping down, but the body of the shirt is soft and pliable. I have tried many. Last year I got that white linen blouse from J Jill and that’s great for summer, but it’s really more casual with the tendency to wrinkle. This one is 100% rayon from Loft and I’m really happy with it. It’s still a breathable enough fabric for summer, but can also be worn through the winter.

Look #1

I think a timeless look for a white button-down is tucked into slacks or skirt and worn with a cardigan or blazer. This look can go anywhere. You could dress it up more with jewelry or keep it casual as I’ve worn it here.

Look #2

A way to extend the season of a sleeveless dress or to make it more office-appropriate is to wear it over a button-down shirt. When I was young, sleeve- and collar-less dresses worn over shirts were called jumpers, but I don’t hear that term much anymore…except for sweaters in the UK.

LOOK #3

Definitely a more casual look that I love. Simple but timeless.

LOOK #4

For a more modern look, tie your blouse up over a dress, skirt, or jeans.

LOOK #5

Wear your blouse unbuttoned like a “shacket” (shirt + jacket) over a dress or jeans. This is super casual and perfect for warm weather days when the shirt might go on or off over the course of the day…and it’s easy to tie up (like Look 4) if you need to dress it up a bit to go in somewhere.

LOOK #6

I forget to include this in the Instagram story, but I also like a button-down worn untucked, under a shorter sweater or vest. Or (not shown) tucked in so only the collar and cuffs show from under the sweater.

I do feel this is a very useful item to have in your wardrobe as it can be worn so many ways and be appropriate with so many different styles.

Are there are any other ways you wear a button and would like to share?

PS – I’ll be sharing an IGTV Style Session on white button-downs at 11am (est), Wed., 5/13. Visit @fashionschlub…and also Jodie at @JTouchofStyle, who is also styling buttown-down shirts on Wednesday!
