Looking Cool to Feel Cool (and other stuff)
This post is actually a mash-up of a couple different topics. Bear with me.
Dressing in crisp colors to look cool
Do I look cool? You be the judge. Do I feel cool?? Rarely. But do blue and white look crisp and cool?? YES.
I think blue and white is “crisp” personified. Well, that and cotton sheets. And celery. But we’re talking fashion. You get the point.
It’s a little bit of “fake it til you make it.” Or at least til you can get back in the air-conditioned car.
Interim clothing
Two summers ago I was jonesing for a white dress. I looked high and low, bought dresses from, literally, all over the world. None was quite right. But I Wanted A White Dress (insert nasally whiny voice here)! So when I found this reasonably-priced, decently-fitting white dress from Avenue, I went for it. I knew then it wasn’t going to be my “forever” white dress, but it would do for the time being, til Ms. White came along.
Not feeling like yourself
Each time I wear this, it feels less and less like “me” to me. It feels a little like “trying too hard to look sort of fancy.” I’m not “fancy.” If I want my look to be a little more “elevated,” I prefer wearing simple clothing items in nicer fabrics.
I HATE not feeling like “me” (for better or worse, ha ha). I’ve spent a lot of years figuring out what feels right to me, and while sometimes something shiny (or white) and new might catch my eye, I need to keep remembering the lessons of my past and stick with what I know what works for me. Someday “what works for me” may change – it certainly has, many times over…but for now I feel like I got it.
Do you feel like you have a wide or narrow range of what feels like “you” to you?
What I’m wearing
- White Avenue Dress, size 3x, old. Comparable (but better!) here and here
- Old Navy Blue Striped Blouse, size 3x
- Cognac Birkenstock Madrid Slides
- Whiskey Able Mamuye Tote
- Target Sunglasses

I’m fortunate to work in a well-air conditioned office by day…and my friends mostly know not to expect to see me until a little later in the evening when it gets a little cooler…if at all on a really hot day!

Blue and white look cool and refreshing but I can’t wear a second layer in summer. I have a narrow range of what works in the summer. I like everything about your dress, the sleeves especially! I’ve never figured out what to wear in the heat, LOL 😊
bettyewp
Yeah, this layered look would be a work outfit for me, our office stays really cool in the summer.
The heat is rough!

On the flip side, during mild winters, I rarely wear a heavy coat. Sometimes a vest is enough! LOL 😀

Same.

My “what feels good to me” has changed almost 180 degrees since I retired. I feel free of the responsibilities and MUCH younger!! That’s why I love the fact we can change “our style”. I think our style should evolve and be dependent on our mood instead of one aspect of our life.
I just adore how you’ve been tying the top over your dresses, Bettye.

Well, it may not feel like you to you – but it looks like you – and I like the look. It does look cool and it does look comfortable. Hopefully one of these days you’ll find “the white dress”.

I love the dress too. You look like a very zen version of yourself, swaying with the other natural beauty in your garden photos. I like how you’re tying a shirt over your dresses too. You’re funkier than you think.
I have a very broad version of what’s me. I swerve from boho to funky hippy to classic to hiker (not biker) chic in any given week or month. Sometimes I feel like my clothes are literally costumes, but I like it that way.

I’M FUNKY! I’M FUNKY! 🙂
Costume clothes! So fun, I love it!
