AGELESS STYLE: Dressing For Your Body Type
Welcome to this month’s Ageless Style linkup where each month, ten women share their sense of style.Β This month Jennie of A Pocketful of Polka Dots selected the theme: Dressing For Your Body Type.
If you’ve been following me for any length of time, you know that, to me, “dressing for your body type” means wearing whatever the heck you want!!! I’m more interested in knowing what feels right to me…what is comfortable, what I enjoy wearing…than in following some restrictive rules.
Or, as I like to say, “Bettye Breaks the Rules.”
Many fashion “rules” are about creating “flattering” shapes. But flattering to whom? To Joe Schmo walking towards you on the street? Or to your own eye in the mirror? I don’t know Joe Schmo and couldn’t care less what he thinks about the way I look. I care about how *I* think I look!
First and foremost, I want to Feel Comfortable. Walking, standing, sitting, going about my day. Comfort is Key. Next comes suitability to weather and activity. Once those points are considered, then *I* want to like the way I look!
Here are some old-school “rules” for how plus size women should dress:
Plus Size Women Shouldn’t Wear Bright Colors
Dark colors like black or navy tend to recede. In other words, go stand in a dark corner where no one sees you.
NOPE (unless you like not being seen, then wear all the invisible colors you want).
Curvy Women Shouldn’t Wear Horizontal Stripes
In theory, your eye travels back and forth horizontally to “see” stripes, and I think it’s all the back and forth making your eye move from the right side of your body to the left that makes it seem like your body covers so much width. Wide body = fat. CuzΒ that’s the worst thing to be in life! Spoiler Alert: It’s Not.
Larger Sized Women Should Keep Their Arms Covered Up
Sadly, I think this “rule” mainly comes from women themselves. Women who spend their entire lives never going sleeveless in the summer, or going to the beach or pool for fear of revealing their arms.
Come on, ladies! a) no one really cares aboutΒ your arms…they’re obsessed with their own arms! b) let your arms go free! Just try it. Wear a sleeveless top for 30 minutes at the market. Did your higher power smite you?? No? I didn’t think so. Keep wearing the sleeveless tops!
Basically, the “rules” tell fat women to “look smaller.” Here’s my rule: SHRINK FOR NO ONE. Do YOU. If you’re comfortable where you are, wear whatever you want. “Appearing small” is not the be-all and end-all of life! If you’re not comfortable where you are, then, by all means, make changes to make yourself more comfortable, but in the meantime, Wear What You Like!
Wear the stripes and the puffy tulle skirts and the skinny jeans and the sleeveless dresses and the bikinis…or the caftans or muumuus! Wear what makes you feel like YOU!
There. That’s how to dress for your body type.
Big or small, wear it all!

Bettye, I also turn 60 later this fall, and my ambition is to make it look as good as you do π
Your birthday post on Sat really resonated too. I’m still struggling sometimes with the “coulda woulda shoulda” routine, but your posts are a big help

“I also turn 60 later this fall” – look forward to having you in the club!
Yeah I’m definitely trying to live by the motto: Just Do the Thing. Wear the thing, eat the thing, go to the thing, SKIP the thing…just do what you want to do! Just do it (I realize that is NIKE’S motto, but it’s a good one!).

“Bettye Breaks the Rules” This brought a smile to me π Needed that, thanks !! You look so nice in all these photos. There is a particular color you look stunning in…. kinda a camel color, maybe? (See your striped tank/long cardi, photo #5 – ya that one!) What color is it?
bettyewp
Ha ha, “Bettye Breaks the Rules” is a silly photo series I did years ago, probably on Facebook, where I shared photos of me breaking rules. Standing just inside a “Do Not Enter” doorway, Feeding the Birds, touching things that said “Do Not Touch,” etc. Caleb had his own series of pictures of him posing next to “No Dogs Allowed” signs and romping around “Dogs Must Be Leashed” signs. He was a real card, that one π
And yes, camel.

Do hope those photos surface again π

YES, YES and more YES!!!
So many days I ask myself where the heck the idea that thinner is the winner even came from?? Who decides these silly things? And why are we sheep and believe them??
I’m sharing this for sure!!

You absolutely should wear exactly what you want whatever you age or shape. Comfort wins every time and there should no rules!
Can I say that the colourful blue/red floral dress on the post (the first photo) is just wonderful and you look so good in it. I did think that the green dress of yours was my favourite but this one is the absolute best – it’s really lovely.
bettyewp
Oh yeah, that bright turquoise, coral, hot pink dress was a MOOD. One of my issues with very bright clothing is it’s so NOTICEABLE and I can’t wear those items too frequently cuz I feel like everyone notices (even me). Whereas I can wear denim and a tee over and over cuz it’s not memorable so no one realizes I’m wearing the same thing every day.
Being UNMEMORABLE: GOALS, HA HA

Hi, I love how confident you are. And I love how you dress for comfort and fun. You are beautiful. I am so happy to see women enjoy getting older, I am to getting older that is and enjoying it embracing it! Thank you so much for helping to break down barriers (that only young thin people can dress in colors and fun patterns.)
bettyewp
Oh, I’m all about NO BARRIERS NO RULES! Ha.
So glad you came for a visit, we love new friends!

I think your advice is spot-on! And you look adorable in all your photos. Especially the red striped dress and white button up-I want that outfit!!!
bettyewp
Amanda, welcome! Thanks for stopping by and your kind words. Yeah, this year has been the year of “shirts tied up over dresses” for me, for sure!

What an AWESOME post! I love it! It’s so positive and encouraging! I did something similar in my post but without even thinking about it. I didn’t realize that I was breaking all the rules when I read what an Apple Shape body should dress like. ha ha
bettyewp
Yes! Break all the rules! The rules weren’t meant for US!!! π
