Monday Funday
On, you know, Wednesday. But still.
As happy as I am staying home, in the house, alone, all by myself…it’s good to get out of The Box and go someplace new and different and exciting.
My friends and I had tickets back in March to go to a new thing in New York, called The Edge. It’s the highest outdoor observation in the Western hemisphere, offering 360-degree views through angled clear glass “walls” and a see-through spot in the floor so where you’re standing you seeing straight down below your feet to 100 floors below. But – lockdown back then closed everything up and we’ve been waiting seven months for it to reopen so we could go.
I think this is my first time back in the city proper since then. And while the city is far from desolate, as it was during the height of lockdown, it’s a far cry from normal. Which actually made it a much nicer experience for us traveling in from the Island. No traffic, no crowds, no lines. We even had a little time before going up to The Edge to walk over to The Vessel at Hudson Yards, another recently new “thing?” Exhibit? Feature? Interactive structure? I’m not sure what you call a thing like this. Attraction? Perhaps.
It was a lovely evening. Mild enough for just a light jacket. I got to pull out this jacket I got at the end of last winter but didn’t get to wear for long before it got warm. It’s very thin but that’s usually all I need, especially when doing a lot of walking. I love the Asian vibe (shocker) with the quilted fabric and collarless neckline.
I wore my new cream crewneck from last week’s Trunk Club and I’m really happy with it. It feels so good on, very thin but nicely drapey and swingy. I live for nice heft and drape.
My comfy leopard flats let me walk around all evening (over 6,000 steps, that’s a lot for me) with no pain or discomfort.
The black skinnies have been hanging around for almost six years…which hardly seems possible, but there ya go. They’re the brothers to my beloved Charlotte Russe blue skinny jeans that passed away (aww, ohh) last year due to a ravine-sized tear in the inner thigh.
It was good to be back in the city. New York’s not dead. It’s just resting.
What I’m Wearing
- BP Cream Crewneck Easy Ribbed Sweater, size 3x
- Bronze Madewell jacket, 2x. Sold out. Comparable here and here.
- Black Charlotte Russe Refuge Skinny Jeans
- Aerosoles Leopard Betunia Flat

Thanks for this post Bettye, the last time we visited New York from the UK, ten years ago, to celebrate my husband’s 60th birthday, we stayed at The New Yorker. It was wonderful and your photo brought back lots of lovely memories. I don’t think we’ll be back anytime soon🙁

Oh that’s awesome! The red New Yorker sign is such an iconic beacon on the NYC skyline. What sorts of things did you do when you were here? What was your absolute FAVORITE thing?
Lin
Hi, we took my two sons and their partners, only there for three days, did all the tourist stuff, boat trip, sight seeing tours, Central Park etc. What I love is architecture, so my favourite thing was just walking around, looking up at all the beautiful buildings oohing and ahhing and getting a stiff neck, oh and ‘Walking Down Madison’ which is a quote from my favourite Kirsty Maccoll song! Xx

I’m so saddened by all the rebuilding, ESPECIALLY in Brooklyn and Queens. SO many beautiful old buildings being replaced by shiny, modern, soulless, boxes. Much harder now to find beautiful old architecture. Right now the NYC sky is filled with crane-tops, there is SO much new construction happening, it’s crazy! I hope you get to come back someday before there’s not much left to see!

It sounds like you had a lovely evening and your pictures are awesome as usual! Both cityscape photos are breathtakingly lovely! I’d totally frame them if I were you. I’m a complete scape nerd and have many framed throughout my house from my adventures.
Love the jacket and shoes, too! Comfy (leopard!) flats are rare gems indeed. 🌻
Thank you for sharing.

Thanks, Melissa. I’ll have to see how the pictures would look printed at a large size. I suspect they may not be great cuz it was dark (post=processing lightened them up somewhat) so they’re a little grain-blurred. If I go back I’ll have to see if they allow tripods up there.
Melissa
That’s too bad because they’re gorgeous cityscapes. I love the pop of red in the New Yorker sign!!
This may sound corny, but have you considered selling your photography? If not, you might consider it because you’ve got a great eye for composition! I’d buy a copy of the New Yorker one without a doubt.
Just a thought.

I’ve tried selling prints in the past through online sites but the sites themselves always had SUCH a high markup, that for me to make any money, I had to price the prints SO HIGH. *I* wouldn’t buy my pictures at those prices! And to list on my own on like Etsy or whatever, then I had to do all the printing, packaging, shipping myself and that just seemed like a lot at the time. If I could ever get my act together around here I would consider just listing some pictures on the blog site, but not until I can have some sort of dedicated area for storage, packaging, etc.

Oh my goodness – you’re braver than I would be. The views were outstanding, but I don’t do heights very well.

I’m not generally good with heights, either…and walking into that glass corner was a little AACCKKK!!! But not enough to stop me from getting a once-in-a-lifetime picture (though I’m already planning to take Katie with me next time she’s allowed to NY). And standing on the clear floor didn’t phase me in the least, which was surprising. One of my friends could barely step on it.
But I’ve been feeling braver in general, anyway 🙂

What a fabulous place to go Bettye. It’s nice to know that the city isn’t dead. We used to LOVE visiting and were worried it’s not going to be as good next time.

Well, NOW is a fantastic time to go because it’s so easy to get around! Unless Broadway is your thing, and then you’re out of luck. Shows will be closed through earlyish 2021. It’s really nice with so many streets closed off for outdoor dining. The other night while stopped at a red light, a whole herd of roller/in-line skaters skated by, right on a main avenue…that could NEVER happen in “old” NY! If NY can’t grow in one direction, it’ll grow in another.

You can’t hear me but I’m screaming. Serious fear of heights. Ya look fab though and I’m glad you had fun. But still screaming.
bettyewp
I’m usually really “fear of height-y” too, but…this just didn’t hit me that way. Now, yesterday, walking down an escalator that wasn’t running, THAT terrifed me. Not much rhyme or reason to fear.

Thanks for the great photos of NYC. It almost sorta kinda made me homesick for NYC/northern NJ. Almost 🙂

Ha ha. ALMOST.
