Black and Blue
“The trees are about to show us how lovely it is to let dead things go” ~ Anonymous
It can be hard to let go of the loveliest time of year and let ourselves be dragged into the dreariest. But the world needs time to rest…hibernate…build up energy for spring growth. We all need that. This was A YEAR. Let’s rest up this winter and come back in the spring stronger and more beautiful than ever.
It was a little sad to be in the city this day. The rich fall foliage was all but gone and the light was cool blue-grey. Who knew I’d be walking into blue-greyness wearing blue and black? A little unfortunate, photographically speaking, but…you can’t control everything.
Ha ha – you can’t really control anything! And we have to always remember that nothing stays the same forever…things change…and life goes on.
And in a bit of a cringey segue, I can remember back in the day when Black & Navy was Just Not Done. Thank goodness that old rule has become obsolete because I think navy and black is a very chic combination. I especially love when the navy is very dark, almost black, so there’s only a very subtle variation in color.
This navy blouse is not that dark, but it works with the black items very well.
I feel the same about navy and brown. It used to be a no-no and now I think it’s a great color combo. I don’t know that I can think of any hard and fast color rules anymore, really. There are colors I may not like together, but that’s just personal taste, not a RULE.
I hate rules.
But I do follow the mask rule. Yecch. I hate it but I do it. I kept watch while shooting and anytime people were approaching where I was I’d put the mask on for the few seconds til they were well past me. Annoying, but what are you gonna do?
Stupid masks.
Stupid Covid.
And before I go any further off-topic, I will say goodbye. But I’ll leave you with a question: are there any color rules you remember from Way Back When that you break now? Are there any that you still abide by? Let us know!

Color rules – oh yeah, I remember quite a few. Don’t break too many – too old and they’re just too ingrained. Besides, I think some of them have merit. Anyway, if I don’t “like” two colors together, I won’t wear them. But that’s just me. Pretty much there are no rules today.

Oh yeah, I have lots of my OWN rules (#bettyelivesinaverysmallbox), like no white sneakers with white jeans cuz #looklikeanurse. All black used to be a non-no for me too but man have I zoomed past that one!

I’m breaking the no linen after summer rule. I have a linen shirt and the more I wash it the more I like it so it’s going through the winter.

Yes! Same! I wear my white linen buttondown all through winter, layering it over and under. Now I want a black one! Linen is So Good!!!

A friend of mine used to say blue & green should never be seen except on a fool, but I quite like them together & often wear them. 😂

Break them all I say. I mean, let’s start thinking about the why…and if it doesn’t make sense, then throw it to the wind!!

When it comes to patterns anything goes! Well, it’s a personal preference. I don’t combine pink & red. I favor red.

I remember my mother trying to pound the no blue with brown mantra into me way back when. Ugh.
She’s also the woman who tried to force a brown, with bits of orange and yellows print dress with a mustard color on her fair daughter who always looked and felt better in pinks and blues. She lost her credibility right there!
Go with what you love!

One of the color rules I have struggled to break is pairing black and brown. Like black pants and cognac shoes. But now I love the two together.
Your outfit is very pretty. Great blue color. And I think pairing it with the black just makes the blue richer and more vibrant.

Ooh, almost wore black and brown today. But it’s cold and footwear options are limited so…brown with dark wash blue denim. But eventually I’ll do the black and brown.
I think I *generally* (not always) prefer low contrast – black and black, black and navy, black and true brown, grey and black, grey and navy, etc. I’m okay with black and white. At least in cold weather dressing. Somehow in warm weather all bets are off and I go wild (relatively speaking) with florals and pastels and clashing colors. Sort of weird.
