Monday, June 23 – Friday, June 27

It was just a rainy week of computer piddling and productivity, remote work, napping, reading, writing, sorting out insurances for the future, and reading news about the war that wasn’t, then was, then wasn’t.

I didn’t even pretend that I was going to leave the room.

On Thursday I had a bit of “let’s get out of here,” and my friend G and I went to the convenience store/coffee shop/hamburger place/study lounge next door for a couple hours. Him, to study, me, to just do my same stuff, just in a different place. The chair:desk height ratio was unfortunate, and the chairs quite uncomfortable. But I did it. I got out of the building.

Once.

OH! “My” coffee shop is already being turned into something else! They’re working over there like busy bees…maybe I’ll take a walk by there this weekend to take a peek and see if I can tell what it’s turning into. It’s such a small space, I feel like there are not a whole lot of options! Wonder if whatever it is will be opened before I leave 🙁

Saturday, June 28

Ooh! They’re working so fast down there! Overnight an awning (roll-up) appeared, and a sign on the window. I had to take out my long lens…it’s my not-very-sharp lens, plus I’m shooting through the window screen…but I THINK it says “Wuris: Coffee & Dessert”!!! I’m very excited!

Sunday, June 29

I did it. I left the house. So proud ha ha.

And guess who got me out of my nightgown and into a bra? BTS. There was an exhibit of BTS fan art in a gallery in Seongsu (never town over) so that seemed manageable. My eye was better today than yesterday.

I could not have gone out yesterday. It’s so weird how one day the eye can be pretty (relatively) good – not so irritated, not goopy, a little open…and I’m like oh good, I’ve turned a corner…and then the next it’s back three steps and I can barely look at the computer cuz the light from the monitor (even on low- contrast and black themes) is too painful and I’m just constantly wiping my eye clean and so I just end up laying down with my eyes shut cuz it’s too uncomfortable to be open. That was yesterday. I must have slept like 18 hours out of the past 24 cuz if I lay down with my eyes shut, boom, I’m asleep.

Anyway, today it worked out that I was able to go out not too uncomfortably…although I was very self-conscious when I was the first one in the gallery when it opened (gotta be first!) and the artist who put the show together was talking to me for awhile. I was just like ooh…my eye looks so ugly.

Okay, enough about ME. The exhibit was nice. All original artwork of the members, with the theme of Chapter 2…meaning after military service, they’re more mature now, they’ve all done solo projects now…they’ve had a little time to grow as individuals…soon they’ll come back together as a group…for Chapter 2.

This was my favorite picture (on the right). This is Yoongi (aka Suga, aka August D, aka Min Yoongi), who is my favorite…and if I might brag on his (and Army’s) behalf for a moment…he was the last to be discharged from his military service…and when he was released the news story broke that ha had donated 5billion won – which is $366million US towards a Korean center for children with autism. When Army heard this, they worked to add to his donation, and within about 24 hours they had raised another almost 300million won ($220,000). I feel like BTS Army can mobilize faster and more efficiently than US Amy! Yoongi also helped develop a music program for the individuals with autism and he’s been spending weekends at the center giving lessons and offering music therapy. So proud 🙂

After the exhibit I sweated back onto the bus then dripped my way over to a donut shop I’ve been trying to get to for ages. So many things don’t open til late here. 11am, 12pm, etc. and any time in the past I’ve been over that way and thought I’d get a donut…they were never open.

But today, yay. I sat inside with an ice coffee and had a creme brulee donut that was deeelicious. It had the best bruleed top and was filled with a light custard. And I ordered two other donuts to go – a pistachio raspberry and an earl grey…but when I got home I realized she’d only given me the pistachio raspberry, so sad. I don’t know if I didn’t order correctly or she just failed to put both donuts in the container but…).

Then my sweat and I got back on the bus and returned home…just in time vefore the rain came.

And look at my coffee shop! I walked past on my way to the bus. I see a lot of little (uncomfortable looking) chairs but no tables. Hope they get tables.

And oh yeah, it’s really hot and humid here.

Six weeks.
