This Week in South Korea: July 21-27, 2025

Picking out stuff to ship home. Home? Katie’s house.
Finally got my butt up out of bed and off the drama-box and did something productive. I packed my medium size suitcase with stuff to take to the PO to pack in a big box and ship to Katie’s by boat. It’ll take 2-3 months to get there, so it was a lot of decisions to make – will I need this thing again before October??
Now I just have to get it to the PO.

Ordering tablet. It’s always nice when restaurants have these on the tables – eliminates the whole “speaking while ordering” issue. Sometimes you can also pay right there, but not always.

I had jjajanmgmyeon (noodles with black bean sauce), G had chicken something, and K had…something with veggies and rice. And dumplings and something like bland zeppoles with sugar sauce for the table.

Talked to insurance people (no, that’s STILL not finalized) and made my last Korean psychiatrist appointment. Read. napped.
Went to dinner with K and G. A new Korean restaurant just opened by us – it had really good jjajangmyeong (black bean noodles), reasoanble prices, and a nice vibe. Too bad I won’t be back.

The dr’s new office is high up…and now he finally has an elevator. The last building he was on the third floor with no elevator. That was fun during the knee era.

It was like a peanut butter muffin? It was much better than it sounds, with like a sweet peanut buttery filling inside – like a reeses!

I still hide you in my poetry

Thank goodness I came DOWN that instead of having to go up it

Shadow Tree
Had my final visit with the psychiatrist today, got my last Korean wellbutrin prescription refill. Thanked him. Cried. Ugh.
Rewarded myself for adulting with a coffee shop outing in Gangnam.

They have rooms all over the place with claw machines and gachapon (capsule toy vending machines). And they’re always busy! It’s a popular date activity.

Her room two weeks before moving. I’m nine days from moving and look like…someone whose not moving anytime soon!
I’ve got that apprehensive “oh no, I have to ____” “oh no, the ___ is gonna happen,” that weird sense of foreboding but not knowing exactly what it’s about. I think what might have triggered is an IG post – a young American woman whose been living in Seoul for about five years, we text occasionally via IG…she’s leaving Korea exactly one week before I am…she posted a picture of her room. It is stark white: a bed, a small table, and a cat. Period. That is all that’s in there! And I looked around my room and was like H*LY SH*T!!! There is so much stuff in here!!! So I loaded up another suitcase today with stuff to take to the PO and ship back to the US – cuz it is NOT all gonna fit in my luggage.
On the arrival end, anything that didn’t fit in my luggage I just left for Katie to send me at a later date. For the first 4-5 months she was sending me a package every month with coats and jeans and books, etc. But on THIS end, I can’t leave anything behind! It’s all gotta go, one way or another. And while it’s just a small room…There’s a Lotta Stuff In Here!!!

One of two
I Leave Korea Two Weeks From Today!!!
I’m past “sad,” and moving into anxious panic. On a more productive front, I lugged two suitcases to the post office this morning with the help of my friend from the building. Got it all packed up neatly in their two largest boxes, cost $92 to send them by (slow) boat and I just hope they get to me before I leave FL for TX. Too many moving pieces right now.
I confirmed with my landlady that I’ll be moving out on the 8th..she was like I’ll miss you and I was like DON’T MAKE ME CRY YET IT’S TOO SOON! I have to get a nice gift to leave all the house ladies, they work so hard to make this a really nice home. Fruit baskets are really a popular gift here, not ironically, because fruit is so expensive. I also wanted to take something to the eye department in the hospital since they’ve all also been so sweet and patient with me. But there’s a LOT of them – I couldn’t afford a gift basket for the like 20 people in that office. In the US you could bring a box of Dunkin Munchkins, but I don’t think that’s done here. Gotta think on this.
This coming week I have an appt with the nephrologist to see if the cholesterol meds are working…a haircut and bang perm, and the last eye appointment to see if my eye blood pressure is staying the same even without the meds.
It’s so hot and disgusting out. It’s midnight right now and still 85 degrees with 80% humidity. Supposed to be 99 the next couple days. I’ll probably stay in all weekend, doing the rest of the getting rid of stuff that I can.
Does anyone know where my travel bag is?? Ha ha. It’s so weird that that’s missing. I’ve been through both closets, all the drawers, looked in the suitcases. I can’t imagine I would have taken it someplace empty and just left it there. I took my other bag to the hospital when I went last time, and I took that same bag to the US in March. Where the heck else could it be?? by doing

I’m so going to miss my views
Ugh, I’ve had an earache since Thursday and I’ve been sort of holding it at bay by doing jaw gymnastics but today there was no help for it so I mostly just napped and watched a kdrama for hours while sitting very very still.
Also, while most spam comments are just that, spam…once in awhile I get a prize like this and it cracks me up, “What a material of un-ambiguity and preserveness of valuable familiarity regarding unexpected feelings.” I feel like that would make a great blog post title 🙂

Rooftop clothes drying
I just barely accomplished my tasks of the day: tearing apart more spiral notebooks so I can put them in the recycling, finding the slip of paper with the time of my blood test tomorrow morning (7:30am ugh), and finally, finally, pulled the beds apart to pull out all the stuff underneath. Now I have a ton of trash/recycling to take down and that will be the bulk of what is left to do.
I have a stack of medical receipts close to 2″ thick. I’ve been saving them (maybe one or two accidentally got tossed, but) with the thought that someday I would go thru and add everything up to see exactly what I paid for medical expenses while I was here. Do I NEED that information for anything? As fas as I know, I do not. Is it going to take forever to do that, at a time when I have other things that NEED to be done?? Yes, yes it is. Should I just throw them all out? I mean, I suppose I couold just go back through two years of credit card bills and add them up that way…Thoughts??
When I got tired of doing, I lay down and listened to my audiobook. I’m reading The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah and it is really good. I tell myself I can read an hour a day…but then I can’t stop and one hour becomes two, and three…
I finished up a biiiig work job on Friday, submitted it, and mercifully, haven’t heard anything back yet about the next task. So it was kind of like having the weekend off. I can only do a couple more hours in July anyway…
And that week’s a wrap. The week ahead is busy already and it hasn’t even started yet.

Hi Bettye,
Two weeks?!!?!
I did have a thought on your medical bills. Do you happen to have an HSA account with funds in it? (Maybe from your last job?) You can generally reimburse yourself for medical bills (even foreign ones) using an HSA. Also, if the bills are enough (not that we ever really want that), foreign medical bills would also be deductible on your taxes if they are enough. (I know both of these because I was able to use my HSA to pay for my Mexican gastric sleeve surgery.)
Anyway, I wish I could be there to help you pack up. Instead I have a breast biopsy on Thursday (it’ll be fine, it’ll be fine) and need to prep for a month in Eastern Europe in Sep/Oct.
Sending good thoughts your way,
Robin

One week now 🙁
First, good luck on your biopsy (it’ll be fine). And a month in Eastern Europe! Exciting! I’ve got some countries in that area on my list for when (IF) I want a change from Asia.
And no, I never had an HSA account. But that’s good to know about the possible tax deduction. I’ll have to do the math to see if I’d be eligible. Thanks!
Fingers crossed for you on Thursday!
xoxo Bettye

The Four Winds in so good!!! Good luck with everything. I bet it seems daunting at this point but look what you’ve accomplished already!

SO GOOD!!! I’ve liked other Kristin Hannah books, also, but this one – chef’s kiss!
