Where Bloggers Live: 5 Simple Fall Pleasures I Live For
Welcome! “Where Bloggers Live” started out kind of like HGTV’s “Celebrities at Home,” but…with bloggers! We all like to peek behind the scenes and see inside people’s homes, interests, and lives, so every month this wonderful family of amazing women shares their work-spaces, homes, towns, and thoughts, with posts based on specific prompts. It’s been so interesting over the years to see the different ways each of us interpret the topics.
This month I am thinking of (longing for) my favorite season: Autumn! It’s October 6 as I write this, and I am still sweating in Vietnam…and really missing the cool snap to the air that they must be feeling in New York by now.
The good news is that I leave this weekend for Seoul, South Korea, where I will have two months of glorious fall weather and get to enjoy all my favorite fall pleasures.
Fall Foliage

Fall foliage is so rich and vibrant: the yellows of the gingko treets, the oranges of…well, orange trees, and the fiery reds of Japanese maples. The tapestry of autumn foliage colors is just…perfection.
I get BIZZY in the fall, running around to all the familiar and new spots that have The Best Foliage for photographs. Korea and Japan have been just incredible with their autumn shows of fall foliage. I’m so grateful to be able to experience it!
Cool Weather

What do I do 24/7, 7 days a week from March to November?? SWEAT!!! Oh, how I look forward to cool weather! Others are all “it’s sweatuh weathuh” in the first couple weeks of September, but I’m still sweating through the end of October. So the brief respite I get every year, of just those few months, from November to March, are much appreciated!
Dressing in Layers

And what comes with cool weather?? The opportunity to layer! I cannot layer in warm weather. I would die. But there’s nothing better on a chilly day than to put on a thin turtleneck and then a button-down, and then a lightweight cashmere or merino wool sweater! Finally I can mix a plaid with a stripe, or a floral with a dot, or…you get the idea. Hot weather dressing for me means One Layer. One Thin Layer. Yawn.
Evening Comes Early

I know many people bemoan the shortening of the days, but I can appreciate it as a time of getting home early, putting on my nightgown, and hibernating. All before 6pm. When I try to do that during longer days I just feel guilty that I’m not “out doing something.” I think we deserve a season to hibernate, to just sort of lay low and conserve our energy…spring will be back soon enough and then we’ll have to go out and do something.
Holiday Decorations
I know that over the years, more holidays throughout the year are decorated for…but none as much as the fall. From Halloween to Thanksgiving to Christmas (I know Christmas is in the winter not the fall, but I start seeing decorations and lights go up right after Thanksgiving), the world is just a little more sparkly and special. What’s not to like about that??
These are my five favorite things about fall. Apparently, all it takes to make me happy is some colorful leaves, a light jacket, an early sunset, and a few twinkle lights. I’m pretty easy to please this time of year (and when I’m not sweating).

Okay, okay…Fall i beautiful blah blah blah. I HATE the cold, I just want to wear shorts and complain about the glorious heat.
But…you do make a pretty convincing argument. Speaking of pretty, what a lovely picture of you!
Also…”tapestry of autumn foliage…'” lovely prose for a gorgeus photo.

That picture was maybe before Where Bloggers Live started…back in the days when Fashion Schlub was about fashion.
Fun story about that day: we were at Brooklyn Botanic Garden, in the Japanese garden…and while it was probably October or November, once we were walking around, I was HOT (shocker). Off came the jacket…then I did a Flashdance and pulled the turtleneck off while still wearing the flannel buttondown. You try it. Go ahead. I was quite proud of myself for such a gymnastic feat 🙂

I laughed out loud about people wearing sweaters in September. It was a HOT month here in Alabama!!

I do not understand sweaters in September either because it’s still summer weather (yes, even in Minnesota). Do people think sweater is “the thing you put on to sweat”?? I endorse all of your simple fall pleasures!

Ha, yeah, I start seeing comments about Sweater Weather and Pumpkin Spice EVERYTHING, and I’m just like GUYS, HOLD UP A MINUTE! Were not there yet!
I DO remember getting new school clothes and they were all fall clothes, sweaters and plaid, and you so wanted to wear them on the first day of school…when it was still 85-90 degrees and you were just DYING!!!

Maybe you were a bear in another life?? Your love of hibernating…and loving the colder weather. Maybe a polar bear that belongs at one of the poles??
The leaves are incredible…we don’t get that here, but the cactus are blooming next door to us.

I don’t think I’d mind being a bear. But a brown or black bear, not a polar bear. That’s TOO much ice…and I don’t know if they hibernate…? Which would sort of defeat the whole purpose of being a bear 🙂

I totally forgot about the changing leaves — one of the downfalls of living in Louisiana! Seeing your picture made me miss that part of life in Pennsylvania and Missouri. Speaking of leaves, that picture of you is beautiful.
How did I forget you’re in Vietnam right now?

Ha ha, yes, SHOCKING that you’re not 100% keeping up with someonee else’s itinterary! Listen, *I* can barely keep up with where I am where I’m going what I’m doing what day/month/season it is, let alone what anyone else is doing!
PS – now I’m in Korea 🙂 Make a note ha ha ha

So funny, I wouldn’t have associated stellar fall foliage with the countries you are going to be visiting. I am so ignorant of the rest of the world – geography, climate. Gingko trees do give maples a run for their money in the fall. Had never really seen gingkoes until we started visiting PC’s family in Ohio in the fall. You can’t help but notice and fall in love with them.
I seem to be suffering from menopause 2.0 or at least the hot flashes associated with that season of life. I am burning up again. No layering yet over here. We are still having highs in the upper 80s accompanied by very rare humidity – like 60% humidity. Unheard of.
Did returning to Korea feel like going home? Hope you are enjoying fall weather, shorter days, fall foliage and a chance to wear those layers.

I don’t think there’s much fall foliage color change in Thailand or Vietnam (SOME, but not like you’re picturing)…but Korea and Japan knock fall foliage out of the park! It’s a little early yet here, I don’t expect to start seeing much til November. And yeah, the gingkos yellow first, before the maples turn red and orange. They’re all so beautiful!
Oh no, not menopause 2.0! I feel like I bypassed menopause entirely. I think the cancer sidetracked it.
Yes, returning to Korea felt like coming home. There’s a lot of familiarity, but also a lot of not 🙂
I’ve still been sweating the past couple days when I went out…but today I just crashed inside…had the window open all day til I woke up from a nap around 4pm and was freezing! Tomorrow looks like a high of 68 degrees, which sounds glorious!
