Last Day of Summer – Really!
The past two weeks we’ve been bombarded with pictures of pumpkin lattes and cozy sweaters and all the spicy brown tones…but really, that was jumping the gun just a bit! Tomorrow is the last day of summer, for real, so today I am showing my last summer outfit of the season (sadface).
It was my one big splurge slash birthday present to myself – this Johnny Was top in a lovely summer blue. Like my favorite Junarose dress, I feel so free and floaty in it, and apparently free and floaty is my favorite way to feel. Unrestricted. Like flowers swaying in the breeze.
At least in this top, I sort of feel that way.
It’s important to have clothing that feels good to you. That feels good on you.
The end of a season is a good time to assess your summer wardrobe, whether it worked for you…whether it felt good for you. I’ll be going through my closet soon and reviewing my summer wardrobe – what worked and what didn’t. I’ll share that review with you. I hope it will help you with your own wardrobe.
I feel a little like the top of a beautiful birthday cake with tiny blue ruffles and roses.
The End.
What I Wore:
- Johnny Was tunic top, size 3x. No longer available, similar here and here in plus size and here and here in straight size.
- Gloria Vanderbilt Amanda jeans, size 22W short. Plus here and straight size here.
- New Balance sneakers

Ohhh I love that top – and it looks great on you. I’m tired of summer clothes, though I’ll be complaining soon enough that I’m too cold.

While I am a looking forward to switching out my wardrobe for some things I haven’t seen since last winter, I am NOT looking forward to the struggle of getting into tights and boots. I think I may just have to invent something better 🙂

All the Johnny Was Tunic Tops you’ve shown look very good on you. This one is maybe my absolute favorite. Next summer I will definately have an eye on them!
I’m so tired of this looong summer and look forward to wear a simple V-neck sweater (which I own in several colors) with jeans and a nice pair of sneaker.
If we don’t get snow (I live in Bavaria) I rarely don’t wear boots.
Your video of lavender makes me almost smell the perfume.

Thanks, Barbara. I love so many of the Johnny Was items but they’re usually wayyyy out of my price range. I bought this top pre-worn from Gwynnie Bee so it was like half-off. But usually through the rental service is the only way I can wear them.
Ooh, Bavaria! That sounds like a lovely place to live…cool, crisp, do you ever have humidity??
Debbie from Illinois
So pretty! 💕

Thanks, Debbie. I *felt* pretty in it. I’ve decided it will be my warm weather “first date top.” If I ever have one of those.

It’s funny how everyone is so excited for the next season, and I’m still loving the warmer temperatures so I can finish wearing my summer things! Maybe I have too many summer things?? But I love the fact that I’m not freezing all the time.
And this top was a perfect splurge….it’s all kind of wonderful on you, Bettye!!
XOXO

I’m very pleased with my purchase – I’ve really bought so little this year that I decided to treat myself to something special. No buyer’s remorse here!
And yeah, I’m NOT looking forward to all the nonsense that fall/winter wardrobes bring. Putting on tights is my nemesis. Until you’ve been really plus-sized you can’t even imagine the frustrating (and sometimes dangerous!) contortion work-out that it is. But in our cold climate, they are a necessity with dresses. So I’ll go as long as possible in summer dresses with cardigans and bare legs – my version of transitional dressing 🙂

Oh that top is absolutely gorgeous! The color is so pretty, and it looks like it was made for you Bettye. I love it and all of your wonderful photos.
I know I am in the minority here, but summer is actually my least favorite season. My hair goes flat and frizzy simultaneously, my complexion goes bright red, all makeup melts off, and I sweat constantly. Even in the shower, I just cannot get cool. I stop drinking coffee, which I love because it’s just too hot. I don’t drink alcohol in the summer either, because it intensifies my sweating. I feel terrible in the summer, lazy, cranky and unmotivated. I am so much happier in the cool and the cold weather, and I look so much better too!
I feel your pain with the tights. Itchy and uncomfortable. Not my favorite feeling.
But fall is coming and with it, boots, jeans and DRINKS!!! Preferably by the fire.

Thanks, as always, for your kind words, Susan <3
I don't like the heat. Unless I'm going to the beach (and I spend a lot of time in the water), I tend to spend most of my summer in air conditioning. I wait for less hot days to do outdoor things on cuz the heat just kills me. But I like the long days, and the fact that I have so many more daylight hours after work to do things (if the temps are bearable!). In the fall/winter, shorter days BUT…SNOW. And I love snow. And snow days. And snowfall.
I actually like WEARING tights…I find them cozy and warm…they are just a BEAR for me to get on. Reaching my feet WITH TWO HANDS AT THE SAME TIME is practically impossible for me and pretty much a requirement for putting on tights (and tying shoes, for that matter). I like wearing dresses to work more than jeans but the past few winters, tights have just been too hard to deal with so….
Every season has its pros and cons! The good thing is they never last too long.

This top is so cute! You look amazing Bettye. I can imagine that you are happy with your buy.

SO happy, Tina!

That lavender field must have smelled so lovely! Isn’t it so sad that summer is over. Next week it will be very cold over here and I’m not ready for it!
Fashion Schlub
Wow, the cold comes there early! It will still be mid-70s to mid-80s (fahrenheit) here for the next couple weeks…and maybe get a little chilly by the end of October. I do like that first month of chilly as I can dress normally and NOT SWEAT 🙂 Avoiding sweating has become one of my over-riding goals of LIFE!

I noticed the floaty fabulousness of this top on Instagram…it’s beautiful and it’s obvious you feel beautiful in it! Here’s the thing about seasons…I hate being too hot and I despise being too cold. My sweet spot is right around 65 to 70 degrees and Fall is absolutely my season. Once the leaves change I’m in my glory. Tragically there’s only about 20 days out of the year that are right on the money…lol!

I’m like you, not liking either of the temperature extremes, though my sweet spot is a little lower than yours – more like mid-50s. But I do like the things the extreme temps BRING, great beach days and SNOW DAYS!

I love your summer top and white pants. Your blouse looks so free flowing, comfy and stylish. And I am still wearing white pants even though it’s technically fall today. I would like to wear white pants all year long. Love love your blog.

Thanks, Maude! So glad you came by and left such a nice comment! I plan to wear my white jeans All Year Long! I can’t wait to wear them with my favorite grey turtleneck…and my camel duster…and so much more! I feel like they go so nicely with all the fall tones.
Hope you come back! Let me know if you keep wearing your white pants!

Such a beautiful top Bettye! Wearing clothes that feel good is so important, that’s something I’ve come to appreciate with getting older. The lavender looks lovely – I picked some yesterday and put it in a vase to make the kitchen smell nice 🙂 It’s getting quite chilly here in the UK, especially in the mornings. But just when I think it’s time to get the big coats and sweaters out we have a couple of warm days to throw me! Thanks for linking up!

After a couple cool dry days we’re back today to tropical humidity and mist, UGH.
When I was younger I definitely dressed more for looks, but now I’m comfort first, all the way!
