Last Day of Summer – Really!

The past two weeks we’ve been bombarded with pictures of pumpkin lattes and cozy sweaters and all the spicy brown tones…but really, that was jumping the gun just a bit! Tomorrow is the last day of summer, for real, so today I am showing my last summer outfit of the season (sadface).

FS 9.18.18 1

It was my one big splurge slash birthday present to myself – this Johnny Was top in a lovely summer blue. Like my favorite Junarose dress, I feel so free and floaty in it, and apparently free and floaty is my favorite way to feel. Unrestricted. Like flowers swaying in the breeze.

I wish I could be more like those flowers, gently swaying, bending softly to the wind…

At least in this top, I sort of feel that way.

It’s important to have clothing that feels good to you. That feels good on you.

FS 9.18.18 2

The end of a season is a good time to assess your summer wardrobe, whether it worked for you…whether it felt good for you. I’ll be going through my closet soon and reviewing my summer wardrobe – what worked and what didn’t. I’ll share that review with you. I hope it will help you with your own wardrobe.

I feel a little like the top of a beautiful birthday cake with tiny blue ruffles and roses.

Happy Valentines/Anniversary to Me!

bettye rainwater fashion schlub over 50 style long island plus size blogger 1.21.18 4 resized

So, not only is today Valentine’s Day, it’s also Fashion Schlub’s two year anniversary! Though it still feels pretty new to me as the first nine months of last year were pretty much a loss with all that cancer nonsense. Thank goodness THAT is behind me!!!

I really enjoy doing the blog. I get frustrated when I can’t make it be exactly the way I want it, when the pictures are not the quality I envision, etc. But as much as I enjoy doing it, there will be a time soon when I want to start monetizing it. I know followers can be divided on how they feel about bloggers making money from their blogs, and I that’s why I wanted to talk to you about this now.

fs valentines 3

I would never endorse or recommend anything I would not use myself or do not like. I have had brands approach me in the past year, but none of them were for products that I thought made sense for my readers. There was a company selling like really over-the-top,  Southern-belle-esque prom-type dresses. And while the contact person thought their company and I were A Great Fit…uhm…huh?? There was a shoe company with really stylized shoes – very high heels, very trendy…and not only would not wear them, I can’t really imagine any of my readers wearing them either. So, pass. There was a fitness leggings company that approached me, and I did like their leggings and would have liked to try them out, but the email came last year while I was in the hospital and I just missed the opportunity.

The point is, if you see me sharing links to items in a post, you can be assured that I would wear or use that item…I would never recommend something to you just for the money.

bettye rainwater fashion schlub over 50 style long island plus size blogger 1.21.18 9 resized

So, yeah. I would love to think that the blog (and offshoot opportunities) will someday make enough money to supplement my retirement income and I won’t have to work forever and forever! Doesn’t that sound lovely??

And now for something a little more fun – this Valentiney red kimono from Johnny Was via Gwynnie Bee. It’s the perfect Valentine’s red with just a nod towards wine. I wore it to the arboretum a few weeks back over a black base layer of Faded Glory leggings and a Joan Vass tunic – both plus-sized. And my Payless black flats that I Will Never Ever Ever Wear Again because they cripple me in a matter of minutes.

It was a perfect day in the Camellia House at Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay, NY. Freezing outside and just the right amount of cool inside the greenhouse. My girlfriend and I did pictures then sat on a bench and just talked and talked. Until we got hungry and then we moved on, ha.

fs valentines 2I’m in California for Valentine’s Day, with my daughter and extended family. It’s good. So good I don’t want to go back home. But I never want to go back back home after spending time in California.

So, Happy Anniversary to Fashion Schlub…Happy Valentine’s Day to all y’all…and xoxo to my friends and family.

Thanks, Mochi, for the beautiful pictures!!!

My 10 Favorite Outfits of 2017

AKA It Was Too Cold Last Week to Get a New Outfit Photographed (if I’m being honest) So Let Me Recycle Some from Last Year. In my defense there WAS a snow bombogenesis cyclone, or whatever they ended up calling it. Translation: there was a lot of snow, a LOT of wind, and temperatures in the single digits all week. I thought I would be able to make some new outfits out of the items from last week’s winter haul, but in reality I sent everything back except one thing – that’s a conversation for another day. So, blah blah blah, I have nothing new to post this week. But I do like taking a look back over the past year and revisiting my outfits, sharing with you what worked or didn’t work for me. So. That’s what I’m gonna do!

#10 – Old Navy striped dress with Charlotte Russe tencel button-down and my beloved Superga velcro sneakers. I love an easy outfit. I love stripes. I love this tencel blouse over just about anything. Win win win.

ootd 9.12.17 resized

#9 – Hey look, the tencel button-down again! This time with a grey long sleeved tee from Avenue and this amazing Lucky Brand cardigan (rented from Gwynnie Bee), over Charlotte Russe cropped skinny jeans. I love the concept of layering, and it looks so great on slim straight bodies. I have a hard time making it work right, or look right to me, on ME. Still, this was a good attempt.

#8 – This time I’m repeating the Charlotte Russe skinny jeans…now with a white linen blend tee from J. Jill and a dreamy Johnny Was kimono rented via Gwynnie Bee. This kimono was so so pretty.

#7 – Hey, guess what I’m wearing again? The Charlotte Russe skinny jeans and the linen blend tee from J. Jill. This time with a lightweight cardigan from Torrid. And my Supergas. First day wearing them. And I fell on a hill and almost rolled into the pond in them!

#6 – Ah, the much-loved (and much-worn!) magic black (or maybe it’s black magic!) swing dress from Asos…with the much sought-after denim jacket from JC Penneys, a borrowed leopard scarf, my Gorjana hoop earrings from Nordstrom, with lined footless tights from Maurice’s and black booties from Avenue. Super comfy and can go just about anywhere.

#5 – Another Old Navy jersey knit dress with the ochre chenille cardigan from Target that I am UB-SESSED with. The color is amazing, it’s super soft and cozy…and the length is perfect for dresses or pants. Same tights and boots as above.  Vintage Echo scarf that belonged to my mother. Thanks, Mommy!

RMPS0430

#4 – A super cute botanical print top by Junarose from PlusBKLYN under olive green fleece cardigan from Rainbow, black leggings by Faded Glory from Walmart, with my comfiest sneakers from Adidas.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater long island plus size fashion blogger 11.12.17 3 blogsized

#3 – Uh-huh. I wore a dress that looks like vintage Christmas wrapping paper. I’m a real bad-ass. Come on – how cute is it?? The dress is from Cow Cow, the black cardi is Old Navy…tights and booties same as above.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater plus size fashion blogger 12.17.17 7 resized

#2 – Nothing dramatic here, but a solid pulled together look that I’ll wear a gazillion times. Old Navy striped jersey knit dress (yes, I have a lot of them!), Old Navy cardigan, golden mustard scarf from TJ Maxx, otk boots from Avenue.

Fashion Schlub Bettye Rainwater plus size fashion blogger20171202_0006

And my #1 Favorite Outfit of 2017 is this amazing bird print dress by Junarose, from PlusBKLYN. I know this isn’t much of an “outfit,” it’s just a stand-alone dress. But that’s what makes it So Perfect!

fashion schlub bettye rainwater plus size over 50 blogger 7.10.17 1 resized

I’m sure you noticed there’s a lot of repetition among my favorite outfits. I’m grateful to have so many pieces I like enough to wear repeatedly! I feel like I’ve chosen well when something gets a lot of wear.

I’m not putting links to the items cuz they’re all old and out of stock (well, the two Junarose items might still be available on the PlusBKLYN site – they were still there the last time I browsed there). But they’re mostly such basic items, each of the mentioned sites probably has something extremely similar.

Thanks for taking the little walk down memory lane with me!

xoxo

Free’n’Easy

fashion schlub bettye rainwater plus size fashion blogger johnny was kimono 5.27.17 5 resized

I. Love. This. Kimono. To me it represents freedom, peace, joy, beauty…EASE. Things that have been sort of missing from my life lately. I’ve been so exhausted from treatments that my only time outdoors is pretty much walking from the car to wherever I’m going…and back again later on. I’ve missed beautiful spring evenings and beach sunsets.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater plus size fashion blogger johnny was kimono 5.27.17 4 resized

But this day I managed to spin a couple times…and walk in the grass barefoot…and feel a little easy and free.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater plus size fashion blogger johnny was kimono 5.27.17 3 resized

Fashion can do that for you. It can transport you, make you feel like a different person or like you’re living a different kind of life. And right now I need some of that.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater plus size fashion blogger johnny was kimono 5.27.17 6 resized

Do you have something special you wear when you want to feel better?

fashion schlub bettye rainwater plus size fashion blogger johnny was kimono 5.27.17 2 resized

And the good news is, I finished radiation last week…and I’m starting to feel a little more human again. Not SO exhausted all the time. Staying up past 7pm, ha.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater plus size fashion blogger johnny was kimono 5.27.17 1 resized

So here’s to feeling free’n’easy…whether in spirit or style.

What I’m Wearing:

  • Johnny Was embroidered kimono via Gwynnie Bee, 3x
  • Charlotte Russe skinny jeans, size 24
  • J Jill linen blend tee, size 24

What’s Your Style?

AMB_4498 FB

Ever feel confused by what your style is? I do! I feel like there’s such a disconnect between what I LIKE, what feels appropriate to my life/place in the world, and what feels comfortable.

johnny was collage 3

I LIKE sort of a boho, hippie, Free People, festival, artsy look – lots of long flowy layers, gauzey and lacey and floral. But that never feels right to my LIFE. I work in an office. In a school. And while it’s on the casual side, it’s *business* casual, not hippie casual. And what I feel most *comfortable* in is (true confession) *frumpy* casual. Leggings, jeans, tunics, sneakers. And yes, I’m trying to do better, to BE better, to look better…but I’m finding it difficult to navigate a “look.” Something that satisfies my aesthetic sense, but is also practical in the workplace and my social life. And that I can find in my size (always a challenge) and that I can afford!

AMB_4464 FB

One tool that helps with that is Gwynnie Bee, a “Netflix-style” plus-size clothing rental service. I can try all sorts of different clothing, wear it for as long as I like, see how it fits, not just size-wise, but style-wise.

johnny was collage 1

This beautiful velvet kimono is by Johnny Was, and I would never in a million years be able to buy it…but I *am* able to rent it and enjoy wearing it for awhile. This item sort of allowed me to be Hippie Boho me for a couple days, which was fun…and then return to Business Casual me. I think being such a dark color it acted well as a gateway item to more hardcore artsy looks in the future. Next time I’ll be a little more daring!

AMB_4520 FB

I let the kimono be the star of the show by wearing it over a simple black dress.

AMB_4435 FB

That day in that outfit was the exact opposite of the bad clothing day I’d had the week before. Isn’t it amazing how much our clothing and appearance can affect our emotions and mood?!

johnny was collage 2

Do you know what your style is?

AMB_4551 FB

I was fortunate enough that day to be photographed by the amazing Annemarie Bain who has produced shows we all know, like The Maury Povich Show, The Nate Berkus Show, and more. I am in love with these pictures…and am trying to decide if it’s weird to make a large print of ME and hang it on the wall. Is that weird? It’s just that in one picture in particular, she really captured how I want to feel…

AMB_4477 FB

It’s interesting, I have this vintage oil painting that I have always loved…of a woman walking along the seaside, face lifted to the sea breeze. She looks so content and I always thought That is How I Want to Feel – sort of free, unencumbered, just feeling the ocean breeze in my hair. And Annemarie captured that feeling perfectly in this picture, not even knowing about the painting in my home. Kinda cool, right?

What I’m Wearing

  • Johnny Was Domoto Velvet Jacket, 2x
  • Kate Hill black dress
  • Avenue vegan leather boots
  • Black beaded tassle necklace, Walmart ($5!!!)
  • Verdigris earrings, Maurice’s
