Where Bloggers Live: Things I Always Say
Welcome! “Where Bloggers Live” started out kind of like HGTV’s “Celebrities at Home,” but…with bloggers! We all like to peek behind the scenes and see inside people’s homes, interests, and lives, so every month this wonderful family of amazing women shares their work-spaces, homes, towns, and thoughts, with posts based on specific prompts. It’s been so interesting over the years to see the different ways each of us interpret the topics.
This month’s Where Blogger’s Live prompt is Things You’ll Always Hear Me Say.
I’ve collected sayings from movies, tv shows, and other people all my life…then use them myself. Some come from inside jokes, so…may not make sense to others, but here we go, for better or worse.
Don’t be sad cuz your sun is down / You remember fun, don’tcha? You’re supposed to ENJOY IT!
This comes from my closest bestest friend in my mid-20s to early 30s…and then, for reasons unbeknownst to me, we were no longer friends. Which is always sad. I found her phone number once (she’d moved out of state) and called her maybe ten years since we’d last been in touch…she answered and I was like NAME!!! She goes “you’re so weird.” And we proceeded to have a long conversation like we used to when we were friends. At the end I asked for her current email (mine was the same)…but the one she gave me, when I emailed her to follow up, bounced back 🙁
ANYWAY. She used to say these two things: Don’t be sad cuz your sun is down…and you remember fun, dontcha? You’re supposed to ENJOY IT! I don’t know where SHE got these from, but they have stuck with me all this time and I still say them to this day.
Always Go Through the Open Doors
This is just a mantra of mine – meaning, consider every opportunity that presents itself to you, give all things a try. With things I want to do I say as long as the doors in front of me remain open, I’ll just keep going through them (which is how I ended up living in South Korea for two years!).
Hoping for the Best but Expecting the Worst
This from the 1984 Alphaville classic, Forever Young. And this truly has been my mantra – hoping for the best but expecting the worst. Pretty self explanatory, a balanced viewpoint in my eyes.
Chin Up, Young Person
This is a line from the 1998 movie with Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd, “The Object of My Affection.” There’s a dance class scene, they’re taking ballroom dancing classes…the instructor goes to (one of them, I forget which), and lifts their chin with her finger and says “chin up, young person.” She said it very literally, but I took and use it figuratively…meaning, like…not cheer up…but sort of. Chin up is little more to me like “put on your big girl panties and get on with it” – with a good attitude.
Turtle Run
And the last one I’ll share I attribute to my bestest friend Mochi (names have been changed to protect the innocent, but that’s really what I call her). One time we were going to do a 5K run to benefit turtles…of some sort, I don’t remember exactly. As the date of the run got closer, we were each (unbeknownst to the other) waffling about going. And the day before, or the day of (the details are blurry), we were both like, “do you want to do it?? cuz if YOU still want to do it, I’ll do it,” but we realized neither one of us really wanted to do it…so we mutually begged off. We TURTLE RAN it. Now, anytime there’s something you THINK you’re going to do, but in the end you bail…you’ve “turtle run” it.
And that’s enough for one day…some honorable mentions (with no context given) are:
“Nice kitty, nice kitty, nice kitty…BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD”
“What’cha eating under there” “Under where?” “You’re eating UNDERWEAR UNDER THERE???”
Anytime I see army tanks, oil tanks, fish tanks, water tanks (you get the picture), I ask, “what’s that”” Until I get the response “tanks,” to which I loudly respond YOU’RE WELCOME! I’d probably list that one under Stupid Dad Jokes, but still. I use it whenever I can.
Please visit my friends’ blogs to see what things they say!

OH. MY. GOODNESS!!! Your number one saying is one of my favorite James Taylor songs. LOVE, LOVE, and was compelled to play it while commenting here. So…thank you for that.
I wouldn’t take that friend loss too personally. I send you emails and they bounce back ALL the time. There are two in my outbox now that refuse to make their way to you.
Turtle run is absolutely going to enter my lexicon. My first guess was that it was a great description for being late, like my post today got posted via turtle run. But your description is WAY more fun. Actually, I liked ALL your phrases, and you’re dad joke, too.
As per usual, I commandeered your clever topic for a particular purpose, but if I had stuck with the program, I would’ve certainly included “And we have paid for it with many lives.” It’s sourced from the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and uttered by the king after noting a harrowing journey to safety. I, however, use it when we complete a task that is somewhat labor intensive or unfun, like cleaning the basement.
REALLY enjoyed this post…and this topic!

“Your number one saying is one of my favorite James Taylor songs.” Wow! How did I NEVER know that?!? I, who looks up EVERYTHING on the internet! I guess back in this days, Ask Jeeves didn’t compel me the same way that Google does today 🙂 I’ll have to listen to the song and see if I’ve ever even heard it. That’s crazy.
Oh, I think she intentionally distanced herself from me. The only thing I can even think is…I’d mentioned she’d moved away, from Long Island to Virginia, got herself engaged to a nice man and I was invited to the wedding…with a Plus One. So I brought the man I was seeing at the time, who I don’t think Friend liked. He was living in Philadelphia at the time, so I’d gone there, and we left from there early the morning of the wedding. He was in a bit of a MOOD, a little hangry…so before we got to the wedding town, I suggested we got off the highway at a rest stop so he could get some food and maybe dissipate his foul-ish mood. Well, getting off and getting back on the highway put us right in some bad accident traffic…and we walked into the church JUST as Mr & Mrs New Bride & Groom were walking UP the aisle and out of the church. We had missed 99.9% of the ceremony 🙁 Obviously in the reception line and again at the reception I apologized PROFUSELY, as did My Man Friend, proclaiming it Entirely His Fault. Anyway. Things were never really the same between us after that. I GET being upset that one of your best friends missed your wedding ceremony, but…come on. ForEVER. Then, a year or so later, I heard she was pregnant, yay, whoopee! I reached out to her sisters to say whatever you’re planning for the shower, I’m in – I want to be involved. Okay, they said. I kept follwing up – anything yet? It’s getting closer. They needed to pick the date as they were the ones who had contact with all the family. It got closer and closer…then I finally I get a phone call – the shower is this coming weekend, it’s all planned, just show up. Huh?? I had a 5-year-old child at the time, was working full-time, couldn’t just get away on such short notice. I don’t remember all the details but I couldn’t find anyone for Katie to stay with…and the long drive on short notice, AS WELL AS feeling annoyed that they had kept me 100% out of the loop on this, I just…I said I couldn’t go. I’m sure that was the nail in the coffin as far as our friendship was concerned. But I never felt it was all on me. Why didn’t they include me from the beginning? Ugh. I think things just drifted to the end at that point. She was esconced in her new life, she probably felt wronged by me by my “behavior” re her wedding and baby shower…but I felt just as wronged by her. Maybe this far out it all looks a little more like 60/40 my fault than it did to me in the past, but still. I kept apologizing and yet. It just died. Which was really a shame. She’d been SUCH a good, fun friend and almost constant companion during our mid-20s, we lived together for a time, she loved Katie to DEATH once she became part of the equation, I knew her whole family and felt pretty accepted by all of them AS family. Maybe it was all my fault.
Anyway. I don’t think this was the result of a couple emails gone awry 🙁
Wow Bettye, air your dirty laundry much??

You’re not even close to a dad, so you gotta stop with the dad jokes, LOL
Yours were funny….mine were obviously too serious/ You can see my state of mind lately.
XOXO

Ohhhh, I didn’t even think about the movies, TV shows, and song lyrics that I randomly quote. My sister and I yell “Riiiiiiiiiiiichard” whenever we start to lose our cell connection. It’s a line from “Somewhere in Time’ with Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve.
Your Turtle Run story made me laugh because that is sooooo me. I’ll agree to everything and be all enthusiastic about it at the time and then I’m like dramatic whyyyyyyy did I do this?
bettyewp
Oh yeah…I should have thought more about movies…a couple other things I say A LOT: We’re gonna need a bigger boat (Jaws) and It was a hell of a day at sea, sir! (Overboard). Also, BTS quotes (ha ha): “You’re doing great, keep going” (Min Yoongi), “STOBBIT” (Jin), and “I don’t have think” (Yoongi).
That’s what you get when you do your report the night before it’s due.
SOMEDAY I need to watch Somewhere in Time. I’ve seen so many clips and it looks appealing, I just can barely stomach Jane Seymour 🙁
And yeah, there’s no better plan than the plan you make…and then cancel 🙂

Oh my goodness – those sayings are great!

Open doors. You are the queen of looking for and going through open doors. I could have filled pages and pages with the made up words my family has for things. Didn’t think about going in that direction. But maybe in another post some day. I bet Iris would have had some interesting responses to this month’s prompt.

It’s funny, I thought of Iris the other day, as I was stopped at a light next to a patch of iris foliage <3
Also funny about the open doors - as what I always say I WANT is a comfortable chair in the shade with a breeze and a book...and what I DO is look for more things to DO.
