Old & New
What is the oldest item of clothing you have that you still wear?
Mine is this blue top that my mother bought me from Macy*s in NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR. It’s 35 years old. Truth. And I still wear it. It only gets limited public viewings anymore, but just this morning I wore it to the market and deli (I know, once a schlub, always a schlub!). So. It is magical in that it has somehow stayed with me through, gosh, like a 150lb weight gain! How is that even possible? And yet. Interestingly, she bought me two of the same shirt – this one and the same one in a chamois yellow. That one was never as nice – not as soft, not as comfy. It got donated or thrown out long, long ago.
I’ve mentioned before that I do keep things a long time, but…that blue top is the winner. I don’t keep it for sentimental reasons, I keep it because I still enjoy wearing it. But it does make me sentimental. My mother passed away 29 years ago. I no longer have many (if any) other things that she bought for or gave to me. I have things that were hers, that I inherited when she died, but that’s different. So it’s nice to have something that makes me remember her a little bit whenever I put it on or just see it in the drawer.
My newest items, purchased on a spur-of-the-moment trip to Torrid when I was looking for something for the Match Made in Seven photoshoot, are this black and white (SHOCKING) empire top and red waterfall front cardigan. They were having a Buy One Get Two Free sale, so it seemed ridiculous to not buy two additional items!
I haven’t had anything red in my wardrobe for a pretty long time and this just kept calling me from the sale rack. It’s lightweight, so perfect for heading into spring, and like a faux waffle knit. The striped top, except for the stripes, is a little outside my comfort zone, with the deep scoop neck and the elastic empire waist. I’m trying to be a little more daring. I know, I know, this is hardly “daring,” but, relatively speaking, from someone who NEVER wears a waistband of any sort, this is sort of a big deal.
I also thought it would be cute for VALENTINE’S DAY!!! Which is today…as well as my blog’s THIRD ANNIVERSARY! Every year I want to do something special to commemorate and every year LIFE gets in the way. Last year I was in California at this time and just couldn’t plan a trip AND a blog party at the same time. The year before that I was stuck in Maine on a work trip and basically feeling like cr*p all the time…and it was as soon as I came back from that trip that I ended up in the hospital, seriously anemic, and found out I had cancer. Good times! This year I THOUGHT of it, but with the sudden move, I just didn’t have the wherewithal to plan anything. HEY FEBRUARY, CUT ME SOME SLACK, WOULD’YA?!?
So, Happy Anniversary to me and FashionSchlub…and Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you.

I really like both your two new tops! I think the ‘waisted’ part of the top is very flattering and it’s not too low at all. I guess you will get loads of use of both your new buys. I hope you are settling in well to your new home. Hope we see some more photos soon. The photo from the other side of the lake was amazing, what a wonderful place to live!

Thanks, Lin – and Happy Valentine’s Day! I wore the two new pieces today for the holiday and was in good compnay at work – almost everyone dressed appropriately for the day. It was nice.
You’ll see more photos of the new place soon, I’m working on a new home update post for next week.

Happy anniversary definitely. I just want you to know you’ve had that blue top since I graduated high school….LOL!!
Those new pieces? They are absolutely perfect. You might need to try more waistbands like that….it’s just fabulous!!
Happy red day Bettye!!!
XOXO

Since you were in high school? Wow, that blue top is REALLY old! Ha ha, sorry, you left that wide open for me 🙂
I’ve always liked an empire waist, but just a sewn-in one, not so much elastic. It feels too maternity-ish to me. And emphasizes the baby belly. When there is no baby 🙂

Happy Valentines and Happy Blog Anniversary!
Love the new outfit. The bright red looks good on you and I think the striped top is flattering. You should NEVER get rid of the blue top.
It’s nice to have something that really ‘means’ something to you.
I have a dark gray wool skirt that my mother bought me. Probably sometime in t he late 1980’s. I love it’s length and warmth and do still wear it. I’ve got to really like something to keep it (that doesn’t happen with many things). But like you, I think of my mother every time I wear this skirt and I remember the exact shopping trip we were on.

That’s nice that you have that skirt from your mother. It is nice to keep a *couple* sentimental things 🙂

That is a very long time! And that red cardigan looks so very good on you, looks fantastic with the color of your hair.
bettyewp
Thanks, Nancy! Looking at the pictures I thought – ooh, a need a red lip. Like a RED LIP.

I adore everything about this outfit! The babydoll looks very nice on you.
I’ve mentioned before that you look wonderful in red, and those sneakers are so cool! I love Converse, and have been considering a pair, but I have size ten feet, and was afraid of resembling Bozo the Clown. And no, the youngsters wouldn’t get that reference but I appreciate that you did! By the way, did you know Converse actually does make clown shoes?
Here’s a linky:

That being said, I intend to try the Converse anyway. I am pretty sure I need a blue pair. Or a green pair. I like the white too.
Now, about old clothing. I have a denim jacket from 1993 I still wear. It’s torn in spots, but people think I did that on purpose. I was considerably thinner in 1993, but it still looks great. I also have a Greenwich Village tee shirt from 1984. When I bought it back then, it was enormous, and I wore it as a nightshirt. Now, I can wear it as a regular tee shirt, sigh. I love your blue shirt, and I love that your Mom got it for you.
bettyewp
Ohmygosh those clown shoes are HYSTERICAL! Yeah, I also like the white (non-clown), but I won’t buy them again at this weight, they’re just too hard for me to get on. I also like the pink. I’d love a pair of red jeans with pink converse.
Does your GV tee say Greenwich Village on it or is that just where you got it? I don’t recall where you live. But a vintage GV slogan tee would be awesome.
Susan Marinelli
I live in Delaware, and yes, it says Greenwich Village on it.
I like the pink Converse too, but can’t justify more than one pair of pink sneakers. Not when they make that awesome blue color!
BTW, I forgot to say, Happy Blogaversary, and Happy VD!
So glad you blog, Bettye, I love reading what you write.
bettyewp
Aww, thanks, Susan – what a sweet thing to say!
Whereabouts in Delaware? Have we had this conversation before? If so, my apologies, I have the memory of a table leg these days.
Susan Marinelli
New Castle, Delaware. On the Delaware River, built in 1651 by Peter Stuyvesant. Sorry, used to be a tour guide…
We can have this conversation as many times as you wish Bettye, I don’t remember anything either. It’s all new to us 😀

I used to live in Newark! I just looked and that’s less than 13 miles from you! Of course, I lived there from age 5 to 8 so doubt we ran into one another. I did not have a large social circle. I know I’ve written about my fondness for Newark here before. Certainly in regard to how I feel my parents ruined my life by bringing me to Long Island from there. Ugh.
Ha ha, jokes are always new to me as I can never remember them. I feel like the only joke (really a riddle) I’ve remembered for my whole life is “what goes ha ha ha ha plop?”
Maureen
First of all, happy 3rd blog anniversary! That’s great news. So kudos! Secondly, your red and striped outfit is smoking! My favorite color is red so I may be biased but I love the comfy and casual look of your outfit. You look beautiful. Lastly, that’s really sweet and I am glad you kept that blue shirt. Your mom would be so happy! I have clothes that are old and would never get rid of too.

Yeah, my mother probably *would* be happy I still have the shirt she got me. I never thought of it that way 🙂

Happy Blog Birthday! Yay! Three years is a long time. And stupid February. At least with all the upheaval it goes by quicker. I think I remember when you were stranded in Maine. Was that when you took a bunch of pics of the snow in the town and ended up having to rent a car to get home? Was that really three years ago? Well, at least you found a great photo shoot location that came with a home to live in. Are your landlords enjoying watching you photograph yourself? And you even have that stone wall for your background. I need to find myself a good photo shoot location when I go house shopping someday!
bettyewp
Maine was 2 years ago, 2017. Yes, lots of snow. Lots and LOTS of snow. It basically never stopped snowing the entire time we were there…and one flight after another, for DAYS just kept being canceled. So finally we rented a car and drove out of Dodge on the one snowy day.
I’m hoping my landlords have NOT seen me photographing myself! AWKWARD. They would have to be looking pretty much straight down from their living room window to see me below cuz I mostly stay pretty close to the house.
Is house shopping in your near future??
Clover
Happy Blogiversary!
That red is lovely on you. I do like the new shirt, though if it doesn’t *feel* good to you, you know, let it go. Or maybe give it another chance. Haha. I don’t know. I think it looks good on you.
I love that you have that old shirt! I have recently let go of many, many older clothes, but I do have a couple of quarter zip (metal zippers, so you know they’re old!) formerly-navy-now-smoky-blue sweatshirts from when my dad owned an Indian motorcycle shop back in the 70’s. I rarely wear them, though my teen daughter sometimes does.
bettyewp
I’m giving the striped shirt another chance. I did wear it yesterday, on actual Valentine’s Day and it was alright.
Oh, those vintage sweatshirts must be awesome!
Daenel T.
I get it about the blue top. I think the oldest thing I own is, or was, a leopard print shirt that my daughter took with her back to college. I bought it when she was about 11. She’s 24 now.
You look fabulous in red.
bettyewp
13 years is a pretty good run!
Isn’t it sort of gratifying when your kids want your clothes? Like, “your old mom is a LITTLE hip, right??”
