Three Things You MUST Have In Your Wardrobe
- Things you love
- Things that are comfortable
- Things that make you feel good when you wear them
Did you think I was going to say that you must have a white tee, a simple black dress and a pair of good denim?? *I* can’t tell YOU what will make your wardrobe work! Only you can do that! No blogger, no capsule wardrobe Pinterest pin, no store knows what your wardrobe requires to work best for you.
Oh, they’re fun to read for sure. There is something so aesthetically pleasing about an all black, white and denim capsule wardrobe diagram. But everyone’s life/day/environment/job/climate/body, etc., is So Different.
We all know that “one size fits all” is NOT a real thing, and I’m not just talking about “size.” An elementary school teacher, a stay-at-home parent, an artist, a dog-walker, someone in a corporate office versus a creative one, a retired person – they all require vastly different wardrobes.
I always get a little irked when I see a post or article titled something along the lines of “This Season’s Must Haves,” or “The Dress You Need This Summer.” You’ve seen them. And they’re fun to look at…and it can be easy to get caught up in it all.
But at the end of the day, if you don’t love the items in your closet, if they’re not comfortable, or you just don’t feel good when you wear them…then that’s not a good wardrobe for you.
I do have a slight “capsule mentality” in that I prefer a smaller, compact wardrobe with most items easily mix-and-matchable. I have HAD tons of clothes in the past, closets and closets (and tubs and garbage bags-ful) and it wasn’t better or easier. I have to come to prefer the feel of fewer, of less (I know, I know, BOX MOUNTAIN, ha ha). That feels best now to ME. Someday the pendulum may swing back, who knows. And that’s okay, too.
Just as it’s okay for us to all have the items WE want. Not what someone else has prescribed for us.
Today’s outfit comprises all three “must-haves.” I love loose-fitting, swingy dresses…and I love linen in summer, even in its most crumpled, wrinkly state. I’m most comfortable in loose clothing and sneakers. And I feel good in all three of these pieces.
I was even a little daring (#tongueincheek) and tied the blouse up at my waist. OOh!
What three things must you have in your wardrobe??
PS – you are witnessing here the return of Sweaty Bettye now that heat and humidity has actually arrived. Things are gonna get ugly.

Now, you know that’s called glowing, and we all look better with our glow on, right? LOL!!
And I ADORE that tied like that!! Seriously. Do I need to say it again? I ADORE that shirt tied like that!!
And you are singing to the choir with your three things. It is different for all of us. If I only had black and white not only would I look terrible because those color drain me, but I’d go stir crazy!!

Ha ha, I KNEW you’d like the tied-up shirt 🙂

I love the tied shirt!

Thanks, Pamela! That’s a bit of boldness on my part 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!

Love this post, Bettye, and so agree with your 3 must haves. For me, that would look like a comfortable knee length knit tank dress, a long slimming cardigan, and an understated and colorful coordinating pendant. Thanks for your thoughtful post!

The dress and cardigan is a fave of mine, too. So easy and comfy! Some interesting pendants are on my wish list.

I totally agree that we all have different wants and needs and that is the beauty of life! How dull would it be if we were all the same all the time. And I also love that our tastes and choices change throughout our lives. Right now my clothes are sort of like my art pencils but there were times that I basically had one uniform to make my life easier. The best part of all this is that we don’t know what we will feel like down the road! It’s a beautiful mystery! I love your look and it is one that we can all replicate but make our own. My must haves are comfy PJs, good sneakers and a jean jacket.
Peace!

” my clothes are sort of like my art pencils” <- LOVE THAT

Love this blue dress……..I may have to find one for myself since I don’t own it yet! I’ve never warmed up to linen, mostly b/c of the wrinkles and the lack of stretch. However, I’m starting to see a cotton/linen knit that doesn’t wrinkle and stretches so I’m giving it a second chance. Love your ferns!

Ha ha, I think of you now whenever I wear blue. Which, in the summer, is a lot!

Hiya Bettye! I’ve just finished reading a weeks worth of your posts, and what nice reading it was! First, I gotta say I adore this outfit, and blue with white is one of my favorite combos. You look great, but Imma say I like the shirt worn open better than tied.
Now, on to the must haves for summer. Hah! That lead-in irks me, and when I see it, my first thought is who the He*l are you to tell me what I need? Like you, I’ve read many of those, but don’t believe them, or follow them, just use them to get fresh ideas. And I am a firm believer in capsule wardrobes. Why I must have ten to twenty capsule wardrobes in my closets at this very moment!
Loving your olive pants and linen shirts. Didn’t care for that Michael Kors bag much.
Stay cool.

You crack me up, Susan 🙂 10-20 capsule wardrobes, indeed! What would the opposite of “capsule” be??
Iris
