Match Made in Seven: Fashion Resolutions
Welcome to the monthly edition of Match Made in Seven! We are an international group of fashion bloggers who meet virtually once a month. One of us chooses a theme each month, and that can be anything: a book, music, a color, a movie. And then we all style an outfit based on that theme.
This month’s theme was chosen by ME (!!!) and is “Fashion Resolutions.” See my post about the theme below…and be sure to take a look at my fellow bloggers to see how they have interpreted the theme this month.

January always starts out strong with new resolutions, plans, and goals. This year I’m even making fashion resolutions.
As I’ve been talking about a lot lately, I want to be a more conscious, responsible shopper. Not buying more than I need, trying to buy ethically and sustainably when I can. I say “when I can” because I often find at least two barriers to entry/purchase:
- Size. While there are some brands making plus size ethical/sustainable clothing, they are very few and far between.
- Price: Ethical/sustainable brands tend to have higher-priced clothing. Again, not all, but that is a general characteristic of these more responsible brands.
Which brings me to the question, how can I be a more responsible shopper even when faced with these obstacles?
- I can shop less. This is a hard one. My body has just reached a point where I can find more clothes to fit AND more brands than ever are producing larger sizes…and I’m really having fun with style. It’s like someone finally letting you into the candy shop, but you still can’t have anything. But…I still need to set some limits cuz…it feels to me like the right thing to do.
- I can shop better. When I can, I can shop second-hand (another challenge for plus size bodies). I can look for more sustainable materials – natural fibers like linen or cotton or responsible man-made ones, like Tencel and Cupro.
- I can stay away from the fastest of the fast fashion stores.
- I can check brands out before buying on GoodOnYou.eco to see their rating.
- I can buy only clothes that I think I will want to keep in my wardrobe for a long time. Things that are well-made and more neutral in style and color, so they blend seamlessly from one year to the next.
- When I really feel the need for a little something extra I can subscribe to a clothing rental service for a month or two, like Nuuly, Rent the Runway, or Gwynnie Bee.
- I can continue to educate myself about these topics, and keep motivated by following bloggers/Instagrammers like:

- Karla Reed

2020 is a new year, a new decade, and I’m ready to try some new things to help make change.
Do you have any fashion or style resolutions for the year?
Thanks for reading and thinking about this!

No…I don’t do resolutions per se, but you have made me feel very guilty for my purchases lately…haha!!
But seriously, I know how these things all start with us, so starting to be more conscious is a great step. Heck, I still haven’t figured out my clean beauty and makeup routine yet…it’s always something!

Oh, boo 🙁 I don’t want anyone feeling guilty…I just want everyone to be aware.

Yes! Great idea and tips (and fun looks, too)!
I tend to boost my wardrobe with post-season clearance shopping. I do tend to donate what I’m not wearing anymore…but generally I keep things until they’re toast and try to send them to places that can at least reuse the materials.

I currently have three pairs of no-longer-wearable pants. They’re ripped/torn/unrepairable (at least by ME) and not even suitable for donation. So I was like WHAT, THEN? And fell asleep two nights ago googling “how to turn old pants into tote bags,” cuz that’s something I could actually USE now that stores are charging for plastic bags and I should really just be limiting plastic use. I need SOME, cuz cat. So I have to find my sewing machine and then I’ll try to whip up some totes for the market.

Now those are some good resolutions! It s good that you make people aware! I want a trenchcoat for spring and decided that I need to shop pre loved for that! It s far more interesting anyway!

I love shopping thrift shops – I just don’t have any really good ones anywhere near me 🙁 I am trying to be more careful in my shopping. Too much in my closet I really don’t like (why did I buy it?) and never wear. I think my resolutions are to not buy as much and be more careful of what I do buy.

Great resolutions!

OK, Bettye, you and Debbie win on this one! I love your thinking on this topic. It’s a challenge to balance sharing fashion ideas on our blogs with being responsible to the planet. And you are so right that you have to spend more for sustainable fashion, but it really is worth it. Thanks for your thinking on this topic.

Thanks, Darlene. Emma had a nice post on shopping better, too 🙂

Oh my goodness, I love this post! Not only do you look fabulous but you’re doing your part by looking for sustainable pieces. I really think that as sustainable brands expand sizes will too. Girlfriend Collective (athletic wear made out of recycled water bottles) just expanded their line to include more sizes.

I’ll have to take a look at Girlfriend Collective, thanks for the heads-up!

This is a wonderful (and different) topic for a fashion challenge and I love it! I’m trying to do better about buying things because it makes me feel good to hunt down and procure something new and pretty. My closet is stuffed and I’ve been digging deeper and thinking that I should be giving more things away (or at least wearing more of what I have). I do have some pieces that are 20+ years old in there and there’s really no reason not to work them into the mix. I did just have to buy two turtleneck shirts because I GAVE MINE AWAY some years back. Who gives away a plain turtleneck shirt? Sheesh. Anyway, I can’t wait to see what the other ladies did and you’ve inspired me!

This is interesting. We are asking the same questions and raising a dilemma. I’m glad as it is quite a quandary. I came to the same conclusions as you. Better and less.

Two thumbs up!

Great job, Bettye! We have some of the same type resolutions and it’s good to know others enjoy thrifting. I do a little of both. I have heard of the clothing rental sites but haven’t given that a try.
bettyewp
The rental sites are fun. Some of them have a one-month free trial, you could give them a try!

I think that being conscious and mindful in regard to what we purchase (and how we live in general) is just an all around great idea and the perfect starting point. xo

Yeah, I’m making some small changes. I got a metal straw to keep with me when I go out to use instead of plastic…I got some reusable ziplock baggies, don’t recall what they’re made of but it was supposed to be good…I’m trying to be better about all the paper we go through at work – re-use what I can, make sure the rest goes to the shredder and the recycling center and not just the regular trash. I don’t bring many bottles or cans into the house, but I’m trying to keep what I do, separate for recycling pick-up days. It’s not a lot, but it’s something. And if we can all do just a little something it could end up being a lot!

These are great resolutions Bettye! It’s difficult to resist the temptation to buy more clothes, especially when those sales emails keep coming through, but every little change helps. I like the GoodOnYou app too – as well as the brand ratings there are some really useful articles. You’ve shared some fabulous outfits in this post – I especially love the teal dress with the rust-coloured cardigan!
