Do the Hokey Pokey
Outside the Box
I love this outfit. I love the plaid with the floral. I love the harmonizing colors. I love the idea of it – shirt knotted at the waist. I love the juxtaposition of “dress” with “casual plaid flannel.”
I wore it last Friday. Grocery shopping, erranding, etc. I felt perfectly comfortable in the style and the actual clothing.
I love pattern mixing. I don’t have a lot of opportunities for it in my wardrobe as I don’t have a lot of prints.
Inside the Box
BUT. I would not wear this to work. I’d wear the dress. I’d wear the shirt. I might even wear the shirt open over the dress, as a jacket (a shacket). But the knotted front? I would not (how badly do you think I wanted to say I would knot??).
This outfit has one foot inside the box, and one foot out (I will not say and shake it all about). So you’re seeing it enjoying possibly its only outing ever, and what a shame because I think it’s a great outfit, but there you have it.
The shoe selection was dictated by “lack of options.” I think I just wrote somewhere about my lack of black flats, but…that’s what I would have preferred with this outfit.
Do you have “in theory” outfits? Outfits that you love in theory but that you struggle to actually wear out in the world?
What I’m Wearing

“Could not, would not in a box”…
It’s a great outfit! Contrasting but harmonious patterns. Very nice! But midriff tied flannel is probably too casual for the office.

This outfit is giving me life. Great post, inspiring me to move beyond my turtleneck and leggings tomorrow!
Cheryl
Very stylish, lovely combination of prints and gorgeous photos!

Love the outfit. It all mismatches perfectly. It suits you and you look happy in it. So I’d say wear it whenever you like wherever you like. Live dangerously and break the mould😊
Michelle
I really like the floral print on that dress! Great print matching.
re: black flats – isn’t it infuriating how what should be the most basic, simplest things to find are often the most impossible? I’ve been without things like a white tee, black pants and a black leather bag for years because I’ve just given up.

I really love this outfit! I struggle with mixing patterns myself, so I especially love posts like this.
I hope you’re well. I’ve read reports that NYC is devastated by the pandemic.

Your hair looks great! Stay well…

I do struggle with that hokey pokey idea many days. Because I want to be more “free” and crazy with my outfits, but I know people look at me and think I’m crazy (and I am crazy…but still). Even on the blog, I know I’m a little out there for many. Then again, I need to be me, right??
However, right now, I feel more subdued…funny how our lives affect our clothing choices too.
I just adore this!!
XOXO

Isn’t it interesting how YOU are feeling more subdued right now, and I’m feeling a little…DEVIL MAY CARE!

This is such a fun and funky look for you! Your true personality radiates from it – almost as great fun as your tutu dress. Keep stepping out of the box when you think no one’s looking and soon there’ll be no box. Stay well and happy. xo karen

Karen I live this, “Keep stepping out of the box when you think no one’s looking and soon there’ll be no box.” What a great way to look at it!

Oh yeah – I have several things in my closet that I will probably never wear. They’re attractive or cute, but much too young for me.
I do love your outfit. I would never mix those patterns, too much ‘ingrained’ from my youth. But, it really looks good and wearing the shirt knotted looks really good on you. Makes you look slimmer.
