Week in Review: Week 229
MONDAY
Work. AT work. Hot. Went to Target afterwards. I still mostly avoid big stores but I needed kitty litter. I finally cancelled my Pretty Litter subscription…well, I canceled it again, I’d renewed right before I went to CA in February so the Landlady/Cat Sitter would have an easier time litter box cleaning…and then the next thing I knew: quarantine, so I left it going so I didn’t have to search for good litter during lock-down.
WOW the blog is scintillating so far this week. How I shopped for kitty litter. Anyway, yeah, Target. It’s been such a long time since I’ve been in a big store with All The Things, that I went a little nuts. I grocery shopped like a teenage boy. Wild abandon, ooh, I want this and this and this and this and this and this and this. Shopping joy. Not checking prices or ingredients, just I WANT IT ALL I’M HAVING IT ALL. It was wonderful.
AND, My Big Day continued into evening…when I TURNED ON THE TV. It’s probably been a month, no lie. And I was sorely disappointed to find NOTHING. Ha. I figured there’d be a bunch of new stuff after a month. I did finally find season 4 of Life in Pieces on Amazon Prime which I like but have always had to watch it “after the fact,” streaming, like a year behind. I like having one or two 30-minute sitcoms (are sitcoms ALWAYS just 30 minutes?? and are dramas EVER only 30 minutes??) so when I just want to have 30 minutes on the sofa before I go to bed…I have something. Anyone have any 30-minute shows they like?
TUESDAY
Well, Tuesday started way more exciting than Monday…when my smoke alarm went off at 2:30 am. I knew there was nothing burning, it’s just ornery that way…and it was really hot in the apartment. Anyway, I COULD NOT GET IT TO STOP SCREAMING. Pushing buttons, trying to twist it open to pull batteries out, LITERALLY put it on the floor and stomped on it…IT. JUST. KEPT. BEEPING. And this was the loud HEY FIREMANS COME PUT OUT THE FIRE screech beeping, not the little “ooh, did you hear that? what was that? is that coming from in here or is at the neighbor’s house?” dainty “your batteries are getting low, please see to this matter, thank you” tiny blip beep. I finally stabbed it and my thumb with a knife, I bled, it stopped beeping. Well worth the trade, I’d say.
Then I had my first “finance” workday. Uhm. No comment. But my feet, legs, back and arm hurt now. Okay, one comment.
Took my car after work for an oil change. You know how long it’s been since I took a car for just an oil change?? I thought it was gonna be $15. Ha ha ha ha ha ha. It was not. But I wanted to just make sure everything was a-ok cuz I’m going on a little mini-road trip this weekend…which you will see a little bit of by the end of this post!
Then my Really Big News – the little farmstand (which is really more of a farm shack, but in a charming ramshackle way) around the corner from home is finally open! Yay! And I stopped and got about THE most beautiful tomato ever! I had some fancy mozzarella at home so I made a very nice tomato and mozzarella salad for dinner and it was delightful. I was too tired to even make it pretty for a picture, I just ate it out of a plastic storage bowl.
This week is really one for the books.
WEDNESDAY
It’s National Hot Dog Day.
Guess what I had for dinner?
Had to go to Faraway Big Shopping Mall to see if smaller sizes of some shoes I’d bought online would be a better fit. Miraculously, they had smaller sizes in both shoes in stock and they were a much better fit and there was no traffic going or returning, even though a high-traffic area right at afternoon commute time. Woohoo! I took that as a sign to quit while I was ahead and took the rest of the evening off and went horizontal on the sofa and watched an entire movie.
THURSDAY
Half-day work from home on my normal work, half-day in office doing finance work. I can barely keep straight where I’m supposed to be or what I’m supposed to be doing on any given day anymore. I have to wake up at different times for the different things and I’m always like “what day is it? do I need to put on underwear?” This is way more disorienting to me than the whole lock-down time.
After an afternoon of standing at the copy machine (this work was not meant for almost-60-year-olds) I had to go the laundromat. The Laundromat. Home of Many People, Many, Many Unknown People…touching all the things…in a warm, enclosed space. I have been putting off going to the laundromat for as long as possible. And when the work building wasn’t full of people working I was able to do a load of laundry when I would come into the building for whatever. But that time has passed. Turns out they’re keeping it to less than 10 people doing laundry at a time…they ask that you wait outside while your wash is in a machine and that you not fold at the tables. So maybe not as bad as I feared. I didn’t notice anything being wiped down after use but they were all busy doing drop-off laundry. I bet they’ve got a lot more of that now.
FRIDAY
Full day at work of my own work. In my own comfy chair.
After work went to the car wash. Getting the car ready for my little trip, whee!
SATURDAY
Trip prep. Erranding. Cleaning. Packing. Tired.
SUNDAY

WOOHOO!!! We’re tripping! Road-tripping, that is. An overnight in Woodstock. More pics and details in an upcoming post. But I’m exhausted and sunburned and had a great day – and there’s more tomorrow!!!
WHAT I’M READING
The Good Girl by Mary Kubica. This was an accidental reread of a book I didn’t like the first time. I kept thinking the cover seemed familiar, the title seemed familiar, but the description didn’t ring a bell, so I started. And stopped. “I’m SURE I’ve read this before.” But couldn’t really recall the story. And started. And stopped. Finally I looked back on my past few years of Goodreads, and yes, I read it in 2017 in Florida, Katie gave it to me to read after she finished it. And then it finally all came back. Not a fan. Not my type of book (thriller-ish), the writing annoyed me. I have details to back-up my unfavorable review but I can’t think of them right now and I’m away from home so can’t flip through the book to find the offending text. No thumbs up from me.
WHAT I’M WATCHING
The High Cost of Living. Another accidental repeat, ha ha, but this time I was glad of the re-watch. I love Zach Braff. This was not his usual clearly likeable, nice guy role. He plays a drug dealer who makes some very bad decisions but s STILL a likeable, nice guy. Two thumbs up.
Okay, I’m exhausted and it’s late. Hope y’all have a good weekend and are ready to start Yet Another Week of This Life.

Thirty minute sitcoms? We like “The Good Place”, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “Kim’s Convenience”.

I UKS still on? I watched the first couple seasons but it fell off the list at some point and I thought it was off the air by this point! Have never seen Kim’s Convenience, will give that a try. I WANTED to like TGP cuz I like Ted Danson and Kristen Bell, but two episodes in I just couldn’t keep going. Sometimes it depends what else is going on in life…as well as what your other tv options are. Right now I’ve pretty much got nuthin, so…these are all worth another try.

Schitts Creek final season has just started here, love it. Your minibreak sounds just lovely.

I watched the first episode a long time ago and did not feel compelled to watch the second. But several have people have said the same, but they pushed through, and by a couple episodes in, they were hooked. I’ll put it on the lkist for after I finish Life in Pieces. I’m only watching tv like once a week at this point so things are lasting a long time!

I cant stop laughing at you saying your bleeding thumb was worth the trade. I would be in a hysterical fit and be angry just because.
Oh and the laundromat…..I know the vibes…
Have a great week!

Ucch. The laundromat. And I have to go back tomorrow! I don’t have AC in my apartment yet, it’s a very damp space, the towels never really dry, so it gets mildewy smelly Very Quickly. At least tomorrow is just one load. Not that that goes that much faster, but it’s fewer machines to touch.

bettye, i had to go look up what Pretty Litter is!
interesting concept!

It definitely had its pros and cons (cons: price, small bits of litter trapped in kitty paws transferred immediately to my bed; pros: long-lasting, good-smelling, easy cleanup). Overall I don’t like the new Fresh Step silica litter as much, it’s about $6/bag cheaper but I don’t know yet if it’s going to last as long, it’s not keeping smells down as well as PL did, it’s definitely slower cleanup…BUT…it keeps tiny, razor-edged kitty litter grains of torture out of my bed. So, there’s that.
Do you have cats?

It’s funny how you take the fact of finding better fitting shoes as a sign to quit shopping. I would be just the opposite. “The shopping fairies are on my side today; let’s see what else I can find!!!”

Oh yeah no, I try to shop with blinders on. Don’t look left or right, only in the direction of what I came for. I can ALWAYS find something I like, want, and would gladly take home with me, and I’m trying to avoid that. So, INOUT is my plan.

Road trip, here you coooooome! (Or here you are, rather.)
Your week leading up sounds like mine- lots of little mundane things, but things we all need to do. My car also needs an oil change (how about that?) but I’m putting it off because I’m really not driving anywhere right now (still working from home). I get it out about once a week for a liquor store run, and that’s about it!
Glad your farmstand is open- now I’m craving a tomato and mozzarella salad! 🙂

Tomato and Mozzarella is a summer meal for me at least three times a week!
Oil changes, ugh. I really only did it cuz I was driving upstate. Last time I went on a road trip with this friend I had car trouble and I did not want a repeat of that! But the car done good (at least til we got back and then one of my rear windows won’t always go up, guh). Probably don’t need so much maintenance just for liquor store runs 😉
