Spring Not Spring: Transitional Style
March 20 officially marked The First Day of Spring but Mother Nature cannot be rushed. She takes her own sweet time when moving from one season into another.
I think we’re always so sick and tired of The Current Season that we’re ready to jump on The New Season as soon as the clock strikes twelve.
Not so fast, my friends. Remember that March is full of lions and lambs. So don’t fall for the old “warm sun on cool skin” trick, Mother Nature would still freeze us out if she could.
Be thoughtful with your clothing choices. I know we’re all dying to jump on some spring fashion trends and to pack that winter coat away. But. Consider the temperature when you’re getting dressed, not just the season.
Here are some ways to add a touch of spring into outfits when it’s still not warm out:
- Light layers are always a good idea during these transitional times. Put a thin turtleneck or tee under that new summery blouse…or a loose knit over a summer dress.
- Wear some brighter colors to feel “springy” even if you can’t put on an easy breezy dress.
- Pull out your white jeans if you’re not an all-year-round white wearer and pair them with a chunky knit from your winter wardrobe. Bonus points if the sweater is in a springy shade..
- Let your ankles peek out with cropped-length pants if you’ve been keeping them covered up all winter.
- Switch from a heavy coat to a blazer.
- Add some fresh spring color with accessories – a pastel-hued bag or fun earrings.
And because Bettye Breaks the Rules, I’m not doing any of these things in today’s pictures! It was too cold! Which is my original point. Don’t be a slave to a date on the calendar. Even though blogs and stores are pushing SPRINGSPRINGSPRINGALLTHESPRING you have to dress according to your actual weather and temperature.

Heck, it was even chilly here today. But I will admit, that getting into spring is much easier in AZ than it was in CO!!!

I love this sweater, such a great “no seriously, forget what the calendar says, we really need to still be wearing wool, people” sweater for those of us who live places (e.g., Minnesota) where the spring of lightweight dresses and bare legs is only vaguely visible in the distance. My primary “getting spring vibes while there’s still snow on the ground” tricks are: (1) COLOR! I start leaning harder into light grey, ivory/cream/white, olive/moss, and pastels. (2) Spring-y patterns. Yep, groundbreaking they may not be, but a floral print does the job. (3) Ankle pants. Fake bare ankle with nude trouser socks/hose instead of darker socks. (4) Change up the shoes. With pants, wear oxfords or loafers instead of ankle boots. (If commuting to a job, this might require wearing snow boots and changing into shoes inside.)

All good tips, Sally!

Love that sweater. It looks warm and comfty. I’m guessing it’ll be awhile before I’m wearing ‘spring’ clothes since I’m still freezing, but hopefully it’ll be here one day.
Grace & Peace, Iris

Yeah, it’s coming 🙂 I’m wearing cropped pants today with bare ankles…and I’m fine. It’s coming.
