Styling Session: Layering Denim Jackets
Denim jacket. Jean jacket. Trucker jacket. All the same thing. And as many names this item has, it has at least as many uses. And styles. And colors!
This timeless item can be worn multiple and makes a great layering piece.
Of course, you can wear it just as a jacket…
Add a hoodie to your bottom layer and wear the denim jacket over that for a grunge or urban look (#16yearoldboyclothes). A hoodie is a perfect partner for a denim jacket because they’re both low-key casual.
Or…
Layer your denim jacket under a longer coat or blazer for a trendy and cool look that will keep you warm until real spring is here. Wear whatever you want the underneath – jeans (for a double denim look), trousers, a skirt or dress. Choose a coat color that will complement the denim of the jacket (though what doesn’t look good with denim??) to make the outfit perfect.
I also love a cropped denim jacket over a summer dress or skirt, but I’ll save that post for the warmer weather. It’s still cool enough here to appreciate these layering ideas.
Please ignore my RBF – ha ha.
How do you like to layer your denim jacket??

I personally like to wear an oversized denim jacket paired with a fleece hoodie – that combo really suits you. Also like wearing denim jackets with a dress in the summer. Btw, loving your hair length – looks really good.

Yeah, I LOVE denim over dresses. I’m not quite there yet as far as baring my legs in these still cool days…but soon 🙂
My hair being good these days is like karma for a lifetime of hair issues 🙂

I love the collarless denim jacket over the hoodie! It’s a great look with a normal collared denim jacket, too, but the clean line at the neckline and the raw edge at the hem are *mwah*. And of course this outfit is perfect with Chucks.

Yeah, I’m a big fan of All Things Collarless. And I LOVE collarless necklines with turtlenecks…and I LOVE turtlenecks…so it’s a match made in heaven.
I keep meaning to do some “research” (for lack of a better term) about why people have such a love/hate relationship with turtlenecks.

All the options you showed looked good. I haven’t tried the one with a larger coat over the denim jacket. I’ll have to see about that one.

This is one of those times when there are just too many layers involved.

How great is it that we all get to choose what we like to wear! Can you managing if we had to live a life where some guiding policy dictated what we could and couldn’t wear? That would be a shame.

I have struggled for years to wear and like my denim jacket. Bought a light wash thinking it would look better with blue jeans. But have really rarely worn it. Last fall I bit the bullet and bought a darker denim jacket and have worn it much more often. What a great piece yours is with its collarless, raw edges. Great color, too. You wear it so well.

Same, Leslie. I own FIVE denim jackets (nothing compared to Jodie, but…), three blue, a cream, and a sage green. None of them has ever been Quite Right to comfortably wear much. I’ve used a couple over the years for photoshoots but as much I loved them theoretically, they just never felt right on me, visually and fit/comfort-wise.
Until now. Just the little bit of weight loss over the past 2 years has made them looser and better able to use for layering. And now I’m reaching for the two blue ones shown in this post a lot. The collared one has actually been on the sell pile for like two years cuz the fit was just weird in the shoulders/back…but it has somehow worked itself out. The cream one is on the sell pile cuz it has no pockets (WHAT ARE PEOPLE THINKING WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT) and the green one is really still too small. Well, it was the last time I tried it, it’s been buried in the sell pile for quite awhile. Hmm. Might warrant an excavation.
I’ve always wanted a really light-wash distressed, thin, very stretchy one that almost feels like a thick chambray. Ooh, I have 6. I do have my actual one from my 20s that I
stoleborrowed from my ex-husband/then boyfriend, but it’s WAYYY small right now cuz I was at my lifetime smallest in my 20s. I should see if Katie wants it, though distressed denim jacket is not really her vibe. I’ll definitely save it somewhere with a notation that it’s for her and that it was her father’s in his 20s. I’ll add it The Katie Letter. The After I Die Katie Letter. But I understand what you’re saying about the dark vs light wash being easier to wear. I think the dark “disappears” a bit whereas the light wash is all HEY LOOK AT ME WEARING A DENIM JACKET LIKE I’M ONE OF THE COOL KIDS.
