The One Where I Ramble

Apologies for boring (and blurry!) pictures today. I am photographerless this week so it was just me and the tripod in the park. I feel bad cuz I really love this outfit and it deserves better than these measley pictures, but…it was these or nothing.

I think that thing over my left shoulder that looks like a piece of truck that was leftover after an accident is art. I’m at an art museum. I enjoy art in theory. I just don’t understand the vast majority of it. I’d like to take a “how to understand art” class. I still haven’t started my first watercolor yet. I don’t really know what to do. I’ve watched gazillions of YouTube videos on beginner watercolor…and it looks so easy. I’m expecting to end up with a soggy piece of brown paper. Art is intimidating.

That’s why I like photography (just not tripod selfies!). There’s a machine that actually Does the Thing. I just need a vague idea of what I want the finished product to be, and the machine actually does the work. It doesn’t matter if I have a shaky hand or my fingers won’t do what my mind is telling them to do. It’s sort of the same with a computer. I can tell a graphics program to make a certain shape or match a color or create a straight line between two points, and it just does it. I’m grateful for machines that can help me create art.

Fashion styling is like art. Combining colors and patterns and shapes and textures and selecting the right looks for different settings and moods. I really loved styling models when I used to shoot for my vintage clothing store on ebay. Here’s some pictures from back in the day…

I’m glad I had that fun, cuz it’s not quite as much fun styling myself! I’m so limited by sizing and budget. With models, it was literally like playing with a life size Barbie. I don’t mean to be condescending, they were all bright, lovely girls – one is working at a nonprofit now, one recently passed the bar, one is associate producer of a magazine. They were just so easy to dress! Anyway, I’m rambling….

I’ve had this floral Bobeau top for three summers now and I love it as much as the day I got it. It’s an easy to wear polyester crepe – and while I usually pass on poly, especially in the summer, this is very lightweight and breathable, and skims so nicely over lumps and bumps. It’s no longer available, but I found some comparable items:

and B Collection by Bobeau Lily Pleated Back Floral Print Tank Top in straight size

The soft oatmeal duster cardigan is the fairer sister to my black Old Navy duster-length cardigan I wear all the time. It’s a very thin, fine knit. Perfect for summertime air conditioned buildings (like my office!). I’m wearing a 2x and they call the color “Palomino.” They are both very versatile items that can be worn all year.

I’m wearing my chestnut espadrilles from Aldo. I got them on clearance at DSW and they’re sold out, but I found these that have sort of the same vibe and are in that same great “goes with everything” chestnut brown tone.

or…

or…

I saw one pair very similar to mine but they were $650 HA HA HA HA HA I wouldn’t do that to you. Trust me, mine were not $650!

Boy, I was all over the place today! I planned to write about something very specific but I got off-track when my pictures weren’t what I hoped and…It Is What It Is!

Lists, Lists, and More Lists

I have a tendency to get locked into routine. I can get a little lazy and I find I do best if certain things (blog posts, for example) are on a schedule. But sometimes I get so locked into that schedule that I miss opportunities. I’ve got this little stockpile of drafts and saved posts and pictures that I want to share with y’all, but I keep not posting them cuz they don’t fit into the Mon/Wed/Fri schedule. And that’s just silly. So I may be throwing some extra posts at you willy nilly,  NOT on schedule, if that’s alright. Oh, I’m living on the edge now, my friends!

Also, I’m a big list maker, I have lists of everything. Things to do, things to make, places to go, things to photograph, movies to see, books to read, and, as you know, clothing to buy. It occurs to me now that maybe you’d be interested in some of my lists even when they’re not in a formal “blog post” format. I’m already making them…why not share them?? So I’m gonna share this “revised shopping list” with you since I was making it anyway for myself…let me know if you like/don’t like this or if you’re interested in any other lists. Some, of course, are local to my area so wouldn’t be of interest to as many of you, but who knows. I don’t know where y’all live or if you’re ever going to visit the Long Island/New York area, so…

Updated Plus Size Spring Shopping List

Since apparently the plus size black and white striped tee is, for me, the rarest of rare sparkle glitter unicorns,  and my clothing cupboard for the warm weather is bare, bare, bare…I am revising my original spring/summer clothing shopping list and looking for some alternatives.

This black and white polka dot blouse could go over my white jeans, medium wash blue jeans, and the black summer-weight pants I’m still looking for (!). It can easily go into the fall as well under a black cardigan. I like that it has the look of a blouse without the potential button gap hell.

I know that polyester in the summer is not the greatest idea, but my office at work is air conditioned to the max from May-October, so I always dress to accommodate the chilly building.

This next one has the more the coloring of a black-stripe-on-white tee. I could wear it to work under the lightweight black cardi or maybe even the light pink silk cardigan…or I could add a real pop of color with turquoise, teal, hot pink, lilac – almost any color…and I can wear it after work or on the weekends (aka out in the Long Island humidity) on its own.

I’m definitely in a polka dot mood today! This navy and white dot top could go over blue or white jeans…or those elusive green pants (I’m like a dog with a bone once I decide there’s something in particular I want). This is perfect for work under a cardigan and on its own after work and on weekends.

Caslon Pleat Front Tank (Plus Size)

This ivory peasant blouse would go over any wash jeans, my tan linen pants (that I just found and didn’t know I still had, score!), and the sage green pants should I ever find them to fit. This is sort of an outlier item as I did not have anything ivory on my list, but  ivory/cream is always a good basic and goes over most any color or type of bottom.

Ahh, a pretty floral blouse! This is just like what I’ve been looking for. I love these colors and it can stand alone over white or blue jeans, or I could put my pale pink cardi over it. I would even try it unbuttoned over a white tee, like a short kimono. Sweet!

Melrose and Market Bell Sleeve Button Back Floral Print Shirt (Plus Size)

These are just some things I saw in a quick online peek. Since I’m having such a tough time rounding out my closet for the warm weather with what I originally wanted, I realize I needed to broaden the search a bit or I was going to be wearing the same outfit every day! I’ll be sure to let you know what I order and how I make out with them!

Have a good rest-of-the-weekend!

Rebirth

fashion schlub bettye rainwater plus size fashion blogger 4.23.18 4

Spring at last! The time has come for light layers and bright springy colors! And on a more philosophical level, a sort of rebirth for me from all the nonsense of last year, illness and treatments and worry…then ridiculous foot pain all winter into the spring…so many things keeping me indoors and inactive and feeling down. There are also some other personal things that are finally reaching resolution this year, so I’m seeing some light at the end of a long dark tunnel. Sorry to be so oh woe is me but it is what it is. But there’s an end in sight – to sprinter (spring + winter) and to me feeling so MEH.

And this outfit is anything but meh. I’ve shared this “bright but dark” top before here and here. You can see how versatile it is in that I’ve worn it with black jeans, medium wash denim, and now white denim. I think the top would also look nice over a white peasant/boho style skirt like this, amiright? How nice would that be for summer evenings on the beach? Oohhhh…summer evenings on the beeeaaacchhhhhh. I can’t wait!!!

It’s still a little chilly early and late in the day and a light jacket is called for, Just in Case. I’m the queen of Just in Case.

This army green jacket is a couple years old from Target’s Ava & Viv plus-size brand. It’s very lightweight Tencel, a sustainable fabric regenerated from wood cellulose. It’s similar in feel to rayon or bamboo, in that it has that same drapey characteristic.

I was never really a white jeans gal but now I feel like they go with just about everything! How do you feel about white jeans?

I’m trying to get away from wearing my plain silver disc earrings Every Single Day, so these little dangly silver and turquoise ones are on frequent rotation. Can’t you just see my hair being a teal blue?? I’m thissssss close.

Thanks to my pal Linda for taking these pictures. We had a nice dinner after. I took a picture of my food and thought of Nancy of Nancy’s Style, who commented recently that it’s not a great idea to read my blog when you’re hungry (mostly my Week in Review posts) cuz I’m always posting pictures of the places we go to eat and the yummy things we have! So I will refrain. This time. Just so she can get ahold of herself 🙂 (GET AHOLD OF YOURSELF, NANCY!!!)
