Yes, Virginia, Denim DOES Go with Everything!

I met up with some girlfriends Sunday for a late lunch (because we hadn’t eaten enough in the city the day before!) and since I didn’t actually wear green on Saturday, I figured I’d give a nod to St. Patrick’s Day and wear this green and navy plaid dress from Old Navy. I typically wear this dress under a black duster-length knit cardigan but that can look a little teacher/librarian-ish, which is fine for work, but…not so much for fun.

So I added The Thing That Can Go Over ALL The Things, a denim jacket, and poof, it’s a look. The mustard gold scarf just brought in a pop of color. I would have preferred to wear white trainers but…I don’t own them yet, so I was back in my off-road flats.

Seriously, what can a denim jacket NOT go over? Pink prom dress, check. Champagne silk slip dress, check. Tulle skirt, jeans with white tee, black leggings and trainers, check check check. Floral sundresses, checked suit trousers, leather mini skirt – I DEFY you to find an outfit that is not darling topped with a denim jacket.

Yeah, I was a little overly optimistic with the bare legs as we’re not quite out of the winter woods yet (note snow on ground. newsflash: more snow tonight and tomorrow. maybe I should trade in my denim jacket for a snowsuit). But I’m a little weary of jeans all day every day for ever and ever and thought a dress would be nice. And reaching my feet to put on tights?? Out of the Question.

Do you have one item in your wardrobe that you feel goes with everything else in your closet??

  1. I can’t think of any outfit that doesn’t work with a jean jacket either. I would have liked you to have linked to all your outfits with your jean jacket when you listed them since I can remember your tulle skirt but don’t remember the others. You are so brave to go bare-legged! Even if the weather is warm enough my legs are so winter white that they wouldn’t know what to do if sun struck them! Enjoy your snow!

    1. “I would have liked you to have linked to all your outfits with your jean jacket when you listed them” Well aren’t YOU a Smarty Smart Smarty!? THAT would have been BRILLIANT. Note to self: Consult with Julia ALWAYS 🙂 Ha. Seriously, who can think of ALL THE THINGS?! Not me with this old tired brain. Sigh.

Yeah, the only thing worse than freezing cold, winter-white legs is PUTTING ON TIGHTS. So. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE tights. I love the way they look, I love the way they feel. I just hate the struggle of getting them ON.

The snow was lovely…didn’t get an actual snow day out of it however, we did two half days instead, an early dismissal one day and a delayed opening the other. Phooey. And even Snow Optimist I, have to think that that was the last real snowfall of the year.

      Are you back in Michigan?

  2. A denim jacket works with everything. Literally EVERY. THING. I also feel like a moto jacket works with basically everything too…it’s just a bit edgier than denim. I love the dress & I hear ya on the bare legs. I don’t think I could hate tights more than I do!

  3. I completely agree. A denim jacket is the perfect topper for virtually anything. I especially love a denim jacket with satin, or tulle- as it is a fun contrast. I love your tartan plaid dress and the addition of the yellow scarf made me smile. I also love the photo of you against that bright green door. Well done !!

    1. Yeah, my favorite is the juxtaposition of feminine against masculine or “fancy” with grunge, etc. I don’t get a lot of opportunity to dress that way because my work, while casual, is a school and I’m in the front office and need to be a little more…traditional. But it’s fun to play dress-up!

    1. I accidentally bought an off-white denim jacket off eBay last year (how does one do that accidentally, I have no idea!) and I feel like bright what would be more wearable. Boo. An unfortunate purchase. But YEAH you should have a blue denim jacket! I see it tying in perfectly with your look!

  4. How funny because we are taking photos today with our denim jackets for the blog in 2 weeks. Do you want to join us on the blog that day? You could send over one of these photos and I’ll introduce you?? (jodie@jtouchofstyle.com)
I love that you titled it this way too. Because one time when I was writing for Sixty + Me, I had a comment that denim jackets were only for teenagers and outside workers. See—she didn’t know anything!!!

    1. Ugh, accidentally deleted (I think? Maybe it posted in its unfinished state) my response to you, but really I need to go comment on your #30wearchallenge post which I enjoyed but then I got called away at work and never got to comment. Anyway, thanks for visiting!
