What Not to Do
My daughter Katie and I went into Brooklyn this past weekend on the hottest day of the year so far – reaching 100 degrees in the afternoon. She’s been wanting to go to Smorgasburg for some time…we tried to go in LA when we were in California in February, but we just couldn’t fit it in…and besides, the Williamsburg, Brooklyn one is the original one, so in my mind that makes it the best. What is Smorgasburg? It’s a big pop-up food festival every weekend during the milder months in NY, and all-year round in other, more temperate, cities.
I thought it would be fun to do a blog photo shoot while we were there…but clearly I didn’t really think about it at all! Shooting in the midday sun on the hottest day of the year, in an extremely crowded location with no shade? Yeah, that seems brilliant. NOT.
I’ve been working on a blog photography post for a future blog, and today’s post could easily be used as the “what not to do” example, ha. But still, we gave it our best shot, for better or worse, so…
Oh, speaking of what not to do…I just created a blog page with things TO do – called “How-To Lessons,” and it’s full of links to blog posts that contain lessons on how to do things like style one dress three ways or how to create a clothing shopping list or how to have a closet filled with only things you love and wear. The page is here https://fashionschlub.com/how-to/ or you can find it anytime on my home page under “How To Lessons.”
Thank goodness for sunglasses!
As I said, it was very crowded, and what was so fun to me, was how many people were clearly shooting their blogs, vlogs or Instagrams! Here these three are setting up their “fruity drink” shot with the city skyline behind. Out here on the Island I rarely see or hear of or run across other bloggers, let alone see them shooting! I wish there was more of a blogging community on the Island like there is in the city and the outer boroughs – it would be so much more fun! Thank goodness for the bloggy friends I’ve made online!
ps – I bet Katie’s shot came out better than theirs!
I know you’re going – crowded? It doesn’t look crowded to me!
Wait for it….
Nice shadows on my face from the sun straight overhead (more “what not to do”).
I thought this would be nice for my 4th of July red, white and blue look but…it’s just not working for me. Plus, as light as it was, an extra layer is not what I needed to be wearing that day. The second we were done shooting I pulled it off.
There’s all sorts of food at Smorgasburg.
My favorite was my pineapple, raspberry, agave juice in a pineapple shell. I think it saved me from heatstroke. Literally. Look how red-faced I am!
The crew seemed pretty happy to be chopping thousands of pineapples all day.
Food puns.
It was very sticky!!! But so yummy.
So, we survived, we had some interesting things to eat, but boy was I happy to get back in my car in the air conditioning afterwards!
Thanks, Katie, for shooting under very difficult conditions – you did a great job!

This is why I love my dresses on the hot days. We were shooting a jeans post a couple of weeks ago when the temperatures had soared, and I was dying!!!
But you look very patriotic and that drink was absolutely lovely!! Who would’ve thought to use the pineapple as the cup?? I love that!!
Happy 4th!!
XOXO

Katie was adorable in a cute little dress and when she got to the apartment in the morning and saw me she was like, “why don’t you wear a dress? it’s so hot!” BUT when it’s really hot and I have to walk a lot, dresses are not good because i sweat so much between my thighs and then they rub together and while I’ve never actually gotten “chub rub” (because I don’t wear dresses when it’s really hot and I have to walk a lot!), it sounds just awful. For work, or evenings out, or sitting on the beach at sunset, oh yeah, lightweight dresses are my jam.
The pineapple was a hard choice! There was also a watermelon drink in a small watermelon shell and maybe coconut water in a coconut shell? But I was feeling so heat woozy and hadn’t eaten much (IT WAS TOO DARN HOT!), the pineapple seemed it would have the most nutritive value of the three.
If I could only find my juicer (unseen since the move, may have accidentally made its way to storage) I would love to start juicing again!
Happy 4th to you, as well. Got fun plans?
Jodie
You would think we would take a day off, right? But no—my slavedriver of myself decided since we would all be together for a little bbq, that we should take photos too…..what was i thinking??
XOXO
ps…I’ve read about shorts for that chub rub….have you tried any?? I bet if they were silky (like a slip) they might not be too hot?? You should research it for the blog?
Fashion Schlub
Yeah, I always read about the chub rub bands on the plus girls’ sites and it’s just never appealed to me. It wouldn’t stop the sweating and that’s, while not painful, extremely annoying. Plus it’s just One More Thing! I want to put on LESS things, ha! I know I’m being ornery and closed-minded 🙂 If I come across them maybe I’ll give them a try, thanks!

Yep, I haven’t worn a pair of pants all month long! Yesterday, it was 105 degrees here. Thank God today is only 90 degrees! I am right down the turnpike from you, Ms. Schlub, and I am also the same size as you, in jeans and tops. If you tell me you wear a size ten shoe, Imma think you’re my doppleganger! Anyway, love your Fourth outfit. Have a very happy Fourth!
Fashion Schlub
Well, ten was never my size before, but it’s now the first size I try as it’s most likely to accommodate my puffy feet and arch-support inserts, so…twins separated at birth, are we??
Happy 4th to you, too!

Alright I’ve done that so many times! Big idea, failure to execute! Your first picture looked fine. Yes, the heatstroke ones were worrying. I’m a sweater so I would have pit stains and rivulets running down my forehead and plastered hair to my face. But honestly they are not that bad. You look a little red, big deal. I bet we wouldn’t have even noticed it if you hadn’t pointed it out. Well, you’re home in AC now right? In a version of a nightgown right? Sounds perfect!
Fashion Schlub
I’m a sweater, everywhere EXCEPT under my arms. But my face, scalp, boobs, between thighs, major sweat. The photos by the river were taken as soon as we got there so I wasn’t too bad yet…and the pictures with the pineapple were post-shade-sit-break-and-tissue-mop-up, ha. I am in the nightgown dress today cuz I ran out this morning for a bagel…and may go out later to sit under a sunset. And yep, AIR CONDITIONING 🙂

I’m surprise you didn’t faint in that heatwave wearing jeans! The place looks like where we were in Brooklyn at a flea market when I met Bill Murray.

Am I right?
I ❤️ Brooklyn!

My Dear Schlub: Since we are twins (in size, and sweat volume), allow me to offer some hints on dealing with summer hell. First, screw the tissues, bring a hand towel!. Preferably one that matches your outfit. If it’s cute enough, tie it around your wrist, so you don’t have to carry it, and can wipe your forehead, without searching for the towel. I possess the world’s sweatiest head, and by the time I walk five feet, all of my hair is soaking wet, and dripping into my eyes. I have an enormous collection of hand towels. Second, invest in a pair of Bermuda shorts, or at the very least, loose fitting capri pants. I adore skinny jeans, and they look great on you. But my skinnies see NO action from June thru September, because they don’t allow any air flow at all. Third, it is amazing how much cooler your whole body gets when you wear sandals. Birkenstock has starrted making some cute ones, and they give me good arch support, but there are a boatload of brands that offer decent arch support, and are probably cheaper. I own a decent sneaker collection, but they too, see little action during the summer, unless I am working. Fourth, (let me apologize in advance for the indelicacy of this suggestion) I also apply deodorant underneath my girls, and in the folds of my backfat. I would apply it to my head, but it drips into my eyes when my head sweats. That being said, you looked great, and I am sorry you had to suffer for your art.
Now I MUST KNOW: what was in that East Coast Poke? It looks delightful!
Fashion Schlub
Thanks for all the great suggestions!
The poke bowl was Katie’s choice and it was tuna, salmon, rice and seaweed salad with…ginger dressing? I just had a couple bites, I was longing for a refreshing beverage!

The hot summer sun makes shooting outside SO difficult! And what seems to be pretty light turns out wayyyy too harsh when you try to shoot in it, I have totally been there!
Glad you guys had fun at the festival- despite that crazy heat!

Yup, it’s all about the light.

Yeah, the heat just came out of nowhere! Most of the week had been pretty pleasant, not too hot then BAM. I’m not a big sun person anyway, and I RARELY go out in the middle of the day like that in the summertime, but…Katie 🙂 She was only here a short time and this was the opportunity we had to go, so.
MissKymmiee
Am sure you had an absolute fun and the pictures are Amaze!! But the heat must have been a pain. Cheers 💕
Fashion Schlub
Thanks! Yes, heat, boo. It’s toned back down to a reasonable level for you…but it’s only the beginning of July, I’m sure we have much more ahead. I just will try to not plan photo shoots for those days!

What a fun day that had to be even with the heat! All the fun food and drinks looks so amazing. I have been to the food truck festivals in Phoenix a couple of times and am always in heaven. I fancy myself running one at times but then get realistic about the work involved. Ha ha. I love your kimono! I am so on the kimono bandwagon this summer. Have a great weekend!

I have no dreams of *running* a food truck, I just like visiting them! They always seem to have more interesting options than restaurants!

Wish I had one of those yummy pineapple drinks right now! It was almost as hot today!
