Fall Wardrobe Wish List Part 1: Clothing
I’ve done an assessment of my fall wardrobe and I’ve decided there are a couple (alright, more than a couple) things that would round it out.
I feel I’m heavy on “solid on solid” looks – solid colored dress or top under a solid color cardigan. That is feeling a little boring to me right now. So, a couple patterned scarves to break up dress outfits and a couple top and jean combos…but also a few patterned tops. No, not more stripes! I’m looking at florals and plaids. These are some I’m considering and have saved in my ShopTagr to be notified when they go on sale.
Modcloth Hosting for the Weekend Tunic, sizes xs-4x. I think this would look nice on its own or under my rust or olive duster cardigans with white or blue denim
Modcloth Compania Fantastica Hey, Wildflower blouse in sizes xs-4x. I could wear this under the black cardi, olive green or the golden yellow one. Over blue, black and white denim.
Old Navy Classic Plus Size Drapey Flannel Blouse. Alright, a year after Pantone named lilac the Color of the Year, I’m ready to give it a try. I think I’d love this with the golden yellow cardi…or the grey cardigan I don’t own (ha ha). I could even wear it with the navy cardigan that was a mistake but at least this would give it a purpose in life.
I’ve been missing a medium grey “cozy” cardigan since my Old Navy boyfriend cardigan went missing a few years ago, so I’d like to replace that. It will go nicely over stripes and black or white tops. And that lilac plaid blouse above 🙂 But there are no pictures of grey cardigans I’m considering because there are no grey cardigans I’m considering. Which is why I haven’t had one in several years. They’re all too light, too dark, too long, too short, drapey, waterfall, cascading, sharkbite, puffy sleeves, bell sleeves, pearled pockets, shawl collar, hooded, cable stitched, rib knit, studded collar, zip-front, marled, space-dyed, thin, pointelle, chenille OH MY GOD. I just want a PLAIN medium to darkish grey, cozy, pocketed cardigan. Like something your grandfather or boyfriend wore 10 years ago and will still be wearing 10 years from now. I finally saw ONE. It was $659. Sigh. The search continues. I think I will die with this sweater on my wish list.
I’ve had most of my fall/winter dresses for quite a few years, yawn. It might be nice to have a new dress or two, and I’d kind of like at least one to be something outside my normal “solid color swing dress” wheelhouse.
Only Carmakoma Curvy Denim Dress. I know! I know! Another denim dress! But this is a cold weather dress. All my others are warm weather. That makes it a completely different thing. And I feel like I would wear something like this A Ton. It’s 100% Lyocell (Tencel), my fave, and has that droopy smock-type waist that I’m so comfortable (Sorry, Stacey London) in.
ASOS CURVE Smock Shirt Mini Dress with long sleeves. Another smock type dress, would get lots of wear with tights, booties and a cardigan. Not exactly jumping out of my comfort zone here but I wouldn’t want to be rash.
I usually steer clear of these low-priced over-seas outlets but this print and color are calling my name so hard…and I can totally see it in the fall over a long-sleeved cream-colored thermal knit top with brown lace-up ankle boots.
Printed Baggy Pockets Sleeveless Summer Dresses
How cute would this dress be with my grey cardigan??? Ahem. Modcloth Cozy Plaid Sweater Dress
Over the years my supply of knock around long sleeved tops has dwindled, due to shrinkage, stainage, you name it. Things to wear on the weekends when I go on outings with the girls.
BP Dolman Sleeve Ribbed Sweater I’m definitely craving some warm autumnal colors to mix with my current black white grey palette.
Sanctuary Sienna Mix Top (which I keep reading as “mix tape”)
I haven’t tried my black jeans that I’ve had for a couple years now. I’m afraid. I may need to replace them if I can’t get into them anymore. They were tight last year. I do like skinny jeans for the winter to go with ankle booties, but I’m not going to faff around too much searching for a pair before I just go with my old favorite Gloria Vanderbilt Amanda jeans. I’m starting a new trend of #nontrendyjeans or is #nontrendyisthenewtrendy better??
And this is on my list every season and it just never happens – a pair (or two) of patterned non-denim pants. We’ll see how it goes this year.
Old Navy Mid-Rise Secret-Slim Pockets Plus-Size Pixie Ankle Pants (I believe Old Navy has been working with Starbucks on their product names: “I’d like a triple venti half-sweet non-fat caramel macchiato and a pair of 22 short mid-rise secret-slim pockets plus-size floral pixie ankle pants, please.”) But I digress. How cute are these?!? I’m picturing them with a black and white striped tee and golden yellow cardigan. Or a white tee and denim jacket. Or…the options are endless.
Or these…not as flamboyant, but definitely a step outside my usual wardrobe box.
Same pants as above just in a different pattern: Old Navy Mid-Rise Secret-Slim Pockets Plus-Size Pixie Ankle Pants. You maybe can’t tell from this picture, but the black and white plaid has a lilac stripe running through it. Again with the lilac! Again, I’m seeing any number of different tees – black and white stripe, black and while polka dot, white – under the golden yellow cardi or black cardi. MAYBE even the lilac plaid flannel shirt above with the black cardi. Or the black pullover tunic. So many different outfits!
A raincoat! I could really use two – a casual one to wear with jeans on the weekends, and a dressier, longer one for work.
J. Crew Perfect Rain Jacket – Did you know that J. Crew now carries some items up to a size 24??
And why am I so drawn to raincoats without hoods?? It doesn’t make sense! I just don’t like hoods. I like the look of this coat, but it would really be more like a cool season jacket than a raincoat.
I may just bypass the whole “raincoat” issue altogether and get a poncho that I can throw over my regular jacket. Does anyone else do this? How’s that working for ya??
Zip-up Waterproof Poncho
And a cold weather, not dress-up, coat – like a warm parka type of thing. THAT GUY bought me my last coat several years ago so I haven’t wanted to replace it. But it’s dingy now and orange and…it’s time. LET’ER GO.
Lands End Women’s Plus Size Lightweight Primaloft Coat. Do I love it? No. It’s the updated version of what I’ve had – very warm, down-alternative filling, very lightweight, non-puffy, pockets, no hood, blah blah blah. Serviceable. It also comes in black and red. I get bored so quickly looking at coats. They all look alike and I don’t really love any of them. Maybe I’ll wear the orange one for one more year. Maybe next year there will be a Coat Revolution. Maybe I’ll find something secondhand on ebay or Poshmark so I don’t have to spend so much on something I don’t even like.
I know this seems like a lot of things. But here’s the thing: while I always have a lot of things on The Wish List, most things I never find, or I just find one when I wanted three, etc. I’ll spend the whole cold weather season hunting these things down and give up around April, when I just say “I’ll pick up the search again next fall.” That is why I haven’t had a raincoat for so many years…20? More?
Also, this is just the clothing list. There’s also a “Shoes & Accessories” list, but that’s for next week. Sorry this got So Long!

I have three raincoats, that I never wear. I bought them instead of what I really wanted, which was a classic trench. Without a hood. If it’s raining that hard, I wear my plaid rain hat. I love all the dresses you picked, but the printed one is adorable, and would look great with your yellow cardigan. Stacey London notwithstanding. And I have a pink/blue/lilac flannel shirt that I wear all the time, and it goes with everything. I noticed your list contains NO red, and think you might want to consider that color. You look great in bright colors.

Red. I’ve had red phases in my life. But mostly (now) I just like it in Very Small Doses. Like I must have spent 2 hours this weekend looking for a scarf I saw around the internet last year, leopard print with a red border – not wine, not cherry, not pink, RED. I really want that to go with my camel cardigan. I just want a LITTLE red. End of story: I couldn’t find the scarf. I have like 10 runners-up saved on PoshMark but…I’ll hold out a little longer to see if I can just find the exact thing I want.
Three raincoats and none were what you really wanted? See, I hate that! Ugh. I’ve wanted a trench for a long time, too….but a really really simple one, single-breasted, small collar, NO HOOD – ha ha.
Where do you keep your rain hat? At home or in the car? I never know where the best place is to keep my umbrella.

Did you see the rain ponchos we had on our Alaska trip on my Sept month post?? Now that’s the one you need. I have to admit they were easy and fit over everything!!
You crack me up over the grey cardigan…..I didn’t even realize there were so many varieties. Maybe you need more than one??
And yay for prints. I could never understand the idea of staying away from them. They hide so much …like stains and lumps!!

I remember seeing rain ponchos but didn’t have raincoat on my radar right then. I’ll have to go back and look again.
SO many varieties of grey cardigan. I don’t want more than one. I just want THE ONE (sorta like A Man, sigh).
Prints definitely do hide bumps! And stains, ha!

Great list – at least you’re organized and know what you need. I keep saying I’m going to do that – have even saved one of your previous posts on that topic to read in depth. Alas, life has gotten in the way and I haven’t touched it. And, it’s still pretty warm in Alabama, so not much motivation there either. Love the top in the first picture, and as always the Gloria Vanderbilt jeans. Hope you find that grey sweater 🙂

I wonder if the hyper-organization helps feed me when the frustration of not being able to FIND anything sets in. Much easier to find online than in my size…and harder yet to find something that fits! But I do enjoy the organization and planning of it. I feel so In Control 🙂

I am loving your picks, lady- especially those chic glen plaid trousers! SO many ways to wear!

Let’s see if I have the courage to wear them!

I am so like you when it comes to finding pants with prints. I think I like the idea and then when I put them on I feel like a clown. Even small print. Or I realize I just won’t wear them as much as I would solid colors. And I second your coat search dilemna. After size 8 the coats are really like tents. No one has taken a creative look at how beautiful our silhouettes would look in a coat that was made for us! Anyone in fashion listening? There is your niche right there!

Phooey on large size outerwear. Just PHOOEY. And yeah, that’s probably exactly what will happen if I get the printed pants…they might be cute but I’ll be like BUT I’M NOT WEARING THEM OUTSIDE!!! Ha.
Nancy
Oh yes, that denim dress! And cardigans, lots of cardigans. Because I’m always cold……but not at night….hot flashes etc
Fashion Schlub
Sadly that denim dress is sold out of my size, but I’m still watching it just in case. It’s SO me! No more hot flashes for me! Not that I ever had them, but…no more lady bits guarantees I never will! At least I hope it does 🙂

You crack me up! But I know exactly how you feel about finding THE sweater. Once I have something like that in my mind, nothing else will do. Good luck in your search. Off to go look for some printed pants.

I’ve been told I’m TOO PICKY but…I work hard to make the money to buy things, I feel like I should hold out til I can get what I want!
