Week in Review: Week 154
A little calmer this week…I didn’t put anymore effort into unpacking cuz I was pooped and needed a break. But I’m continuing to enjoy the way the light spreads in the afternoon…
I tried to look at a used sofa that was reasonably priced and not too far away but the seller never gave me his actual address 🙁 so that was a disappointment. I’m only looking at used sofas as I can afford a better quality that way. But I’m very particular and my sofa has a list of must-haves:
- in the 71-77″ range
- not “overstuffed”
- preferably a cushionless back (like the one below)
- non-notched-out cushions
- mid-tone color – not too dark or too light – though I’m sort of open on colors – as long as it’s solid
- substantial legs – nothing too spindly
- “just the right height” arms
- not too deep a seat
- straight lines vs. curves
Uhm, that might be it. Ha ha. For $100. Good luck, Bettye! Anyway, that’s why I was disappointed when this one slipped away.
Ooh, Tuesday was unfortunate weather. It was a snowy, sleety day but the bad weather started too late in the morning for us to get a snow day. That made for a long, slow, stressful drive home from work in the afternoon. And THEN…I couldn’t get up my driveway! It’s quite steep at the bottom, and curved…and you’re coming off a curved incline from the road…which all made for the perfect storm of getting stuck repeatedly about a third of the way up. I get REALLY NERVOUS when driving in slippery conditions, and I always have little, light cars that are prone to slipping…so this was, at the risk of being even more dramatic than usual, quite HARROWING.
In the end, after repeated tries and being CERTAIN someone was going to plow into me as I backed out onto the curved snowy road below, I gave up and managed to get the car onto a side street across from my driveway (you can’t park on my street, it’s too narrow and winding) and I just walked home up the hill. Ugh. Later that evening when Mr. Landlord got home he shoveled and salted but I still was afraid to try again and get stuck on the road…and finally he offered to go get the car for me. I am woman, hear me whimper 🙁
I got a Valentine from my wonderful niece Annabelle. Other than that, Valentine’s Day was a non-issue. I do miss holidays. I miss doing holidays WITH someone. A guy, a friend, a kid, a dog. Yeah, Valentine’s Day was a little sad this year. Moving on.
Many of you that read my blog also know Jodie from Jodie’s Touch of Style, either through her blog itself or from her comments here. She is truly a genuinely NICE person and shares SO much useful information on her blog. She’s applied to be a Sephora influencer and they ask for testimonials from friends, fans, followers – so if you haven’t already, maybe you could take just a couple minutes today and write up something for her?? It’s easy-peasy and right here.
Friday I got my taxes done. I’ve been so worried about this ever since I knew I would be moving, and as it turned out I spent all my meager savings on getting into the new apartment. I’ve owed every year since I sold my house and Katie’s student loans were paid off…so I was really anxious about where the money was going to come from this year. And miracle of miracles…not only did I not OWE this year…I am getting a REFUND!!! Ironically, it helped that I made hardly any additional money from side hustles (blogging, photography, ebay, etc)…and there was a change in some tax credit that helped me a bit. So soon I will have a small $ cushion again, which is a relief. Thank you, Universe 🙂
I finally got to have A Fun Day Out yesterday, it seems like it’s been a Really Long Time since I had FUN. We went into Brooklyn to a single exhibit gallery, it was really cool and we had fun walking through the maze of light walls, sort of like the Mirror Maze at the amusement park, taking pictures, etc.
Then we walked down the block where there were so many good food options we could barely choose – but we ended up in a cute, WARM place with an excellent menu. One friend and I split an avocado, fried egg, bacon, cheddar, red onion and tomato burger with candied apple and whipped vanilla cream challah bread french toast for dessert. I couldn’t quite identify why, but the french fries were fantastic. A seasoned oil, maybe? Whatever, it was all delicious and charming.
And walking through Brooklyn is always entertaining.
And now, I am officially ON VACATION. It seems like I just HAD vacation, but life has been so chaotic since Christmas that I REALLY need a break again. I don’t know how people do it who only have 1-2 weeks of vacation a year. I feel for you, I really do.
I’ll leave you with a little visit with Miss Jayne, who is finally seeming more settled.
Hope everyone has a good week!
Nancy
Enjoy your vacation dear Bettye. I hope it will be a relaxed one!

Me, too! Thanks, Nancy!

Oh my, glad your landlord was there to get your car up the driveway.
Hope your vacation week is a good one.

Now I’m going to dread snowy days 🙁 Really, the problem was that we didn’t get a snow day. On a day like that when roads are bad, the children should not be on school buses and *I* should not be out slipping on the driveway! At the old apartment, it was hard getting up the long steep hill to the area where the house was, but once I made it up there, the driveway was short and level (and I got to keep my car in the garage, which was a pleasure!). Here, the road is curved and inclined…and the driveway is STEEP and curved. Well, we’re close to the end of winter, maybe that’s the last of it for the year.
Already enjoying the low bar I have set for myself this vacation.
Debbie from Illinois
Yay for vacation!!! 😀❤️😁 Hope you have a good week.
We are snowed in again. Yuck!
bettyewp
Everyone else is getting our snow! Feel free to send it my way.

Thanks for reminding me about Jodie’s application. I just wrote a very convincing testimonial I believe! So, where you live now, are you within walking distance of good restaurants or was it on our field trip into Brooklyn? It actually looks like you’re tucked back into a woodsy neighborhood so that is what is throwing me off. Do you have a list for this vacation? I think it’s always interesting to hear your list (both fun and chores) and see how you did tackling it.
bettyewp
Okay, hate to make you wait for answers to your questions (I know, my life is Just. So. Exciting.), but your comment prompted two blog posts – one you’ll see this Thursday (how will you ever wait) and the other will be NEXT week (oh my GAWD!!!). But the short answer to the one is no, I live within walking distance of NOTHING. There’s a tiny strip mall about half a mile down the road with a nail salon, pizza place, bakery and bar/restaurant, but the road is windy and hilly with a very narrow shoulder, really not conducive to walking at all. If I want to walk, I need to drive somewhere to do it. Like the day I posted the pictures of the pond and “I Live Here,” I drove about a quarter mile to a church, parked in their lot, and walked from there. This past Saturday I was in Brooklyn. That’s where the gallery and restaurants and street art were. And yes, of COURSE I have a list for this vacation, but you’ll have to waiiiiitttt FOR IT!
Glad you left Jodie a testimonial!

OMG, Bettye. Talk about genuinely nice….I am SO honored you posted about my Sephora application. I am such a small fish compared to others I’ve seen applying. And I’m old. But I told myself that I should reach for the stars…so that’s why I applied!
You do need a vacation. Moving is the craziest thing to do, and then to get stuck in the snow like that. I’m like you. I’m a wimp when it comes to snow driving. Of course the car makes all the difference, but still.
I did laugh at your requirements for the couch. You don’t want much, do you?? But maybe that tax refund could up the ante?? I was SO happy that the refund is one less stress on you. You need more good news like that!! I’m glad you got out for a little fun too.
And on a totally different note….those fairy lights around your door in that last photo? If that isn’t perfection, I don’t know what is??
XOXO

We all need to reach for the stars, Jodie! And we all should be giving our friends a boost up there when we can!
Yeah, for some reason, sofas are high on my “particular” radar. I have a lower bar for tables, chairs, etc. Maybe cuz I’ve had so many BAD sofas…and I just came off a really uncomfortable one at the last apartment. In all my years of home ownership/renting I’ve only bought two sofas, the rest were hand-me-downs and not my taste or comfort level.
We do have our big fundraising gala at the end of March and I’ll get some overtime out of that – and that will be my sofa money. The tax refund is going into savings, untouched. I’ve lived too long with little financial cushion – I JUST started getting past that about 18 months ago and was able to start saving AND “living.” It was SO COMFORTING to know I had a little extra money in case the car broke down or I had to emergency travel or I got sick again or Katie needed something or whatever. With the higher rent at this new apartment my ability to save as quickly as I had been is greatly curtailed. So the tax refund is a real gift.
Re: fairy lights – be sure to read tomorrow’s post!

I popped on over to do a testimonial for Jodie! I hadn’t seen her post about it yet so thanks for the heads up. Jodie was my partner in the original Fierce 50 campaign. You’ve done another wonderful post today. I love to read your blog for several reasons. One is you have a quietness about you (sounds wacky sorry), but when I read your posts I get very relaxed. Two even without pictures I can see what you are talking about. I can see very clearly. Three when I do see your pictures I am delighted because they are so beautiful and they say so much. You really make a picture say a thousand words. Nobody knows what lies behind the authors of blogs and some like myself just can’t express anything too deep but you say things that touch a cord. So I’m a big fan!
Peace!
Cheryl

So glad you added your testimonial to Jodie’s Sephora application, Cheryl! I think she’d be a great asset.
And what SWEET comments you left me! I had to stop and give Miss Jayne a hug just so I didn’t get all teary! It’s always such a kindness when someone shares that you’ve touched their heart in some way, so thank you for your words this morning.
xoxo
CiM
Cheryl, you hit the nail on the head. I’m so glad you wrote this.
Quietness, yes – I get that. Bettye’s posts make me very relaxed, too. Your words struck me. I thought, “She’s right about how it feels, reading here.”
What you said about seeing what she’s talking about, even without pictures – yes. That, too. And loving the winsome pictures, which are beautiful and say so much. Yes, yes, and yes.
I agree. You pulled it all together. These are some of the many reasons I love to read Bettye’s blog!
Last but not least – commenters. Every commenter I “see” here is someone – I can tell – I’d like if I met them. This isn’t true everywhere on the internet! I wonder if you have to do a lot of filtering to keep unfriendly commenters out…? Or if you only attract friendly, kind, interesting people? Well, whatever you’re doing, it works.
Good job, Bettye. 🙂 And Cheryl! 🙂
bettyewp
Aww, thanks, CiM! And I have to agree, I have THE. BEST. FOLLOWERS/COMMENTERS. It DOES feel like a family here to me.
I use a spam blocker that keeps the ridiculous bot comments out…but I’ve really never had anyone say anything that was really BAD – there was someone awhile back who commented negatively on my eating habits and weight from a health perspective, but she didn’t do it in a nasty way and I get where she was coming from, but…I’m really the only one who can do that.
I’m so grateful I have wonderful people who keep coming back to read and participate – it feels really good 🙂

Glad to see Miss Janey looking a bit more relaxed than she was, and hope that relaxation transfers to you this week, Miss Vacation. You certainly deserve a great week, after all the hubbub. Like Jodie, I love the door with the fairy lights. Actually I love anything with fairy lights.
About VD. I have always heartily hated VD, with boyfriend or without. I do however, adore when the candy goes on sale the next day. The only people who know how to do VD correctly are the babies, who trade little cards they fill out themselves, and eat as much candy as possible. It’s inclusive, it’s fun, and you don’t need a damn reservation.
Every time I see Frida Kahlo, I just want to pluck her.
bettyewp
Miss Relaxed Janey has been doing wind sprints from one end of the apartment to the other this morning, my favorite part being when she flies through the air into the living room instead of taking the steps.
So funny that several of you have mentioned the fairy lights as I harshly malign them in tomorrow’s post. I am a fickle creature.
“Every time I see Frida Kahlo, I just want to pluck her.” RIGHT????
