Animal Motifs Through History: Match Made in Seven
Well, MY history 🙂
Welcome to the monthly edition of Match Made in Seven! We are an international group of fashion bloggers who meet virtually once a month. One of us chooses a theme each month, and that can be anything: a book, music, a color, a movie. And then we all style an outfit based on that theme.
This month’s theme was chosen by Emma of Style Splash and is “Animal Motif.” See my post about the theme below…and be sure to take a look at my fellow bloggers to see how they have interpreted the theme this month.

Rather than showing one outfit today with an animal motif, I thought I’d go back through the FashionSchlub archives and share all the animals I’ve worn over the past four years. Don’t worry, there’s not that many!
Technically, an animal motif is a depiction of an animal in design. Like a lion-head door-knocker…or a French Bulldog graphic tee…or a bird wallpaper…or a ring in the shape of a turtle.
So, in no particular order, I give you Animal Motifs Through (my) History.
The Penguin Dress
I thought this dress was So Fun. And I wore it all year-round: in the summer on its own as a sleeveless dress or under a light cardi…and in the winter as a jumper over a blouse. You saw this look here. There are also a bunch of helpful pattern mixing tips there.
From a distance the dress can just look like a graphic pattern of pink, black and white. But they are definitely penguins!
The Tiger Skirt
Really, what else is there to say? Tiger skirt rocked (you might have seen it here). That was a very adventurous style year for me. Gwynnie Bee was still new to me and I was trying All the Things!
The Butterfly Dress
A look that pre-dated the blog, but was worn on my “30 days of No Repeat Outfits” challenge in 2015. Yet another Gwynnie Bee find.
The Butterfly Shirt
Not my proudest fashion moment. I bought the shirt because it FIT. Those baggy stretchy pants? There Are No Words. And if I remember correctly, the shoes were some sort of grey suede mocassin things. Overall SCHLUB. Ha. BUT…butterflies.
And of course, no list of mine is complete without the Junarose dress, which is actually…
The Bird Dress
It may just look like a pastel abstract mish-mosh but there are actually birds in there. Mostly feathers, but a couple birds. You might have seen this here.
Here are some other cute animal motif items:

Beautiful interpretation of our challenge, Bettye! I especially love anything with butterflies so those pieces caught my attention right away! Fun challenge this month, wasn’t it?

It was funny I had two butterfly items at the same time, I feel like I don’t see a lot of butterflies on clothing!
Darlene
Bettye, I always enjoy your unique interpretations! The penguin outfit, tiger skirt, butterfly top and dress and that adorable bird dress are such wonderful examples of animal motif! I, too, did an archive dive but all of my pieces are from the jungle and the savannah!! Lol!
Well done, as usual, my blogging friend,
xx Darlene

Thanks, Darlene. I’ve been so swamped I haven’t even gotten around to everyone else’s animals yet! I look forward to seeing what everyone else did.

Penguin dress is my favorite! Surprisingly adaptable!
Butterfly dress is my close second. Do you still have it? I love animals on clothes and on my lap and on my lawn. Now to settle in with a couple on my couch!

No, Butterfly Dress was from Gwynnie Bee, so I wore it once then returned it.
Iris
Enjoyed all the animals – think I might have one leopard print vest in my closet but that would be it. As always love the “bird dress”.

Ha, thanks, Tina! I did love that penguin dress. But it was so distinctive, I grew tired out of it pretty quickly and only had it about a year before I sold it on swap.com.
