In lieu of a Workday Wardrobe post this week, since there was no workday wardrobe…I thought I’d share my experience with my second Nordstrom Trunk Club trunk.

Nordstrom Trunk Club is a subscription styling service through, you guessed it, Nordstrom. There is a $20 per trunk styling fee, unless you have a Nordstrom credit card, in which case the fee is waived, woohoo! You can set “trunks” to come at whatever intervals you want, monthly, bimonthly, etc. When you sign up you fill out a questionnaire about your clothing likes and dislikes, what sorts of things you’re looking for, and they send you some “this or that” picture options of outfits. That was fun (easily amused).

Your stylist takes all this information and puts together a collection of 10(ish?) items that you can see, and you either accept delivery of every item, or ask to swap some things out before sending. Over time, through trial and error, your stylist should get a good feel for what you like, need, and will fit.

Then your “trunk” arrives. And it is a BIG box. Like a little steamer trunk. There’s a menu of the items in the box, along with their prices and styling ideas on how to combine some of the pieces.

You try them on, keep (and pay for) what you like, and send back the rest within five days, with a prepaid UPS label. OR you send it all back if you don’t want anything. I sent everything in my first box back…but I did keep one item from my second box, which I’m going to share with you here.

I started out on a monthly schedule because I was so excited about it, but I’m going to go bi-monthly after my January box.

SO, here’s what came in my trunk! PS I made a ridiculously long video showing the try-on. There are four items in the video that didn’t get photographed: a white top, two bags, a pair of loafers and a pair of cognac ankle boots. I don’t expect anyone to sit through 42 minutes of me going blahblahblah while I try on clothes, but you could always fast forward just to see the items not shown here. The link will be below.

J. Crew Crewneck Sweater with Jeweled Buttons, size 3x. Available in straight and plus sizes, and other colors.

Uhm. This is how I THOUGHT J. Crew’s plus sizing would fit. Not quite plus enough. I’ve been pleasantly surprised with some other items, but this was just too small and short for me.

Caslon Stitch Detail Pullover Sweater in Grey Heather, size 3x. Available in plus and straight sizes and in other colors.

This is very similar to a sweater I already own, that I never reach for. The stitch detail is sort of like a Fair Isle sweater, just without the colors. It’s sort of a thick, squishy, stretchy knit.

Vince Camuto Houndstooth Ankle Pants, size 24W.

I was not excited by the black and white houndstooth print when I first saw them but I was pleasantly surprised by the fit. They were not PERFECT but they were closer than I usually get! They would have required shortening and the waist seemed like it would stretch out and I would have the dreaded Droopy Crotch.

J. Crew Cameron Four Season Crop Pant, size 24W. Comes in regular, petite and plus, and in other colors.

When I first took these out of the bag I thought, No Way. But when I pulled them on and saw how nice the fit was, I was sold. They look better IRL than in the pictures…and I would not be wearing this short a top with them, so. These are the pants I kept! In navy, they’re like jeans but a tad elevated…and I have a lot of autumn and winter tops that will go great with them!

Vince Camuto Moss Crepe Blazer, size 24W. Available in other colors, including hot pink!

I’ve so enjoyed my black and white plaid Old Navy blazer, I was excited to try another one. This was a very nice item, well made, etc. It’s too large for me (look at the shoulders), but it is a perfect example of a good, classic piece ruined by a trendy detail. See the ruched sleeves? They’re sewn in. In a few years this blazer will look dated…whereas one with regular sleeves will not and will be useful for years and years.

Here’s a link to the endless video. There’s a lot more information about each item in the video, plus you can see them “in action.”

I did realize a helpful hack for try-on videos in the future (of course, AFTER I spent several hours creating this video), and that is, wear as many items as possible at one time. I could have worn the white top with slacks, the blazer, a bag and the loafers all together so I wouldn’t have had to spend so much time changing in-between! Duh. Live and learn.
