Free’n’Easy
I mentioned recently that I’ve been using this “working from home” time to wear some things in my closet that I rarely reach for; to see if I can find a better way to style them or if it’s just time for me to pass them along to someone else who can appreciate them more than I do.
This time has also been a good opportunity to try different outfits that seem great in theory, but that I’m not sure I have the confidence to wear out in public…especially to work. I don’t care as much about wearing kooky interesting outfits out in the world. I don’t know those people, I don’t care what they think about me, and I’m never going to see them again. But work is another story! I see those people every day! I do (somewhat) care what they think. Plus, work is work! Our dress code is relatively casual, but…there’s a limit.
So…when I went out on Monday, I wore this (what my mother would call a) “get up.” She loved to tell me I looked like I was going to a tacky party. She would have had a field day with this outfit! But I loved it! I felt very free’n’easy in it, which was a good way to feel in the midst of all this CHAOS.
You may remember I bought this dress last fall at Target when it was marked down to $8. It’s lightweight rayon and very loose and floaty. I really couldn’t wear it as a stand-alone item as my whole bra would be hanging out, so I bought it thinking it would make a great bathing suit cover-up! Someone here suggested I wear it like a jumper over a tee and I filed that away. The dress had fallen behind some drawers in the closet and I’d forgotten all about it…until a couple months ago when I took that vision board embroidery class in Brooklyn. One of the women in the class was wearing this dress. Over a white tee. And she looked adorable.
So I’ve been turning the apartment inside out looking for this dress ever since then…and just this weekend I moved some things around and there she was, peeking out from behind the ribbon storage on the closet floor. Monday was super mild and it just seemed like it was meant to be…and I wore this out to do my errands on Monday afternoon.
I loved wearing it. It’s so loose and swingy. It made me want to twirl. Remember how I wanted a muumuu last year? This almost fits that bill. It would have looked really cute under a cropped denim jacket but mine was in the wash.
So…it’s good for The World. And the beach. And for cocktails on the beach this summer. If that’s still a thing. But I will not be wearing it to work. It’s just for free’n’easy moments.

It’s a pretty pattern so I can see why you nabbed it. I found with our ageless style theme this week that if you just turn to layering you probably can find an acceptable combo that works for you. It looks like summer where you are. I finally got my first daffodil bloom and I think the forsythia might bloom this week as we’re in this never-ending winter. Stay safe on those errands my friend!

I really got it cuz it’s BIG and THIN, which makes it a perfect beach cover-up. I can’t stand trying to pull a snug(ger) dress on over salty sunburned skin and damp bathing suit and hair.
Like we’re ever going to be allowed to go to the beach again.
I think we’re just about a week ahead of you – forsythia and daffodils at full strength right now.

Love the dress. Ok, so not crazy about that tee. I think a snugger short sleeve white tee with a v-neck, to echo the dress neckline, would look really cute and let the dress shine without distracting stripes or loose sleeves. Great buy on that dress!

“I think a snugger short sleeve white tee,” agreed. But I don’t have that. I like the stripes but a snugger fit would have been better. I’ll wear it again with a white tee. Just this time, since I had the opportunity of no witnesses 🙂 I figured I’d go all the way!

Girl!! It’s absolutely perfect, and I think it really showcases your creativity. Now I know I’m not going to change your mind, but I bet the people you work with realize you are creative and have such great ideas….that’s what this outfit says to me.
This totally reminds me of the yellow maxi dress I just showcased on my IG—the hemline and way it flows!!
