Spring Vibes: Adding Pastels into Your Winter Wardrobe
This is where my mind is these days. Yes, me. Miss Dark Low Contrast Greyed Down Neutral. I want to roll around in the ice cream tubs at Baskin Robbins. Daiquiri Ice, Rainbow Sherbet, Bubble Gum, Mintcho. All those soft pastel colors. Yum.
To me, the fall is all about those rich, spicy, warm autumnal colors…but the second the New Year passes I’m over those warm tones and am thinking about gentler, cooler, pastels. But gentle. Low saturation colors. There’s months ahead for the hotter, more energetic colors. This is the time for just slowly rolling over and thinking about getting up out of your winter bed. There’s no rush. But start thinking about adding in a gentle pastel or two.
I’m picturing the collar of a lilac button-down peeking out from the top of a dark grey crewneck pullover (it is still winter, after all). A sage green tunic top over off-white jeans. Icy blue over black slacks. Blush over light-wash denim.
I like the thought of pairing a pastel item with a more neutral one, like black, navy, grey. For now. In the summer, CLASH ALL THE COLORS!
IĀ really love the thought of a sherbet-colored coat. That light blue coat in the collage at the top? BE STILL MY HEART. I’ve been coveting that coat since I first saw it last fall.
Those are the outfits in my mind’s eye. In reality, looking for these seemingly simple things in plus sizes is HA HA HA HA HA Good Luck Sister.
Which is how I ended up with this brighter-than-I-wanted blue sweater. Why is it so hard to just get what you want?
Now I feel guilty. There are people without enough clothes to keep themselves warm…and I’m complaining that the shade of blue is not exactly what I wanted. Ugh, I’m the worst.
Okay, I have a couple coats and a whole mess of scarves and socks I can donate. I’ll pack them up and drop them somewhere tomorrow.
Whoa. Took a hard turn there. Back to my blue sweater. It’s just like an olive green one I bought in December, which has been so nice and easy to wear multiple ways that I thought this was a good risk even though the blue wasn’t exactly what I wanted. And it’s definitely giving me some springy vibes, which is exactly what I’ve been wanting.
How about you? Are you making any “heading towards spring” adjustments to your wardrobe (or life!) right now?

I hear you on this. I can’t wait for Spring, warmer weather, and a sense of renewal after a year of confining COVID. I’m so happy I found pastel sweaters I had forgotten in my too small to wear sizes bin! They are my size again and so pretty. Lavender, blush, seafoam green, and powder blue sweaters from the late 1990’s. I did have to cut the shoulder pads out! Luckily you can’t tell they were there. The downside to finding these is that it re-enforces my tendency to hoard clothes that don’t fit and I don’t have room for š But so pretty and uplifts my spirits. Keep up your search, you will find something that makes you happy!

YES!!! Finding “good again” hoarded clothing for the win!!! OOh, I’m so excited for you! All those lovely colors! I just love when Old Favorites “fit again”!
But…I do love shoulder pads. I went through some serious withdrawal when they stopped putting them into clothing. I bought some stand-alone shoulder pads that velcro attached to my bra straps. They were subtle…but gave just enough definition to my shoulder, helped “fit” better into shoulder seams, to make everything look a little better.
My 35-year-old Magic Shirt actually still has the sewn-in shoulder pads. One is just barely hanging on by a thread, literally…but they’re probably part of the reason that top has survived all these years.
Anyway, happy for you for your found-again treasures!

I really like that shade of blue on you!
I seem to remember when I was younger that clothing had more seasons – that the warm, deep colors came out in fall, all the bling for the holidays, and then in January, instead of shoving swimsuits in our faces when it’s 5 degrees and snow is everywhere, there was a winter line with ivory and pastels. This was back in the 80s.
