Plus Size Outfit of the Day ~ March 29-April 2
The one where I wear a different plus size outfit every day…complete with critique.
This is my last week of work-from-home (a moment of silence, please). In looking back over the outfits from the past nine months, my “work” style has definitely gotten more casual. And there are outfits that worked on work-from-home days that are just not going to make it at the office. So this will be a challenge as for the past year I’ve mostly shopped for very casual items and only had to be office-appropriate 2-3 days a week. Granted, my office is not super strict, but…still, there’s a line. And I WANT to be Way Over There on THAT (comfy casual) side…so…we shall see. I made a long overdue trip to the dry cleaners so some things that have been balled up on the couch (bonus Points for getting that reference without googling) are now back hanging in the closet, ready to go.
SATURDAY
I’ve had this stripey Old Navy v-neck since September but I’m only just now really working it into outfits. I fell for it for the color, but when I got it I didn’t love the fit or the feel or something and I really meant to return it but just never got around to it. So it was just THERE, hanging around, not hated but also not worn.
UNTIL I started layering with it. I’ve always heard the term “layering piece,” but was just like, yeah, I layer things…but I think I get it now, that there are some items that are really SPECIFICALLY for layering and not intended for individual use. Like my H&M tees – the white and the polka dot ones. I’ve had them both for several years but barely wore them because they were short in front. But they’re great for LAYERING cuz you get the neckline under v- and crew-necks as just a little contrast detail.
And I love the mustard gold of this striped tee with so many different colors. I’m definitely more of an autumnal-colored person than summery pastels, so…it works with a lot of things. So it’s finally getting the use it deserves.
Later in this day when I went out, I added a denim jacket over the red plaid and mustard stripes…and it was delightful 🙂
Striped Tee: Old Navy, 3x
White Tee: H&M 3x
Plaid Button-down: Sanctuary, 3x
Jeans: Gloria Vanderbilt Amanda, Scottsdale wash, 3x
Sneakers: Converse Shoreline slip-ons
SUNDAY
Not much going on here. Not leaving the building for anything, it’s drippy dreary out there and I don’t need anything badly enough to go out.
I’d forgotten about this wine shirt with its oh so perfect tiny v-neck and stretchy sleeves. It was down at the bottom of my “things that go under things” drawer. I got excited to spot it as I’ve been thinking about wine with my recent mustard/olive/grey combos. But today it’s flying solo.
Long-sleeved Tee: Vislily, 3x, gifted
Jeans: Gloria Vanderbilt Amanda, Callisto wash, 20 short
MONDAY
Working in office. Mild enough temps that I risked wearing some cropped jeans. I feel very “officey,” and as I was putting this together I thought I should really save it for next week when people will actually be at work. It’s a vacation week here so it’s just a few of us working. But I just FELT LIKE IT today. Plus, any minute now it’s going to be too warm for a wintery cardigan, so…I should wear it while I still can.
It’s funny, years ago before this cardigan went into hiding, I used to ONLY wear it with a grey cashmere turtleneck. They’re NOT a set, but the color is practically identical and it looked like a twinset (I’ll find a picture). Oh, how I loved a twinset back in the day. With pearls. Anyway, it (grey cardigan) is happily branching out these days.
And speaking of being in hiding, the grey cashmere turtleneck has a red sister…and I have no idea where SHE is! Oh the woes of moving often. But that was always (oddly enough) my good dog walking sweater cuz it was lightweight and so warm and felt good on my neck for rambling around in the woods on cold days with Caleb.
I miss woods rambling.
Buttondown: Universal Standard navy Kennedy cupro blouse, 26/28. Bought on Poshmark.
Cardigan: Dean & White grey, 2x
Jeans: Gloria Vanderbilt Amanda, old, I don’t know the name of the color, 24 short
Shoes: Black Aerosoles Betunia flats
TUESDAY
In honor of My Very Last Work From Home Day, I am wearing my very best work-from-home comfy-schlubby outfit.
A Moment of Silence.
Sigh.
Old Shirt: 35-year-old (it’s older than my daughter) shirt from Macy*s. 3x.
Leggings: Old Navy High-Waisted Elevate Powersoft Plus-Size 7/8-Length Side-Pocket Leggings, 3x (affiliate link)
WEDNESDAY
Working in office. But leaving early to get second covid vaccine and I’m in a car line…so wanted to wear something I could remove easily to get to the short sleeved tee shirt below so they could access my shot arm from the car window. Phew. That was a long explanation for a simple look.
And my collared denim jacket cuz I’m having a second honeymoon with my denim jackets right now. I had a lot of fit and “lack of fabric pliability” issues for awhile there. I’m a big baby when it comes to stiff fabric. I WON’T DO IT. I WON’T.
Button-down: Madewell boyfriend, 3x
Tee Shirt: H&M, 3x
Jeans: Gloria Vanderbilt Amanda, Frisco wash, 20 short
Sneakers: Converse Shoreline slip-ons, navy
Denim Jacket: St. John’s Bay, 3x
THURSDAY
Vacation day. Mostly just piddled around the apartment. I hadn’t made plans since I was unsure how I’d feel the day after the vaccine, I’ve heard such disparate stories. But I felt fine. I had to get dressed to go to the bank for rent money. How does Rent Day to Rent Day go SO FAST?
Button-down: Old Navy, 3x
Pullover: Tahari, merino wool, 3x
Jeans: Gloria Vanderbilt Amanda, Scottsdale wash, 20 short
Sneakers: Converse Shoreline slip-ons, navy
FRIDAY
Vacation day. Today was the last day of one of the girls in my office so a few of us went in to throw her a little surprise birthday lunch. That was right in the middle of the day so I didn’t plan anything else…though I did go for a quick woods walk on the way home, on a weird whim.
Pullover: Tahari merino wool, 3x
Tee Shirt: H&M, 3x
Jeans: Gloria Vanderbilt Amanda, black, 20 short
Sneakers: Converse Shoreline slip-ons, black
Utility Jacket: Loft, 3x

It is strange to go back out into the world. I can relate – I could so easily be a hermit.
You’ll be fine – you’re in my prayers.

If someone told me I could never leave the house again I feel like I would not be too dismayed. That might change, but at least at the outset I feel I’d be just fine with that.

So much to say, so little time, LOL
1-I have many pieces that really are only for layering. And while it seems a waste, I do think they serve a purpose. Heck, I used to do this while working. I’d wear a thrifted tee under my sleeveless dry clean items so I could just wash the tee and not have to dry clean the other shirt. It was always under a blazer anyways, so no one would even see it. I still have most of those old tees and still wear them for layering.
As for that shirt that’s older than your daughter…it’s beautiful….the colors, the stripes!!! It’s like it’s been renewed into happiness!!
And second honeymoon with your denim jacket? Girl…maybe you should be a comedienne????

Stripes? The older-than-katie-shirt is solid blue. I’ll have to look back to see what shirt you were looking at.
Ha, people in my real life don’t think I’m so funny 🙂 I do a lot of “open mouth, insert foot” in real life. On the internet I have the benefit of time to consider before I “speak.”

That red top with the V-neck looks great on you! Wear more red…it’s a good color for you…you’re definitely a “winter.” Have you ever done your colors? It’s quite eye-opening.

I have never done my colors. I’m pretty happy with all colors on me except those that match my skin-tone too closely cuz then I look naked. I definitely PREFER the warm autumn-toned colors.
Have you done yours? If so, what was the outcome?

I forgot to say that the bright blue sweater in the last pic is a wonderful color for you, too!

Hi Bettye,
Years ago when the “color” business was hot, I bought a book about it. It was quite informative and you sure don’t need an “expert” to do it for you. I am definitely a Winter. My coloring is very similar to yours except that my skin is fairly pale…except when the rosacea kicks in, that is!
You might want to check it out!

I took an online color quiz this weekend and it was Pretty Firm that I am a Winter and should be wearing cool colors. Pass, ha ha. You Are Not the Boss of Me, Color Quiz!
I’m happy with the colors I choose for myself 🙂

Wait you wore a pullover sweater with a button up shirt OVER it?! I mean, you have to get the relative sizing right, but wow, I love it. The navy blouse is immediately: Whoa, that’s a nice blouse…oh, Universal Standard…$128, no wonder. When I curate my wardrobe to the 30 pieces I will ever need for every occasion for the rest of my life,” that would be $128 well spent. Or I’ll just start haunting Poshmark. I’ve taken down the details. The wine red with the light blue jeans is a sort of awesomely unexpected combination; I guess I always wear mine with darker denim. Also: Can we get someone to develop the ultimate sizing correspondence chart for various washes of GVA jeans? A 20W in brown is a 24W in celestial blue and whatnot? Unfortunately, I’m guessing that the real result would be like a 18W-24W in Color A is a 18W-24W in Color B. So I guess I just wrote the chart. Sigh.

Did I? Ha. You mean on Thursday? The oatmeal taupe merino wool Taharia pullover under the grey and white striped Old Navy button-down? Yeah. I did that. Ha. The Tahari crewneck is SO thin/lightweight it goes easily and comfortably over and under things.
And yeah, the Universal Standard shirt. I had that saved in my Shoptagr for like a year waiting for it to go on sale. Nope. But through dogged determination I found this one on Poshmark, still with tags on, for half the price of new. Score 🙂
I see the appeal of wine with dark denim, and I’m sure I’ve worn that combo in the past. But with spring on my mind I’m trying to come up with ways to lighten up my darker winter pieces.
I can make a GVA chart for the jeans *I* have that fit/don’t fit based on the color wash. I’ll share it on the blog and maybe others with similar experiences can add to it. I don’t have that many “colors.” Mostly black, white, and various iterations of blue.
