Torrid Plus Size Spring Try-On Haul
Now that I’ll be back in the office full-time, the search continues for spring/summer work clothes in my new aesthetic. Torrid had a nice selection of plus-size tops for spring, so…let’s do this.
The past few years have been very dress-y (not DRESSY, but “dress full”) and…sort of boho-y tops. I definitely have a different vibe in the summer. For one thing I’m just HOT. So I like loose-fitting, flowy things in natural fabrics. I can dress a little less heat-consciously at work cuz we have the greatest air conditioning ever. But it’s good to have some things that can go straight from work to play so I don’t have to go home to change in-between…cuz I live a million miles away from everything.
Here’s a 13-minute video showing the 7 tops I tried on from Torrid.
DARK SLATE GREY WASHED RAYON BUTTON FRONT BLOUSE
TAUPE WASHED RAYON BUTTON FRONT BLOUSE
MADISON – GREEN FLORAL GEORGETTE BUTTON FRONT BLOUSE
MADISON – BLACK FLORAL GEORGETTE BLOUSE,
GREEN FLORAL GEORGETTE DOLMAN SLEEVE BLOUSE
PINK TIE-DYE CHALLIS BUTTON DOWN SHIRT
WHITE & PINK CRINKLE GAUZE EMBROIDERED BLOUSE
If you’re interested in the look I was talking about with the tie-dye shirts, watch like one minute of this (starting at 41:36).
And while we’re on this particular stage, can we just admire Namjoon’s kimono for a moment? Stop. It’s stunning.
In the end, I kept four and returned three…that’s a pretty good success rate for me. Torrid has definitely evolved over the years. It used to be more edgy, urban, emo girl. Now they have a broader selection of styles, which is nice. And they have TONS of sales. Sometimes insane things like “Buy One Get TWO Free!” I mean, come on.
What new spring things do you have your eye on?

Hi Bettye, I liked both the shirts and thought they looked good, but I preferred the green, I thought the floral of the black one was a bit ‘old lady’ I loved the two ‘definites’!

Thanks, Lin! The green was the chosen one and has a home in my closet. I’m happy to see a little color there this time of year.

I vote no to both florals. Fit is good but I think both florals are too matronly. Anything you don’t love goes back.
bettyewp
Yeah, florals can be tricky and can easily go towards matronly. And I was on the fence about both of these. BUT I also cannot find what I DO want in my size and price range so I opted to keep the green just so I have SOMETHING. I try to avoid the workaround items but…I’ve been craving a little color and some florals, so…I let one stay 🙂
Thanks for your input!

I like the black print much better than the green which has a too small print. Think you are not used to color so give it a try

I love reading everyone’s responses: “Keep the black, ditch the green,” “keep the green, return the black,” “keep them both,” ” get rid of them both,” ha ha!
In the end, I kept the green. While this is not specifically one of the greens I’ve been obsessed with this spring, it’s a nice color and goes with several things already hanging in my closet. I already wore it once last week under a lilac v-neck sweater.
Thanks for your comments!

I really like the ones you decided to keep. I would return the florals because you don’t seem to really love them. You’re talking about ways to “make them work”. Compared to the solid black one, where you said “I love it, it will go with everything”.
bettyewp
You’re right about the “convincing” myself to keep them and that is not a good sign. But I also have a definite shortage of work clothes for spring and summer, so I had to weigh the need with the…love. I returned the black one and kept the green one, even though in the beginning I felt it would have been the opposite. But I can think of three ways to wear the green one and more if I ever get a new %&**$%! white tee shirt (aka The Holy Grail).
Thanks for playing!
Rita
I like the black shirt more than the green. And I thought the black one looked good on you. For me, I’d wear the black with a leather biker jacket, black jeans, and black boots. But like you said about wearing it with a black v-neck sweater that you don’t have, it’s not worth getting a shirt to be worn only one way. This would make me say no to both shirts.

Love the biker jacket with the black floral blouse look.
In the end, I did return the black floral…it just felt like a one trick pony. But the green floral goes with several other things in my closet so I think it will earn its keep.

Those two florals were a hard call, but I vote yes on the green and no on the black. The black one looked good in terms of fit and color but I wasn’t loving the specific floral print on you because it seemed too far in the direction of grandma’s sofa or something and the flowers seemed oversized. The longer I saw it on you, the less I liked it. The green floral print had much more of a vibe like….well, like I could imagine a guy wearing it kind of thing. And it looked really good with the black jeans and sneakers. At first, I felt like, huh, is that too high contrast? But the longer I saw it on you, the more I liked it.

Yeah, the “guy” test. And it’s particularly challenging cuz I have not found any ACTUAL guy clothes that I fit into (they’re generally taller, broader-shouldered, and slimmer-hipped), so I’m looking for Women’s Clothes That Look Like Men’s Clothes. This is not a common category 🙂 ESPECIALLY in plus sizes.
Life’s a challenge, to be sure.

Loved the first black top, it fit you beautifully. The green and black floral were nice, just the sleeve length bothered me. And also loved the white and red summer boho top. Looking up Torrid now to see if if they have one in my size 😏
While you were talking about the ones that didn’t fit well I found myself shaking my head “no” right along with you. I have the same problem with pants. One fits perfect but another same size but different color is cut differently. Drives me nuts!
I liked the video format, being able to see how the cut and fit moved with you was helpful.
bettyewp
I do a LOT of shaking my head “no” when I try things on 🙂

I loved both of the prints though I see you returned the black one. As soon as I saw it, I thought long black vest over it to break up the floral. Depending on the colors in the green one, you could still use the vest idea. It is tough finding clothes when you’re not the standard, right? I’m 5’1” and have thick thighs, but no butt and very short waisted. Jeans and pants are the bane of my existence!
bettyewp
Yeah, I THOUGHT I would keep the black floral…but every day when I thought WEAR IT, I was just…reluctant. So it went back just yesterday…the other things had already been sent last week. I always try to return asap so I can get the $ back in my account so I can buy MORE stuff.
Yes, options are severely limited when you don’t fit well into a straight size. I’ve been looking at vests all year and have not found the shape/style I want in my size…let alone in this country.
