My Body vs. The Retailers

There are many posts out on the interwebz about body positivity and feeling comfortable in your own skin, etc. This applies to all body types, shapes and sizes. This is not purely the domain of the plus size person.

Mostly, I do feel comfortable in my body. Emotionally comfortable. I don’t feel that I need to be thinner or different to be “better.” I’m neither less nor more than anyone else based on the shape or size of my body. And I’m proud of myself for feeling that way. I know many people struggle with their size, be it bigger or smaller than “the norm.”

fashion schlub bettye rainwater long island plus size fashion blogger 5.22.18 1 resized

That said, I don’t always feel physically comfortable. I’m a lot of weight for my body (and joints and feet and knees and hips and heart) to support and carry around. It can be hard to get up, hard to move around, forget about steps or inclines, lordy! And especially after last year, a year of not feeling well and being very sedentary…and then this year when my feet got so painful…I have barely moved, and I am really out of shape.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater long island plus size fashion blogger 5.22.18 4 resized

I don’t think you need to be “thin” to be “fit.” I know there are plenty of people who disagree with that, but I have seen overweight people run marathons (with no resulting health crises), I have seen fat people doing yoga, weight training, swimming, cycling, and more.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater long island plus size fashion blogger 5.22.18 6 resized

To the title of this post, I see many debates about the clothing industry and how they’re not meeting the needs of every body out there. Do I think they can do more? Sure. Do I think every clothing line is ever going to accommodate every size and shape out there? Probably not. I’m normally a size 24. I see other women who are size 24 who are shorter or taller than me, have flatter stomachs or wider hips than me, who carry their weight all on the top or all on the bottom…there is no way One Size Will Ever Fit All! There is no way multiple sizes will ever fit all!!!

fashion schlub bettye rainwater long island plus size fashion blogger 5.22.18 3 resized

And there are factors besides size when it comes to selecting clothing. I know several retailers who carry my size and even higher, and the clothes fit, but I don’t care for the fabrics, colors, or prints they use. Another couple of retailers carry my size and above and I really admire the styles, but the items are priced much higher than my budget allows.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater long island plus size fashion blogger 5.22.18 5 resized

Can you see where I’m going with this? For any number of reasons, retailers may always fall short of my needs – size, style and budget-wise. And I can’t control that. What I can control is ME. While others may say “it’s not your fault” that clothes don’t fit, and that may be true, the fact of the matter is that if I want more than three tops in my closet <- gross exaggeration for purposes of making a point, *I* can be proactive and not wait around for retailers to cater to me. I know this may be an unpopular opinion in the plus size community, but I can do something about this. If designers can’t make a top to fit my stomach…I can make my stomach smaller to fit their tops. Is this right or fair? Perhaps not. But I would like more clothing selection than is available that fits me. So I can meet them part-way.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater long island plus size fashion blogger 5.22.18 7 resized

This is my very roundabout way of saying I AM GOING TO LOSE SOME WEIGHT. Ha, how odd is it that in the current environment I feel I need to defend that statement. The world is crazy, yo! But yeah, I have no intention of going nuts with this, but I want to get to a place where clothes shopping is not so frustrating and difficult…and where just getting from Point A to Point B is not so challenging and exhausting. It will not be the focus of this blog, but I’ll let you know from time to time how I’m doing.

PHEW.

Onto the clothes! As serious as my thoughts were this week, my outfit was anything but! I got this fun, bright, easy-breezy Johnny Was top from Gwynnie Bee and I love it! Johnny Was makes beautiful boho-inspired items – tunics and kimonos and dresses, in plus and straight sizes. You’ve seen me in other Johnny Was looks here and here and here. They always make me feel happy, but quite honestly, I could never in a million years afford them! So Gwynnie Bee allows me to rent them to wear and enjoy…and then send back, without the high price tag! If you’re interested in learning more about clothing rental service Gwynnie Bee and getting one month free (!!!), follow this link.

Beyond the beachy tunic, my new Target sunglassesYAY FOR NO MORE SQUINTING (!!!), my long-time fave skinny jeans from Charlotte Russe and Sam Edelman chestnut brown sandals (sold out, similar here) round out the look.

My sister sent me this cool book called “Brooklyn: A Personal Memoir: With the lost photographs of David Attie” by Truman Capote. I love the black and white photographs of old Brooklyn. It’s sad to see the landscape so modernizing these days. Interesting side note re Truman Capote, my cousin was in the 1967 movie “In Cold Blood” as “young hitchhiker.” He must have been 12 or 13. I’ve actually never seen the movie. Someday.

What do you think about mainstream sizing and retailers’ responsibilities to their potential customers? I’d love to hear in the comments.

A Defining Moment

fashion-schlub-bettye-rainwater-plus-size-effies-heart-9-26-16-1-resized

I have been procrastinating for two weeks about writing this blog post…because I am so uncomfortable with the way I look in these pictures. I am *not* saying that to get a bunch of people saying, “no, you look great, blah blah blah,” in fact, I’d appreciate if you’d refrain from saying anything like that. It’s not about how *others* feel about how I look…it’s about how *I* feel about how I look!

I’d looked so forward to this dress from Gwynnie Bee – I’d had the same style in a different print a few months back (here) and I felt very comfortable in it. It was not so tight. But when I put this on, UGH. I don’t like the way I look in it At All.

fashion-schlub-bettye-rainwater-plus-size-effies-heart-9-26-16-4-resized

I’ve been wanting to talk about body positivity for awhile now. There’s so much buzz about it these days, and more recently some articles about DIETING and body positivity and how the two are mutually exclusive. I disagree. I think being body positive is a matter of feeling that your body – weight, color, size, shape, height – does not define YOU. It doesn’t define ANYONE.It doesn’t…QUANTIFY them as “good, bad, healthy, unhealthy,” whatever. I can accept that I’m fat and *also* accept that I am a good, valuable, (insert other positive terms here) person. Being fat doesn’t make me LESS or WORSE than someone who is not.

I do NOT feel that it means I can not try to change. I *can* diet and exercise WHILE being body positive (I CAN!!!).

Between seeing these pictures of me in this dress…and then standing on a friend’s scale a few weeks ago (mine broke LAST summer so I’ve been clueless about any weight fluctuation, and since I lean towards looser fitting items anyway, I wasn’t aware of any “ooh, this is getting a big tight” issues), I realize I’ve gained quite a bit of weight since last (2015) summer…and it’s not about the numbers on the scale, it’s about how I FEEL. And I am feeling UNCOMFORTABLE. Physically uncomfortable. Out of breath with the slightest exertion. Challenged to walk up a flight of stairs or even stand up from a sitting position. My hips hurt immediately when I start walking…and there’s a history of bad hips in my family, I feel I’ve been lucky in not having any trouble before now. I have a painful heel issue. Also, I’m pretty much sized up out of my long-standing size and am looking for clothing now in a 4x, and that is SO much harder. Most plus-size brands go up to a 3x. Few go beyond.

fashion-schlub-bettye-rainwater-plus-size-effies-heart-9-26-16-2-resized

These are all things that are making me want to Lose Some Weight. Not because of the way I LOOK. But because of the way I FEEL. Because of they way it’s hindering my comfort and my life. I am basing decisions on how uncomfortable I am at this weight. There are things I am Not Doing. Activities I’m avoiding. Invitations I’m declining. Jobs I’m declining. Because it’s Too Hard to Go Out, Walk Around, Sit for Long Periods Away from Home, etc.

I am still Body Positive. But I am going to do what I need to do to make my body work better for me and my life.

I’m easing into eating better, ha. Less fast food, more home-prepared food. And I’ve started walking 3-4 times a week. I’m not in a rush…but I want to change the upward trend and I think I’m doing that. I’m not even talking about losing half my body weight (which I easily could and STILL be “plump”). This first stage is just getting me back to where I was last summer, when I was a solid 3x. Then I’ll re-assess.

fashion-schlub-bettye-rainwater-plus-size-effies-heart-9-26-16-3-resized

And the number? On the scale? The highest it’s EVER been. Just a few pounds away from the big three-oh. oh. OH!

So, while I didn’t LIKE myself in the dress…I can still say, “Thanks a lot, dress!” for creating a defining moment.

What I’m Wearing:

Fake Out!

My high school (and beyond) boyfriend used to call make-up “fake out,” which, really, I guess it is. We can say we’re “highlighting” or “accentuating,” but really we’re CHANGING. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, but it’s just interesting. That SO many women spend time and money on doing things to change the way we look. Talk about body positivity (which is a big topic for another day)!!!

I don’t wear MUCH makeup, not for any philosophical reason, just cuz I never really learned to apply things correctly and it’s all expensive and time consuming, yadda yadda yadda.

But I wear a LITTLE. Mascara is my “must wear” item, otherwise I feel like my eyes entirely disappear. WHO CARES? Apparently I do, ha.

And I went through A Lipstick Phase in the mid-90s. My (now ex-) husband would put a new lipstick in my Christmas stocking every year cuz he loved a RED lip. It was always too bold, too HEY!!! LOOK AT ME!!! for me, and I don’t think I ever wore any of the Christmas stocking lipsticks (sorry, ex). But it did get me to try OTHER (less in your face) lip colors…and 20-something years later I’m still looking for the right shade and formula!!!

It’s SO hard to tell how a color will look on you and it’s expensive to buy a new one, try it on and have it Not Be Right and be out the $4-25!!! Kate at The Small Things blog (this same post talked about how she researches makeup purchases online, I highly recommend reading it as I found it very useful) convinced me (well, not her PERSONALLY, but reading her blog, ha ha) to RETURN makeup and beauty products if they are not to your satisfaction. And boy, most of them are NOT!!! Amiright?!?!

Which is exactly what happened here. The pictures that follow may horrify you. You’ve been warned. They’re just crappy close-up cell phone shots. Again, YBW.

This is a lipstick, NYX (that I keep reading wonderful things about), they just didn’t have the shade I was looking for and I was in Lipstick Buying Mode, so I improvised. And things went horribly wrong. But I just want to point out HOW different the color looks in the tube (lovely) vs. on my lips (Whatever Happened to Baby Jane). Okay, here goes nothing (somehow this feels more terrifying to me than posting the pictures of me in the bathing suits!!!)

lipstick-travesty-9-24-16

Ha! How did THAT color come out of THAT tube? Egads! Not what I was going for At All.

So, what is the moral of this long story?

  • Do your homework before purchasing makeup/health&beauty stuff.
  • Know that you CAN return opened products! I’ve already returned the day-glo pink lipstick, No Questions Asked 🙂

What sort of experiences have you had with buying beauty products and having them NOT be what you thought they were going to be?

I Wore the Same Dress to Work All Week…and the World Didn’t End

I don’t even think anyone noticed! Maybe the girls I share an office with *noticed,* but they’re both too nice to say anything 🙂  But I do think the point is that maybe we don’t need as many clothes as we think we do – unless you wear really striking or outrageous things, most people don’t even really notice.

I wore the invisible black dress (MAN am I getting my money’s worth of that thing!!!) all week to work (granted it was a 4-day work week due to Labor Day Monday, but I wore the dress Monday, too – I just don’t have a picture), just accessorized differently every day. So the OUTFIT looked different even though the base was the same. And I did wash it in the sink Wednesday night…not that I’m rolling around in the dirt at work (usually), but I do spill food on myself a lot (I call my boobs “food catchers,” cuz that’s where stuff ends up).

And WHY did I do this, really? After a week’s vacation, one of the most annoying things to think about when returning to work is “WHAT AM I GOING TO WEAR???” And I just thought it would be so lovely to wear my favorite, most comfortable, easiest to accessorize dress every day, so I thought I’d do this little experiment and see if anyone noticed, said anything, whatever. And it was a success!

Tuesday I wore the dress sleeveless with black floral sandals.

1

Wednesday I wore a thrifted flax linen shirt over top.

2

Thursday was Kimono #1 with a druzy pendant necklace from Charming Charlie.

3

And Friday was Kimono #2 and flats

4

So, the next time you’re in a quandary about what to wear and you’re tempted to wear an item from the day before…trust me, no one’s going to notice. Or care.

Now I’ve got to get ready to go to a fundraiser tonight…AND FIGURE OUT WHAT I’M GOING TO WEAR!!!

Plus Size Summer Outfit Review

I know, I know, I’m the leading proponent of SUMMER’S NOT OVER but…there will not be any new summer OUTFITS this year, so I feel I can do this now.

I think I did pretty well with my summer clothes shopping this year, I kept my “want” list tightly edited and really didn’t get anything that I wasn’t happy with or didn’t get a lot of wear out of. Usually there’s at least a couple duds that I have buyer’s remorse over. My only complaint is that I never got as *many* items as I wanted. My wardrobe is the opposite of many people’s, in that I don’t have too MUCH stuff, I have too little. Which is why the outfit posts got pretty spare for the past month, because I’ve already shown everything!

So I’m going to review my favorite outfits, and why they worked so well…and share one or two of my least favorites and why they got a little less wear than the others. I like to review like this, it helps me in shopping for NEXT season, in this case FALL WINTER, making note of lessons learned through success *and* failure…and what I might want to do differently next time.

My very favorite item was this black sleeveless swing dress from Asos Curve, “The Invisible Dress.” I’ve had it since March and it’s gotten a TON of wear, has washed well (hand washed cold water, hung to dry) and looked good both on its own and with secondary pieces over top. I would be very happy with this exact dress in navy and taupe and grey and…yeah.

img_3152

My second favorite item was this navy and white stripe dress from Rainbow. It was $12.99. Come on. I wore it tons as well, until I broke it 😦  I’ll explain that in an upcoming post.

My two other favorite dresses this summer were Denim 1 and Denim 2.

Old Navy Pintuck Trapeze Tencel Dress

I had a bit of internal fashion struggle before I could wear this one to work because it seemed so nightgownlike to me. If I didn’t have to go to a workplace every day, this dress would be on heavy repeat. Because it IS like wearing a nightgown!

fashion schlub plus size fashion 6.20.16 2 resized
Rachel Roy Tencel High-Low Dress

This one was definitely more work-friendly, but if I had to choose (which I never did!) I would let this one go and keep the nightgown one.

fashion schlub plus size 6.23.16 4 resized

And a perennial favorite for like 10 years, seriously (though this may be it’s last summer)…this Target Mossimmo dress.

Some other summer faves were from Gwynnie Bee…

Sangria Blue Dipped Floral Dress
IMG_2180
Alice & You Dress in Ditsy Floral Print

And moving away from dresses, the is the year I discovered I love tunics over leggings…and this was my favorite outfit of that type.

IMG_0795

Olive green sleeveless tunic from Bobeau via Nordstrom Rack. When it was still a little cool I wore this crochet knit black duster/cardi from Avenue, and as it got warmer and I learned the SO WHAT IF MY ARMS ARE FAT philosophy, I wore it sleeveless.

So what do *most* of my favorite items have in common? NO WAIST. No elastic or seam or belts. I feel so much better in a swing or trapeze style dress…no futzing all day with an elastic waistband or feeling like a maternity case when my belly protrudes out below an empire seam. They’re more challenging to find, but for me, worth the time and effort.

My *least* favorite purchase for summer was this sagey green knit dress from BooHoo…

img_0624

I fell for the color and the super-soft stretchy knit fabric…but see how the elastic empire waist right under my boobs makes my stomach appear to be BURSTING with child?? Ha. Not the look I’m going for.

So this fall I will be looking for leggings, tunics or oversized sweaters and blouses, and waistless dresses.

I think it’s valuable to assess at the end of each season and consider what worked for you and what didn’t, to avoid costly mistakes in the future.

What were your fashion failures and successes this summer?

Oh, Deer!

Sorry, couldn’t help myself.

I feel like I say that a lot 🙂

Anyway, we did a quick photo shoot last night before dinner at a nearby marina…and there are deer there, too! This pic is not my favorite of me, but…DEER.

fashion schlub plus size bettye rainwater 8.22.16 1 resized

My girlfriend Debbie has been staying with me for a little while, she’s between homes at the moment while deciding whether to return to Long Island after many many years…or to upstate New York after an absence of just a few months. Upstate seems to have many more items on the “pro” list, and yet…

fashion schlub plus size bettye rainwater 8.22.16 3 resized

Long Island has beaches and marinas and parks and convenient shopping and roadways and it’s close to the city…and DEER. It’s a tough call. I’ve been pretty anti-Long Island for a long time because it’s not where I *really* want to be (Brooklyn), but…I have to say, after Brooklyn, it’s probably my second choice of places to live at this point in my life.

fashion schlub plus size bettye rainwater 8.22.16 4 resized

Do you *love* where you live? Or is it just The Place You Ended Up…because that’s where your parents raised you or you or your spouse got a job or it’s where you could afford?

fashion schlub plus size bettye rainwater 8.22.16 2 resized

Anyway…this is an easy-to-wear dress, perfect for an easy evening out with a friend. Super stretchy, loose swingy skirt. Kinda felt like a nightgown! I’m drawn to clothing that feels or looks like sleepwear. I’m my mother’s daughter.

The Perfect Date Dress

Want to go out with me? Cuz I have the perfect date dress!

fashion schlub plus size bettye rainwater 8.14.16 2 resized

What makes a good date dress? Anything that makes you feel flirty and pretty! It should be easy to wear and comfortable. No one wants to be worried about parts slipping out or having to suck your tummy in. It’s nice if it looks a *little* more special than something you’d wear to work or out with girlfriends. And I think a little bit of va-va-voom never hurts -it makes *you* feel a little sexy…and HIM feel excited and proud to be out with you. A bit of a neckline plunge, or some snugness at your hips showing off your curves, or a hemline that shows off your legs – pick one and have fun!

fashion schlub plus size bettye rainwater 8.14.16 5 resized

fashion schlub plus size bettye rainwater 8.14.16 4 resized

This dress fills the bill for me with the bodice, the plunging v neckline and even the wide straps. It has sort of a “Marilyn Monroe standing over the heating grate” vibe to me. But then the skirt is pleated and full, very prim and proper – I like the contrast.

fashion schlub plus size bettye rainwater 8.14.16 3 resizedfashion schlub plus size bettye rainwater 8.14.16 7 resizedAnd it’s twirly and swingy. Those are high priorities for me. fashion schlub plus size bettye rainwater 8.14.16 1 resized

I’m wearing a new bracelet I actually bought for myself (GASP). It was from a cute little “reclaimed and vintage” shop in Northport Village. I didn’t get the jewelry-maker’s card but the name of the shop is True Blue Village. They had home decor and gifts and really interesting handmade jewelry. I already know the piece I’m going to get next – maybe a birthday present to myself.

Declaring Independence

fashion schlub plus size 7.2.16 6 resized

Fat people shouldn’t wear white.

Okay.

fashion schlub plus size 7.2.16 7 resizedfashion schlub plus size 7.2.16 2 resized

Happy Independence Day! Congratulations to our nation for declaring its independence 200something years ago.

And I’m declaring my independence from (stupid) rules like “fat people shouldn’t wear white.” I suppose it’s because light colors make things seem more prominent…larger. Well, newsflash, the darkest black in all the land is not going to hide the fact that I am FAT. Dark colors might make me a little more invisible…but I Don’t Want to Be Invisible!!! And so white I shall wear. And horizontal stripes. ETCETERA.

What “rules* do YOU break? Or HAVEN’T broken??

What I’m Wearing:

My Week in Review: Week 16

Four months of Fashion Schlub, woohoo! In case you hadn’t noticed, I’m big on anniversaries, commemorating special dates, etc.

Last weekend I was just plumb tuckered out. It was a beautiful weekend – everyone was out at the beach, barbecues or by the pool. I was happy to be inside in the air conditioning with no “out in the world” commitments. I have a bit of a proclivity towards reclusivity. I get that from my mother. She could go days without leaving the house…without even getting dressed. There are times I consciously fight against this inner tendency…and sometimes, exhausted, I just go with it. Unlike her, I know I *have* to go out eventually, because I have to work, so I’m not especially worried when I hang my feet over the edge of the rabbit hole for a couple days. She had the luxury…or disadvantage, depending how you look at it…of not having to work, so she truly *could* just hide out at home, reading (then saving. forever.) her New York Times and keeping track of winning lottery numbers in notebook after notebook and ordering umpteen Joan Rivers’ cocktail rings off the Home Shopping Network.

But My Mother is a whole other story for another day.

Anyway, I got my little mental break from The World last weekend…which was good because this week I needed to be able to go Full Steam Ahead.

It was Camp Week at work which is just a whole different set of issues than usual. No pictures are anywhere to be shared yet, so…

I got a dress from Gwynnie Bee that wound up being sort of a line in the sand for me. It was much shorter than I’m used to. I tried it with bare legs and with leggings…wasn’t really happy with either.

gw dress 6.26.16

But I wore it out anyway.

Then there was the striped-tee controversy.

IMG_1907

I met up with friends at a coffee house that usually has a vegan goodie or two…and always has some local artists’ work up on the walls, which is nice. Chocolate-chip ch-ch-ch-chia cookie. Yum.

This time they had an exhibit by local high school kids.

Thursday night I went to an aquarium to photograph a Sweet 16 party.

Doesn’t she look like Cinderella? It was a really fun family to photograph. I love shooting people who LIKE to be photographed – it is a rare treat.

Ask Me How I Am

fashion schlub plus size 6.29.16 3 resized

Go on. Ask me.

“Okay, how are you?”

“I’m OUTSTANDING.”

In the field.

Ba dum-bump. Sorry. I hadda. Corny Daddy jokes run deep in my veins.

fashion schlub plus size 6.29.16 1 resized

Anyway, just a simple outfit post here. But can I just say that a year ago I would NEVER have worn a sleeveless top out in public. Never. Ever. Never ever.

So, this is the chosen tunic top from the Target try-on haul a couple days ago. I’m wearing a black cami under it due to the ginormous arm holes. I’m not happy about it but I’m doing it. I WILL prevail over the cavernous arm holes on sleeveless tops. I will (shakes fist at sky).

fashion schlub plus size 6.29.16 4 resized

This was nice to wear. Ava & Viv from Target, lightweight rayon, size 3x. Nice drape. I could even wear it unbuttoned over a black tee or dress as a vest-type thing. Ooh, lookit me with the layering creativity!

And *speaking* of layering creativity, my new friend Debbie (aka The Queen of Layering) over at Fashion Fairy Dust has been been nominated for Fashion & Lifestyle Blogger Of The Year. Whoa! The Pittsburgh Style Week (hope I’m saying this right!) recognizes the leading men and women in fashion, business, and the arts and honors them for their extraordinary accomplishments. If you have just a moment and could trot over to the voting page, take a look at the nominees, then Vote for Fashion Fairy Dust (cuz, you know, she’s the best), that would be amazing and I will be your very best friend.

Style Week Pittsburgh <- Vote there! Scroll down a-ways to “Meet the Nominees – FASHION & LIFESTYLE BLOGGER OF THE YEAR” and give Debbie your vote.

And ps, my amazing daughter has been doing some of my photo shoots lately…like this one! She’s doing a great job, don’t you think??

And THAT, my friends, wraps up my 30-DAY BLOG EVERY DAY CHALLENGE!!! I kinda can’t believe I actually did it. I kinda think Pittsburgh should give ME an award, too!

While challenging, it was actually kinda fun. And it was very exciting to see how many new followers I got during the 30 days. Thanks You Guys, for reading and following and commenting. I felt I little alone here back 30 days ago…and now I feel like I’ve made some new friendships…and rekindled some old ones. But now I will let myself off the hook a bit and return to a more manageable, 3ish times a week.

See you in a couple days!!!
