Styling Four Plus Size Looks from One Blazer!

I have been dying to add a longline blazer to my wardrobe since I started following Lizzie Hadfield of Shot from the Street a couple years ago…and now I also drool over the outfits of Emma Hill for the same reason. They’ve both got this super cool, minimal, slightly-masculine-tailoring-but-in-a-very-chic-way thing down. They make it look effortless. Us mere mortals have to work at it a bit more…and on a round plus size body, that lean minimal look never looks quite right. But I just keep plugging away and one of these days I’ll get it! In the meantime I’m coming up with some outfits I’m pretty happy with – and this Karen Kane soft structure blazer has starred in several of them.

First I created an office look, with a black and white polka dot blouse and black cropped trousers with black loafers. I don’t know what was up with my face!

Adding the Third Piece of the blazer pulled the outfit together and made it more office appropriate. And, yay, face back to normal!

The second look is very casual, maybe weekending with the girls or running errands.

Take it up a notch with blazer and scarf!

The third look is a little more artsy, starting with a solid black base layer…(ooh, there’s That Face again!).

Dress it up a bit with the blazer over top!

And lastly, another very casual look, but this time in pastels and white (GASP! WHITE JEANS IN FEBRUARY?!? WHAT IS SHE THINKING?? I’m thinking I can wear white denim whenever the heck I want).

And a blazer makes it a little less casual and a little more polished…even though it’s still basically an outfit with jeans and trainers!

Do you have one piece that can complete many different outfits?

There’s a little video if you want to see all the outfits in action (and hear me blather on about one thing or another). If you watch and like the video I’d really appreciate if you’d give it a thumbs up on YouTube.

Week in Review: Week 98

Well, THAT was an exciting week! Ha ha, just kidding. I’ve barely left the apartment since New Year’s Day. I had some sort of evil stomachey thing for two days and then we had SUPER SNOW BOMBOGENISIS so two snow days from work…and then the weekend! I HAVE to go out this morning because I’m out of everything…and to make sure the winds didn’t re-snow the car in since being shoveled out on Thursday. So, I’ve just been a hermit recluse, which is really my favorite way to be anyway (yes, I am my mother). But I really needed that. Tomorrow will be back to the real world.

So we start off with some pics from 2017 – the top nine pictures from my two Instagram accounts – the first is Fashion Schlub, the second is Bettye Rainwater Photography, in case you were interested in following.

I started off the new year with a nice day in Brooklyn with a friend. Breakfast at Egg, then driving around a bit in the bitter cold just seeing the sights. That’s one of my favorite things to do.

Then the snow came. I know this doesn’t look like much but I don’t usually have snow on my little porch at all. It was mad windy, yo. It just occurred to me I should find a new place to hide my spare key (I’m notorious for locking myself out) because right now it’s buried under a ton of snow. Oh gosh, I hope I didn’t just jinx myself.

The puppies were not concerned about the snow in the least. I’ve been dog-sitting this week so have many puppies.

Since it has been so bitterly cold they only go out for a few minutes at a time.

But I love the snow. I love the quiet when it’s falling. I love that it covers everything up at a time when things are brown and bare. I love that it slows down the world. And traps you inside. I *really* love snow days (ha ha). In Bettyeland it would snow heavily right at Christmas and the ground wouldn’t be seen again until the crocuses start to bloom in March/April.

And at the end of this week I had the surprise of being mentioned in a Ravishly feature on plus-size fashion in the workplace. That was kinda cool!

So that was my quiet week – just me and the puppies and the snow. Real life will start barging in today when the vet comes to check on Caleb…and I have to lug cardboard and online shopping returns out to my car…and grocery shop and pick out outfits for the week…and blah blah blah. Real life. Am grateful for my little respite from it.

And on we go….

Time Flies

As Thanksgiving weekend passes and we move into December and the Christmas holiday season, I remember being little, maybe 5 or 6, and counting the days til Christmas and bemoaning HOW FAR AWAY IT IS and WON’T CHRISTMAS EVER GET HERE?! It was probably early in December, I remember decorations already being out. Anyway, my mother said “blah blah blah – you know, when you get older, time will go faster.”

I didn’t think much of that at the time (come on, I was 5), but I never forgot her words…and as I did get older and better able to think more philosophically about things, I gave more thought to the passing of time. And now, at 57, I realize she was correct, time does seem to pass more quickly now. Obviously it doesn’t actually go faster…a year is always 365 days, an hour 60 minutes, etc., but looking back, I feel like I’ve been alive about a minute.

People ask why this is so. My (highly scientific and educated, ahem) opinion is that it has to do with relativity. The more time has actually passed, the smaller any segment of it seems. When you’re 5, one year is a fifth of your entire lifespan, that’s a big chunk. When you’re 57, a year is only 1/57th of your entire life…that’s a very small sliver, relatively speaking. It’s still 365 days, but it SEEMS smaller (shorter) compared to earlier years.

But when it all comes down to it…just make good use of the time you have. You rarely have as much as you think. Have some fun. Take a day off. Don’t waste time being aggravated (I’m whispering this one in my own ear). Surprise a loved one with a visit or phone call. Volunteer. Make a difference.

Lecture over!

I’d been saving this plus size Junarose “botanical print” tunic til fall, even though I got it late summer from plusBKLYN. It just seemed autumny to me and I knew it would be perfect under the olive green duster I didn’t own yet (but obviously do now!). And I was right! I’ve seen it worn as a dress (if you’re a little more daring than I!) and as a tunic…belted and unbelted. It has a cool exposed zipper in the back and loose three-quarter sleeves. I’ve just worn it over black leggings and I meant to change into my black flats after traipsing through the woods looking for the ideal photo spot…but I got so aggravated (what a time waster!) at my new wireless shutter remote (that has since been replaced by one that actually works with my camera) that I forgot to change my shoes. D’oh! Anyway, it’s an ideal transitional piece because it’s super lightwight if it’s warmish but with a cardigan over, it’s just right if it’s coolish.

One Dress: Three Outfits

Okay, so, one of my requirements for new items to be added to my wardrobe is that they must be versatile. I ask myself if an item I’m coveting can be worn three different ways. If not…it has to REALLY have something else going for it. I especially like pieces that can be dressed up *and* down just by switching out accessories.

This is one of those items. I got this dress from JC Penney’s Boutique+ plus size line. I love the fabric and fit, it floats across my body barely touching it and has a lot of swing and movement when I walk. And it’s simple without being boring – the lace-up detail at the neck gives it a little sumpn-sumpn. And it dresses up and down very nicely. I’ve styled it here for a date look, out for a drink with friends, and a comfortable work look.

For the date look, I’ve worn it with over the knee boots and a slightly sparkly cardigan…some swingy earrings and a little arm bling.

I would wear the next look out in the evening for cocktails with friends (anyone wanna go out for cocktails?), with my faux leather moto jacket, black booties…and dangly brushed silver earrings that I forgot to photograph. Bad blogger. Bad!

And lastly, a comfortable work or afternoon at the coffee shop outfit. A cozy longline cardigan, low-heeled booties and this darling ring my daughter got for me.

I’d like to thank my new blogger friend Marcy of Fearlessly Just Me who took these photographs – she did a really good job, don’t you think?
