Influencer is Not a Bad Word!

So, last week, one of my co-workers (I’ll call her C) said to me how much she was enjoying my blog and that it had influenced her to pay more attention to looking good and dressing in more than just casual jeans all the time. I was really moved by this – like wow, I’m really an “influencer,” in the best sense of the word! Not to make the moment about me (ha ha, though that is my special gift!) but it really made me feel good.

C said she was travelling to visit family out of state and bought some new clothes – dresses – to wear on her trip. Her sister complimented her on how nice she looked and said she should dress that way more often, which I’m sure made C feel really good. And it made me feel good to know she felt good! It was a big warm fuzzy circle of looking good and feeling good!

And that’s a huge part of why I do this – and I’m sure many other bloggers as well. It’s my way of saying you can make a big impact with how you look and feel (yes, you!) with really not a lot of effort. You just have to Do It!

I spent many years thinking…I’m too fat, I’m too old, I don’t have any sense of style, boo hoo hoo. But finally I just decided to do it anyway. To make the effort to dress better anyway. Even If I was fat and old and bleh. And you know what? I feel so much better now. I look better. I’m still fat and old, ha ha. But…it’s better. And if *I* can do it, anyone can.

And onto today’s outfit. Sorry to be back in the white jeans again (!) two outfit posts in a row but I got this adorable top from Gwynnie Bee and while it would also look nice over black or blue jeans (or even the green jeans on my list!), I thought it would look best over the white jeans.

I do love this top from Loft Plus. Loft’s new plus size line really has a lot of nice items. I haven’t quite worked out the fit yet on some things. I’ve regained weight in my stomach since last year when I lost some, so a lot of things are being snugger around my belly. I do want to make a plan about that before long. Just so I can find clothes to fit!

Anyway, this top is a very nice lightweight rayon fabric, in a businessy blue and white oxford-like stripe…but then with some feminine embroidery on the chest and amazing bell sleeves. And – do you have any idea how much I love a tab/band collar?? A LOT. I love them a LOT.

It was just a little cool and windy this day (and the next day – 82 degrees!) so the green Tencel jacket came back out. But it was so nice to finally be able to wear something that felt springy…and not be freezing!!!

Springtime Plus Size Try-on Haul

So, spring shopping has begun. Well, spring trying-on and buying-and-returning has begun. I only need (want) a couple new clothing items to round out my warm weather wardrobe:

  • cropped/ankle length white jeans
  • a couple pairs of colored pants that aren’t jeans
  • some tops that are a little nicer than just tee shirts – like button downs and tunics
  • 1-2 lightweight knit sweaters
  • a dress. I don’t NEED another summer dress but I saw this dress in the Ellos catalog and I can’t get it out of my head. I need to at least try it on.

Boy, when I make it into a list it seems like more than I was thinking. But in reality I know I’ll never find all these things to fit, so…the list will narrow as I go along.

Last weekend I stopped into my local Avenue store and tried on a few things. I was pretty firm with my black and white palette. I feel like I start out every season with black and white, then just add in a few colors later on.

avenue tryon 1

These were supposed to be ankle length but I’m short and my legs are short, so. And the cuff wasn’t sewn-in or anything so it was just going to come right down and then the pants are too long. I’ve tried cuffing jeans and I’m just not good at that sort of thing. They’re crooked, they don’t stay up, etc. I need the manufacturer to do it for me and put in a couple nice stitches!

avenue tryon 2
Avenue White Washed Rolled Ankle Jean size 22

Since the ankle length was too long, I tried on the capris thinking they might just go to my ankle. But they’re just weird. They’re not as neat as a true skinny jean would be but they’re too tight for a straight leg…and the bottom had like a kick flare. Which is not flattering on my short thick legs.

Avenue Washed Capri Jean in White size 22

So I went up a size and it was no better.

avenue tryon 4
Avenue Washed Capri Jean in White size 24

I tried a pair of wide-leg pants in a black and white geometric…but my legs are so thick that “wide leg” fits me like a tapered cut! If the waist wasn’t pulled up all the way to my bra I might have bought them!

avenue tryon 6
Avenue Dot Relaxed Pull-on Pant size 22

Then, always the search for white tee/tank/tunic SOMETHING WHITE. Sigh. This should not be so hard.

avenue tryon 7
Avenue Reversible Tank size 22/24

And, just because it was white and on sale…I tried this ruffly blouse on. It wasn’t bad but I don’t really have a need for that, so…back it went. Back it all went.

avenue tryon 3
Avenue Choker Cascading Ruffle Neck Blouse size 22/24

I’d been excited to try a couple things from Loft’s new plus size collection. The items were nice but the fit was just a little off. I will definitely try something else from there because I really like the styles and when they go on sale the prices are not unreasonable.

Loft Items:

Not much luck on this first go-round!

What do you have on your spring wish list??

Fun at Home

I have an aunt that used to (maybe she still does, but I haven’t seen her in a long time) refer to certain items in her wardrobe as “fun at home” clothes. Things like swishy palazzo pants and lightweight drapey cardigan/kimonos. She sort of had the Eileen Fisher vibe before there was “Eileen Fisher.” When we would go shopping (often at the dearly departed Loehmann’s ) she would pick up things off the rack and hand them to me and I’d be like uh, no, where would I wear THAT? And she would respond, “fun at home!” Ha. Now everytime I see drapey clothes, loose swingy items, I think of my aunt and her Fun at Home clothing credo.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater plus size over 50style long island blogger 1.29.18 4 resized

I always have fun at home. I really am an introvert and need a lot of time to myself and enjoy being alone at home. For a long time I thought there was something wrong with me. But there’s not. I just really enjoy my own company, ha!

fashion schlub bettye rainwater plus size over 50style long island blogger 1.29.18 5 resized

When I was young, my favorite days were when I’d get home from school and my mother’s car was not in the driveway. That meant she was out shopping and I would get the spare key out of the old q-tip box in the garage (remember when the boxes had the slide-out tray like this?) and let myself in…and just REVEL in the solitude. Sigh. Of course, I also loved when I’d walk in the front door when she was home to the smell of homemade chocolate pudding. She made real pudding with corn starch and cocoa and milk…and cooking it all on the stove created an insanely inviting chocolatey aroma…oh.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater plus size over 50style long island blogger 1.29.18 6 resized

Do you enjoy being alone? Or do you prefer company? Isn’t it interesting how we’re all so different…and yet we’re all okay just the way we are?

And how fun is this kimono? Rich navy blue burn-out velvet floral with crazy crocheted fringe bottom. Can be dressed up or down…on this day I chose “down” over a simple base layer of skinny jeans and a black tunic.

And had a little “fun at home” on my own.

I Got My Own Back

i got my own back

While you may be fortunate enough to have friends and family available to you when you need them, at the end of the day you really have only yourself to rely on. That realization always makes me a little sad, but…it’s true. It doesn’t mean people don’t love you or care about you or want to help you, but people have their own stuff. When and if they can help you, they will. But sometimes they can’t…and then it’s on you.

I have a friend who recently said to me, “don’t expect me to rescue you.” I was a little taken aback because I have certainly never asked him to rescue me…or anyone for that matter. Well, maybe when I was younger. I do come from a generation when women still expected to get married and be supported, more or less, by a husband. For better or worse, that’s the way it was at the time – I was just on the cusp of that changing, but…when I was young I did have that expectation. But it has been a lonnnggg time since I’ve expected to be “rescued.” I expect to be taking care of myself til the day I die.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater long island plus size fashion blogger 1.27.18 9 resized

This is not to say that I don’t appreciate help. I like to say “someone in the boat with me.” Sharing the load of rowing. Sometimes my arms get tired and it’s nice for someone to take over for a bit. But if they fall overboard and get eaten by sharks (heh heh), I’ll just row alone. I am woman, see me row.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater long island plus size fashion blogger 1.27.18 7 resized

And what on earth does all that have to do with today’s post? Well, I’m still without a photographer. Ha. And I was panicking that I posted no outfit post last week and I didn’t want to repeat that this week, so…I got up at the crackadawn on Saturday and me and the tripod went down to a little nearby beach (where I hoped I’d have no witnesses!) to shoot. One hour, 200 shots, less than ten usable. Not a great ratio. BUT…I managed.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater long island plus size fashion blogger 1.27.18 5 resized

I call this my Carolyn of Un-Fancy sweater. It seems like in every outfit she has this chestnut brown color in something and I have coveted it for sometime…and searched high and low for something in this color. I finally found this poncho sweater on Ellos.com…and it was back-ordered. I’m usually too impatient for that sort of thing but I was so in love with this color that I ordered. And waited. And waited. And finally it arrived…in all its chestnut glory, exactly the shade I’ve been dreaming of.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater long island plus size fashion blogger 1.27.18 3 resized

In all honesty it’s a little big. Ellos is a sister to Woman Within, my “everything is too big” nemesis, ha. That sizing, combined with the fact that it’s totally open on the side (a fact that, despite it being called a poncho sweater, was lost on me when placing my order. I was blinded by the color), makes it quite voluminous. Even on me. It’s a little like wearing a blanket with sleeves. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. Anyway, I’d waited so long to get this one, I was certainly not sending it back and starting all over.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater long island plus size fashion blogger 1.27.18 8 resized

So I love it. The color, the lightweight, stretchy cushy knit, the color, the open sides, did I mention the color? I think this color will go with everything. Blue denim, black, grey, white. All the denims. It does need to be worn over something (have I mentioned the open sides?), so here I have it over a black cami, but you could put it over a turtleneck or a collared denim shirt, etc.

fashion schlub bettye rainwater long island plus size fashion blogger 1.27.18 4 resized

I’ve wanted to order from Ellos.com for a long time. They have Woman Within prices and plus-size sizing with a Scandinavian style aesthetic. A good combo. I will definitely be ordering from there again. Look, another first (a la my new year’s resolution)!

fashion schlub bettye rainwater long island plus size fashion blogger 1.27.18 2 resized

So. I did my own shoot. I finally got chestnut brown into my wardrobe. I DON’T NEED NO STINKIN’ RESCUING!!!

Pro-blogger tip: don’t photograph yourself seated in a really long top cuz it makes your legs look like they’re about 10″ long. Ha. Learn from my mistakes.

Bye now!
