The Quiet Season

So, Q1 2018 has been a quiet one for me. Especially after last year – finding out I was sick, in and out of the hospital, surgery, treatments, a family reunion trip, packing and moving to a new town and apartment…yeah. A lot went on last year.

This year, quiet. Feeling better, my scans and blood-work have all been clean, I’m more or less settled in the apartment. Caleb is not up to much walking so I don’t take him many places anymore…and my feet have been in such pain I’m reluctant to do anything that requires a lot of walking myself. My “special friend” up and disappeared so there have been no nice dates or outings. I’ve been reading a lot. A  LOT. And now with the MoviePass app have started going to the movies again.

So it’s been quiet. And solitary. And I like spending a lot of time alone…but lately I’m feeling it’s a little too much. I really never get lonely.  But when there are too many days in a row of nothing but work, reading, having dinner alone, working on the blog, going to bed around 9pm…I start to feel the solitude. And the sameness to the days. And the feeling of “is that all there is” starts creeping over me. Hopefully part of this is just the winter doldrums…that even though it’s Spring and we’re into April, it still feels like winter outside and I’m more apt to come home and want to get cozy and warm indoors than to head out to find a sunset. Maybe when the weather actually breaks I’ll feel different and more motivated to be outside and do different things.

My wardrobe has the winter doldrums, too! It’s been cold for so long so I’m still in my warm winter clothes…and I’ve had just about enough of them! I feel I’ve mixed and matched everything every which way and I’m really ready for some fresh items to wear!

So you’ve seen all these items before – the striped tee, the skinny jeans, the army green cascade vest – just maybe not the blush pink Vans (I did wear them in California in February) – but I don’t think I’ve worn all these pieces together before on the blog. My apologies on more indoor tripod shots, hopefully I can get some photographer time in the weeks ahead now that it’s staying light later.

My helpers. So, I’m not totally alone, but….

    1. Hi Joan! Thanks for the nice comment! I’m still getting used to the hair. I *do* love the ease of it. Some days it looks cute and pixieish to me…and some days it looks like Old Person Hair 🙂 I’m still trying to master making it look more the one way and not the other 🙂 Thanks for sticking around!

  1. Was just thinking how pretty your hair is getting. It sounds as if your weather is very like ours, we have had so much rain here and it has been cold, sun and warmer today, but not set to last.

    1. Thanks, Pauline. It’s raining here today as well. Rainy and cool. I wish I could stay in and just read in bed with Caleb and Jane but I have a ticket to take care of at the Village Hall…and then a mandatory stop at the bakery in town for a chocolate danish 🙂 I still see snow in the forecast for tonight and/or tomorrow but I don’t think I believe it. Hope you have warmer days ahead!

  2. I have been reading your blog for a while now and love it. You are such a good writer that I am compelled to send a quick comment. Also, really enjoy your sense of humor and perspective on life. I really like your outfits and sense of fashion —look forward to your posts.

  3. I can relate to your feeling. I feel a bit,, alone,, in winter too. But luckily it is starting to be better here. Your shoes ate great, love the colour! Great news on the blood tests, I can imagine that is stressful waiting for the results. Have a great Sunday Bettye!

    1. I got out a bit more this week, so I’m feeling a bit more human, which is good. The week ahead will be the opposite, as we prepare for a big event at work next Saturday, after that I’ll WANT to be home alone! Feast or famine, as they say.

  4. Scans and bloodwork ok! Congratulations! Here in The Netherlands we have our first real spring weekend. Everyone is outside: walking, bycycling, running. I made a tour of 25 kilometers in my mobility scooter (is that the correct expression?) and enjoyed it very much. Lots of newborn lambs, gooselings and budding trees. Hope there will be spring for you too soon, both literally and figuratively speaking.

      1. No, not really. I live only about ten kilometers to the north of Amsterdam. It is a rather densely populated area, but it is in the Dutch polders, so still meadows to find, some of which are protected, because of the rare meadowbirds who live here, e.g. godwits. No woods though.

      2. Polders and godwits! Charmings words/names I do not recognize! I have a friend who sometimes visits a friend in Amsterdam and she has enjoyed her time there very much. Other places always look so interesting….

  5. You know that I love those Van’s, right? And your hair is looking fab…it seems like it’s coming in with some curl to it. This time of year is just all around yucky and I think that definitely affects how we feel. I think that you’re right, once the temperatures start to consistently rise and you can get out and get up to some shenanigans you’ll start feeling better. xo

  6. I think this is a perfect year-round look. It doesn’t read winter doldrums to me at all. I do hear you though. I love to have a lot of alone time, but there has to be a good balance with social interaction.
You have had quite the year and I’m sure it has taken a lot to cope but you seem to be doing so, quite admirably.
Hang in there, spring is on its way!
