Valentine’s Day Shopping

As I was reminded in the RED VELVET HEART BOX aisle at CVS the other day, Valentine’s Day is not far off. And people can piss and moan all they want about it being a fake holiday, I don’t care. I love *every* holiday. I want to decorate for it and dress for it and plan a special meal for it and send out cards for it and give gifts for it. I just love holidays. I love any day that sets itself off from all the other days that just start to run together…get up go to work buy the groceries walk the dog make the dinner watch tv go to bed lather rinse repeat. I love the SPECIAL days.

SO, I will be needing a Valentine’s Day Outfit. I’ll be away that week (surprise trip ahead, woohoo!) so I have to plan early. Hence, this post. I thought we could do a little window shopping together…maybe you’ll even find something for yourself…it’ll be just like we’re girlfriends at the mall together.

My first stop was at CowCow. Remember The Christmas Dress? That was from CowCow. They have every style of clothing imaginable, in umpteen sizes (including plus sizes up to 5x (which they call xxxxx-large), in every graphic conceivable. So I just knew they’d have some good Valentine’s dresses.

Hart’s Long Sleeve Skater Dress from CowCow (sizes xs through xxx-large). This is just a fun graphic dress. It’s long-sleeved so you could wear it on its own or under a black or grey cardi or blazer.

Chocolate Pink Hearts Gift Wrap Reversible Skater Dress also from CowCow (size xs through xxx-large). I love pink and brown together! I would totally wear this with my oversized pink chenille cardigan and blush pink slip-on sneakers (that I’m actually still searching for)!

Then I hit Nordstrom.com where there were TONS of things in their plus size section, but I narrowed it down to a few favorites.

If I was going out to a fancy, romantic dinner, I’d love a dress like this. An easy loose shift style in a feminine color…and the ruffled sleeves are short enough to not fall into my fancy soup.

Tahari Bell Sleeve Ruffle Shift Dress • Tahari • $138

nordstrom 1

If I was going out for Galentine’s drinks with my girls, this would be amazing. Over a white tee and under a denim jacket. With those same blush slip-on sneakers I’ve yet to find.

ELVI Nude Sequin Slipdress • $85

nordstrom 2

This dress would be perfect if I was making dinner at home for a special guy.

Soprano Tie Front Lace Dress • Soprano • $55

nordstrom 3

And if it was a casual rom-com movie night at home with (chocolate drizzled caramel) popcorn, this would be so cozy for curling up on the sofa.

Caslon(R) Chenille Poncho • Caslon • $66.33

nordstrom 4

What do you think? I’m not sure what I’ll be doing on Valentine’s Day because, as I said, I’ll be away…so it’s sort of hard to pick what to bring to wear. I think last year I was stuck in a snowstorm in Maine!

Which do you like??

What the Holidays Mean to Me

IT’S CHRISTMAS!!!

Well, almost.

I don’t care what holiday you celebrate or what religion you are, I think the end of the year is a good time to reflect on the year past and maybe, just maybe, how we can do better, be better,  in the year ahead. How we can be more kind and more loving. How we can be more caring and thoughtful to the needs of others.

It’s a time to make a point of checking in with family and friends you maybe haven’t seen or heard from in awhile. Shouldn’t we be doing that all the time? Sure. But. Life. I always feel like holidays are reminders to do the things we might forget the rest of the time – Let People Know You Love and Care About Them.

The holidays are also an excuse to celebrate. Eat a little too much. Have a cocktail. Stay out late. Meet up with friends. Do the things we’re “too busy” for so much of the time.

Be a little frivolous. Give gifts. Wear a fun dress! I like to do that! Last week was the Staff Holiday Party at work with an Ugly Christmas Sweater theme…and I took it one step further and got this vintage Christmas wrapping paper looking dress from Cow Cow.

Cow Cow makes a gajillion different customizable items and have a kazillion different ready-made prints and patterns on every theme imaginable. And many items go up to plus size 5xl. That’s what I got and it’s actually a little large, I could have gotten a 4xl and it wouldn’t have been slipping off my one shoulder. It’s also mad affordable.

You can find them on their own website and on Amazon. I think there’s more variety on their website but items are cheaper on Amazon, and especially if you have Amazon Prime you won’t pay shipping. Just be forewarned, if you want something specific in a holiday theme be sure to order well before the holiday because shipping takes much longer, although for $20 they can expedite shipping and you can get your wacky Christmas dress to you in time for your holiday staff party!

Hope you’re taking some time this holiday season to reflect and breathe and visit with loved ones.

What I’m Wearing:

Today I’m linking up with Elegantly Dressed and Stylish for the Turning Heads Linkup. Jess looks To. Die. For. in a military-inspired blazer. I’m also linking-up with The Saturday Share Link-up on Not Dressed as Lamb and there are many other lovely ladies there to check out as well!

My Week in Review: Weeks 40-43

Ooh, I’ve been remiss! In my defense: Holiday and Sick. So I’m doing a big Week(s) in Review catch-up here and can then proceed as usual starting next week. Do you guys even *like* Week in Review? I’m coming up on Fashion Schlub’s 1 Year Anniversary and am thinking about switching some things up. I feel like I get more new people liking and commenting on the WiR posts, which I guess is good? I don’t know? I’m just stumbling my way along in Blog-Land. Thoughts?

Gosh, THIS seems forever ago! I’m actually just taking the tree *down* this weekend. Sadface.

1

Janey was helping not helping decorate the tree. Funny little crooked-faced cat.

2

Janey loves sitting with me at the computer. And the sofa. And bed. And the toilet. You get the picture.

3

I’ve been trying to eat more fruit. My reward for eating an orange is a vegan gingerbread cupcake from Batata Cafe in Northport.

4

I love old building advertising. I loved painted signs, I think they’re so much more charming than big plastic or polyvinyl (or whatever those canopy type things you see everywhere now) signs.

5

Meh. I so loved the other book of hers I read, Secrets of a Charmed Life…I was disappointed by this one.

6

The last day of work before vacation is lovely. We’re all so productive and get just tons of work done.

7

I drank a toast to the start of vacation. Alright. I drank a *couple* toasts.

8

Exmas Eve with my baby.

9

Christmas Day. We exchanged gifts at my apartment then went to dinner at our favorite Chinese restaurant and drove around looking at Christmas lights. It was a nice low-key day. I like a low-key holiday.

10

My boy.

11

We drank a toast to the holiday. Alright. We drank *several* toasts to the holiday.

12

I LOVED The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman. Do recommend.

13

Ha ha. Christmas had too many toasts and threw up in their front yard.

14

I spread my friendship wings (ha ha, someone dear to me used that phrase once when I was making a new friend and it has just always stayed in my heart and head) and made a new friend when we photographed one another for our respective blogs – Marcy of Fearlessly Just Me. You can see some photographs I did of her here.

15

That day we shot was cold and super windy and we were out in it all day and I got SICK. This is what sick looks like.

16

I’m trying to tackle some small projects in the apartment this winter. This is one of the cubbies staring me in the face when I sit at the computer and I was tired of it. The top pic is the before, the bottom is after. Ahh. But where did I put those chocolate chips??

18

Which brings us to today and it is snowing out so I’m staying in with some work, some projects and some reading. But not enough snacks. Unless I can find those chocolate chips.

19

Phew! All caught up! Holidays are over, tree is coming down, now the long cold blah winter begins. Will have to make effort to spice things up! Who’s with me??

Exmas Eve

exmas-eve-collage-7

My ex-husband and his new wife and family are thoughtful enough to invite me to their house each year for Xmas Eve dinner and festivities (do you get it now? EX-mas Eve? How long do you think I’ve been waiting to use THAT title?!?). Modern Family, amiright??

fashion-schlub-bettye-rainwater-plus-size-12-24-16-2-resized

It had been rainy all day but we had a little sun-show in the late afternoon so the girl and I ran out to do a quick photo shoot of my Christmas Eve outfit. I opted for low-key and comfy in this (favorite) black and white striped swing dress from Old Navy under the army green cascade vest by Ava & Viv at Target. A super cute infinity scarf from one of my sweet work officemates (the other one gave me Peppermint Moonshine !!! So no less sweet) kept my neck warm. I find that if my feet, neck, hands and ears are warm, I’m good. I can manage with just a light jacket. I think my knee-high brown boots would have worked here, too, but…they shrunk since last winter.

At what age is it still appropriate to sit on the floor with the animals at parties and social gatherings? Cuz I’d like to go back to that age, please and thank you.

fashion-schlub-bettye-rainwater-plus-size-12-24-16-4-resized

Do you dress fancy or comfy for the holidays? Being plus size, comfort is paramount. I try to be color appropriate, but over the years I have definitely moved away from “dressed up” to more comfy. I remember the days of buying a “holiday outfit,” that would only get worn once or twice. Those days are gone! I prefer to invest my clothing budget in a coat or bra or something that I’m going to wear Every Day.

exmas-eve-collage-6

I usually bring my boy Caleb to the ex’es…but he’s just been so dotty, I didn’t want him to get in trouble for not hearing people tell him to move or go lay down or whatever. This is Hannah, the matriarch of the family. She’s the sweetest dog on the planet. And that’s my baby girl, fancy in a red dress.

fashion-schlub-bettye-rainwater-plus-size-12-24-16-3-resized

I feel like I belong in the woods in this outfit. I am a Holiday Woodland Sprite. I may or may not have had a nip or two of Peppermint Moonshine this day.

exmas-eve-collage-5

I love watching the kids open their gifts.

fashion-schlub-bettye-rainwater-plus-size-12-24-16-5-resized

These booties from Avenue are super comfy. They’re wide width and have like a tongue opening at the front so they’re not tight across the front of my fat shins like most booties are. I wish I could find something a little sleeker looking that also fit well but…such is life.

The universal sign for DON’T. TAKE. MY. PICTURE. Not hard to guess whose sister SHE is.

Do you ever shop online at ASOS? You should. Besides having amazing selections of both straight and plus sizes, they have a video feature called “Catwalk,” where you can see each and every item worn by a model and walked down the runway. In video you can tell much better what the fabric is like. Is it stiff and unmoving? Is it flowy and drapey? I love fabric that moves nicely like this vest.

exmas-eve-collage-2

Somewhere in the world is a picture of me at 9 years old in a weird bathing suit at a park overlooking the ocean in La Jolla, California…making That. Same. Exact. Face. Apples, man.

exmas-eve-collage-3

Thanks for joining me for Exmas Eve…I know I’m a little behind with this post but I’ve been busy. And sick. I have The Cough That Will Just Not Die. I think I need a milkshake.
