My 10 Favorite Outfits of 2017

AKA It Was Too Cold Last Week to Get a New Outfit Photographed (if I’m being honest) So Let Me Recycle Some from Last Year. In my defense there WAS a snow bombogenesis cyclone, or whatever they ended up calling it. Translation: there was a lot of snow, a LOT of wind, and temperatures in the single digits all week. I thought I would be able to make some new outfits out of the items from last week’s winter haul, but in reality I sent everything back except one thing – that’s a conversation for another day. So, blah blah blah, I have nothing new to post this week. But I do like taking a look back over the past year and revisiting my outfits, sharing with you what worked or didn’t work for me. So. That’s what I’m gonna do!

#10 – Old Navy striped dress with Charlotte Russe tencel button-down and my beloved Superga velcro sneakers. I love an easy outfit. I love stripes. I love this tencel blouse over just about anything. Win win win.

#9 – Hey look, the tencel button-down again! This time with a grey long sleeved tee from Avenue and this amazing Lucky Brand cardigan (rented from Gwynnie Bee), over Charlotte Russe cropped skinny jeans. I love the concept of layering, and it looks so great on slim straight bodies. I have a hard time making it work right, or look right to me, on ME. Still, this was a good attempt.

#8 – This time I’m repeating the Charlotte Russe skinny jeans…now with a white linen blend tee from J. Jill and a dreamy Johnny Was kimono rented via Gwynnie Bee. This kimono was so so pretty.

#7 – Hey, guess what I’m wearing again? The Charlotte Russe skinny jeans and the linen blend tee from J. Jill. This time with a lightweight cardigan from Torrid. And my Supergas. First day wearing them. And I fell on a hill and almost rolled into the pond in them!

#6 – Ah, the much-loved (and much-worn!) magic black (or maybe it’s black magic!) swing dress from Asos…with the much sought-after denim jacket from JC Penneys, a borrowed leopard scarf, my Gorjana hoop earrings from Nordstrom, with lined footless tights from Maurice’s and black booties from Avenue. Super comfy and can go just about anywhere.

#5 – Another Old Navy jersey knit dress with the ochre chenille cardigan from Target that I am UB-SESSED with. The color is amazing, it’s super soft and cozy…and the length is perfect for dresses or pants. Same tights and boots as above.  Vintage Echo scarf that belonged to my mother. Thanks, Mommy!

#4 – A super cute botanical print top by Junarose from PlusBKLYN under olive green fleece cardigan from Rainbow, black leggings by Faded Glory from Walmart, with my comfiest sneakers from Adidas.

#3 – Uh-huh. I wore a dress that looks like vintage Christmas wrapping paper. I’m a real bad-ass. Come on – how cute is it?? The dress is from Cow Cow, the black cardi is Old Navy…tights and booties same as above.

#2 – Nothing dramatic here, but a solid pulled together look that I’ll wear a gazillion times. Old Navy striped jersey knit dress (yes, I have a lot of them!), Old Navy cardigan, golden mustard scarf from TJ Maxx, otk boots from Avenue.

And my #1 Favorite Outfit of 2017 is this amazing bird print dress by Junarose, from PlusBKLYN. I know this isn’t much of an “outfit,” it’s just a stand-alone dress. But that’s what makes it So Perfect!

I’m sure you noticed there’s a lot of repetition among my favorite outfits. I’m grateful to have so many pieces I like enough to wear repeatedly! I feel like I’ve chosen well when something gets a lot of wear.

I’m not putting links to the items cuz they’re all old and out of stock (well, the two Junarose items might still be available on the PlusBKLYN site – they were still there the last time I browsed there). But they’re mostly such basic items, each of the mentioned sites probably has something extremely similar.

Thanks for taking the little walk down memory lane with me!

Plus Size Bag Lady

I am actually NOT a “bag” lady. I’m in awe of women who change their bags out daily to coordinate with their outfits, switching necessities back and forth. To be perfectly honest, I’m way too lazy for that! But I’d like to be a little more “accessory-coordinated,” and have some *fun* bags. Uhm. Purses. Fun purses.

I tend to find one bag that works for me and use it til it’s falling apart. I have so many “must haves” that it’s difficult to find something appropriate.

  • Must at least have the option of being cross body. I have sort of sloping shoulders I guess and bags on my shoulder just slip off and I need to have my hands free cuz I’m always carrying a million things in and out of the car.
  • Not leather but attractive.
  • Affordable.
  • Easy to get in and out of.
  • Durable. I don’t want to have to be so careful and worry about scuffing it.
  • I need to like the way it looks!
  • It should be proportionate to my frame. I love a teeny tiny purse, really a “wallet on a leash,” but I think that looks silly on my body.
  • The first bag I buy must be a season-appropriate neutral.

So yesterday, with no forethought or planning (GASP), I perused the pocketbooks at TJ Maxx. I tried to not overthink it and just grab anything that ticked all my boxes.

And here they are:

They’re very different but would all suit my needs for a fall/winter bag.

I brought home two to look at with some fall outfits. What are your thoughts? If I could only keep one, which one should stay and why??

Are you a one-bag woman or do you switch out multiples depending on your outfit?

Building a Wardrobe: Part 1

G-A-A-A-A-A-H !!!!! Ha. I’ve always had a closetful of clothes, but I’ve really never had a WARDROBE. A collection of pieces that make sense for my life, *all* parts of my life, that all go together in different ways to create different outfits and looks, with *all* the necessary components. Probably *most* of the time, the majority of my closet is full of “things that don’t have the things they need to go with to make a complete outfit.” The sundress and lil cardi that are super adorable, but not the right shoes – so all that adorableness goes unworn. The leggings and sneakers that make up 2/3 of the perfect weekend errand-running outfit, but no tee shirt long enough to cover…things that need to be covered, so no perfect errand-running outfit. And so on.

TJ Maxx Dressing Room Try-on

So in all my recent new trying to look better and be better-ness, I’ve been reading about “building the perfect capsule wardrobe,” a concept that has apparently been around since the 70s, that I, in my not-fashion-focused-fog, have totally missed. I’ve read articles and watched videos and stalked Pinterest boards…and have seen wardrobes that are enviable and admirable and seem So Simple. And yet. Oofah. Not. So. Simple.

Kinda cute, but way too see-through. Fail. * Spense Woman 3x

I’ve compiled a list. A wonderful list. Simple basics that will go together in many different ways (think of every article you’ve read entitled “Create 37 Different Outfits Out of 3 Basic Pieces”). And they will mix and match harmoniously and I shall never be outfitless again.

Was a weird stretchy-knit-hugging-all-bumps fit. Fail. * Andrea Jovine 3x

But the list is The Easy Part. I chose a palette for spring into summer: *mostly* (cuz I’m only human and can’t TOTALLY stay within a 4-color palette) black, white, grey, olive green…with a few accents sprinkled in of soft pinky-blush and pale blue.

Here is My List:

medium wash denim

light blue

5 knit PULLOVERS/KIMONOS/CARDIGANS to coordinate w palette

navy/white stripe tee shirt dress
black/white stripe tee shirt dress

white basketball sneakers
black slip-on sneakers
black flats
leopard flats
brown faux leather sandal
sandal w gold something

Looks pretty simple, right? Nothing really out of the ordinary. But now I have to find these things THAT FIT ME, that I can AFFORD…and that I actually LIKE. Ha.

Meh. Pass. * Sorry, didn’t note brand or size

My goal is to have 10 work outfits – so I can go two weeks without repeating an entire outfit. I can repeat pieces, but not an entire outfit. And 4-5 ath-leisure (my new favorite term in the whole wide world) slash “going to Brooklyn/having coffee/going to art galleries with friends” outfits. I don’t think I *need* more than that. I think that’s a reasonable goal.

Oh. So no.  * d. jeans (high waist skinny), size 22-24

SO – in the attempt of reaching that goal, I have been doing a whole lotta trying on…and a whole lotta returning. Sadface. Shopping not so fun when you’re larger than the largest sizes in most stores. But I’m powering through. So I’ll be sharing with you some of my try-ons – good and bad…and updating you on how the whole Capsule Wardrobe Building thing is going.
