Week in Review: Week 109

Another week. Those suckers are really piling up, huh??

Cat-sitting.

IMG_0820[1].jpg

The podiatrist did magic and I had practically pain-free feet for a couple days. It’s wearing off now and I go back tomorrow to see what’s next.

Puppy-sitting.

The trees have eyes.

IMG_0843[1]

Snow….

IMG_0893[1]

And more snow. Caleb had a really good week. I’m grateful.

The kids.

I went for a new mop-head, ie, Target is the Devil’s Work.

img_09171.jpg

Lots of busy things in the week ahead – work is very¬†busy, some things are going to get done around the apartment so I need to ready my space for that and I have another podiatrist appointment. I’m sort of feeling on auto-pilot, trying to get done everything that needs to get done without stressing. If I can get through to Friday this week I think I’ll be okay.

Hope you’re having a calmer week.

Week in Review: Week 99

The week began with snow on the ground and puppies all over the apartment. Shocker. Ha ūüôā It was a full week back to work after the holidays and being sick and snow days.

IMG_9529

It was still cold.

IMG_9536

So, for better or worse, I was super bundled up.

IMG_9533

In the interest of my “pamper myself more” resolution, I did get flowers from Trader Joe’s for the apartment. In case you don’t live near a field of wild flowers or your city’s floral wholesale district, I believe that Trader Joe’s is THE best source for a large selection of reasonably-priced, healthy cut flowers. For $12 I have flowers in the bedroom, bathroom and living room. I’d have split them up even more but I still have not unpacked all the vases (because there’s nowhere to put them when I do). I usually buy three different varieties then mix them all together into bouquets.

The street I usually turn up to come home was closed off at both ends so kids could sled. How sweet is that?

IMG_9537

One more present under the tree. See those starburst lights? Fun, right? It’s an app called kirakira+. It¬†was .99 but that felt worth it to me for all the Christmas pics I take.

IMG_9543

Still snow.

IMG_9551

Remember a couple months ago I did that photoshoot with Jennifer from Peanut&Pip Photography? I got the rest of the pictures and am In Love with them! These are my favorites…

Gorgeous, right?? She does¬†such¬†beautiful work…if you’re local and want family portraits…she’s your gal.

That was my week. Lots of snow and puppies. Not expecting much different in the week ahead. Well, maybe mud and puppies.

Week in Review: Week 98

Well, THAT was an exciting week! Ha ha, just kidding. I’ve barely left the apartment since New Year’s Day. I had some sort of evil stomachey thing for two days and then we had SUPER SNOW BOMBOGENISIS so two snow days from work…and then the weekend! I HAVE to go out this morning because I’m out of everything…and to make sure the winds didn’t re-snow the car in since being shoveled out on Thursday. So, I’ve just been a hermit recluse, which is really my favorite way to be anyway (yes, I am my mother). But I really needed that. Tomorrow will be back to the real world.

So we start off with some pics from 2017 – the top nine pictures from my two Instagram accounts – the first is Fashion Schlub, the second is Bettye Rainwater Photography, in case you were interested in following.

IMG_9469IMG_9472

I started off the new year with a nice day in Brooklyn with a friend. Breakfast at Egg, then driving around a bit in the bitter cold just seeing the sights. That’s one of my favorite things to do.

IMG_9482

IMG_9479IMG_9480

Then the snow came. I know this doesn’t look like much but I don’t usually have snow on my little porch at¬†all. It was mad windy, yo. It just occurred to me I should find a new place to hide my spare key (I’m notorious for locking myself out) because right now it’s buried under a ton of snow. Oh gosh, I hope I didn’t just jinx myself.

IMG_9494

The puppies were not concerned about the snow in the least. I’ve been dog-sitting this week so have many puppies.

IMG_9505IMG_9507

Since it has been so bitterly cold they only go out for a few minutes at a time.

IMG_9513IMG_9522

But I love the snow. I love the quiet when it’s falling. I love that it covers everything up at a time when things are brown and bare. I love that it slows down the world. And traps you inside. I *really* love snow days (ha ha). In Bettyeland it would snow heavily right at Christmas and the ground wouldn’t be seen again until the crocuses start to bloom in March/April.

IMG_9525

And at the end of this week I had the surprise of being mentioned in a Ravishly feature on plus-size fashion in the workplace. That was kinda cool!

img_9526.png

So that was my quiet week – just me and the puppies and the snow. Real life will start barging in today when the vet comes to check on Caleb…and I have to lug cardboard and online shopping returns out to my car…and grocery shop and pick out outfits for the week…and blah blah blah. Real life. Am grateful for my little respite from it.

And on we go….

Week in Review: Week 95

I’m not sure I remember last week. Good thing I took pictures.

We had snow.

IMG_9167

I watched my hair grow.

Vegan bridal shower cake.

You didn’t think the whole thing was gonna rhyme, did you??

IMG_9181

My first acai bowl. It’s lovely, but come on – this is a dessert thing, not a breakfast thing.

IMG_9193

I finally wore the floral top from Rainbow Shop (oh my gosh, I cannot stop!).

IMG_9202

I wish I had an elephant on my Christmas stocking.

IMG_9207

I entered Caleb’s snowy picture in an online photo contest and they used the picture as an advertisement for the contest CUZ CALEB IS SO GOSHDARN SWEET. If you felt like voting for my lovely picture (no pressure), go HERE and “like” the picture. Give the link a couple seconds to get you to the right page (the picture below without the text on the pic). That would be so lovely of you.

IMG_9229

And here’s REAL Caleb in the snow. Cuz we had more snow.

IMG_9249

Went to Chinese dinner with my friends.

IMG_9256

Christmas lights.

IMG_9258

This happened.

IMG_9267

Work staff holiday party.

IMG_9279

Wow. There was more going on than I thought.

Bettye out.

Weeks in Review: 45-53

I promised you a Week(s!) in Review, and here it is! Don’t worry that it’s 8 weeks long – I really mostly hibernate in Jan/Feb every year. It’s cold, it’s dark, bleh. Most days I’m home from work by 4:30, I take off my bra (OH, THE JOY), put on comfy clothes and just relax alone at home.

img_5966

In yesterday’s Catching Up¬†¬†post I mentioned my highly technical “tipsy tripod.” I forgot I had a pull-back shot of it, so this is what I’ve been using when I shoot in the apartment. Fortunately Caleb usually¬†naps¬† supervises from his sofa vantage point or I’d be afraid of him just touching these tables and toppling everything over. They’re very lightweight.

A sample shot from “the studio.”

img_6030

I just thought this was a good message to be driving around in the world. Sometimes I can use a reminder. I was actually on the way to a friend’s birthday meetup that day and it *was* a good day.

img_6117

And then we went to Maine. It was supposed to be a 2-night stay, but due to WINTER it became a 4-night stay. So I wore this outfit A LOT. I had my long silk underwear on underneath so I was super sweaty cozy on the flight, but I was grateful when we got to 9-degree Maine.

img_6123

We discovered an awesome vegan restaurant called Green Elephant right around the corner from the hotel and we ate there two nights. You have no idea How Nice it is to actually have MULTIPLE OPTIONS in a restaurant. I had the Chocolate Orange Mousse Pie. It was UH-mazing. If you’re ever in Portland, even if you’re not vegan, you should have a meal there. My traveling companion is a confirmed carnivore AND amazing cook and she really raved about the food.

img_6143

The view out our hotel window. It was ALWAYS snowing. Sometimes harder, sometimes softer, but snow was falling from the sky the entire time we were there. Which is why our flights kept being cancelled.

img_6142

Good thing I brought activities!

img_6154

There was a cute lil park right outside our hotel with these fun lighted trees.

img_6165

Caleb (the tiny one) was hanging with his cousins back on also snowy Long Island while I was away. The ex sent lots of pictures so I could see how he was doing.

img_6162

And FINALLY there was a non-snow day on Tuesday and we hightailed it out of Maine by rental car. Just in time because they commenced having snow-storms again the very next day.

img_6168

I was happy to be home AND HAVE SOMETHING DIFFERENT TO WEAR. I had a Gwynnie Bee package waiting for me with this and another sweater in it.

img_6184

The kids were happy to be home as well.

img_6218

And yesterday, I finally got to a sunset for the first time in ages. It was windy and freezing and we only stayed long enough to take a couple pictures…but it was nice to see the sky again.

I was *supposed* to be blog photo-shooting this morning but I woke up to dense fog and misty skies…so we’ve rescheduled for tomorrow. So I *will* have some outfit posts up soon – one top I am IN LOVE with…and it’s even a TREND item and that’s not usually my thing, but. I’m excited to share with you.

Hope you’re all having a nice weekend.

xoxo Bettye

Week in Review: Week 44

This week was work work work cough cough cough. I’m just feeling a lot of negative input from around my life and the people close to me. A lot of illness, sadness, loss. I really need to find a little bright spot in the week ahead.

This was the night I said goodbye to my daughter…as she is returning to Florida to live. Caleb and I went over to see her one last time. I know she’ll be back soon to visit…but it is just not the same.

img_5899

If you follow me on Instagram you’ll have seen this – a Throwback Thursday to my Very First Outfit of the Day post back in September 2015.

img_5905
Karen Kane swing dress, 3x; Kohl’s Apt 9 cardigan, 3x; Old Navy flipflops

Getting ready for a photo shoot that didn’t happen.

img_5921

Most every night this week I came straight home from work and got on the sofa with a book. I didn’t even feel like being on the computer. And I ALWAYS feel like being on the computer. So I was very happy when a friend was able to go into Brooklyn with me yesterday to see the Marilyn Minter “Dirty Pretty” exhibit at Brooklyn Museum. Very interesting.

img_5938img_5942

We sat and watched this film several times through, it was mesmerizing, this is just about 30 seconds of it. It was the size of the wall, so maybe…14′ high by like 20′ across.

And this one also…

We looked at some other exhibits but as soon as we realized it was snowing we hightailed it out because driving in snow is one of my least favorite things to do! This was as soon as we left the museum…but it took over 2 hours to get home and by that time the roads were not good ūüė¶

img_5950

And now I’m on day two of a three day weekend and then it’s back to work…and some sad things. So…I’ve got my eyes open for¬†a “nice” opportunity because I could really use that this week.

Hope you all have some joy this week ahead.

My Week in Review: Weeks 40-43

Ooh, I’ve been remiss! In my defense: Holiday and Sick. So I’m doing a big Week(s) in Review catch-up here and can then proceed as usual starting next week. Do you guys even *like* Week in Review? I’m coming up on Fashion Schlub’s 1 Year Anniversary and am thinking about switching some things up. I feel like I get more new people liking and commenting on the WiR posts, which I guess is good? I don’t know? I’m just stumbling my way along in Blog-Land. Thoughts?

Gosh, THIS seems forever ago! I’m actually just taking the tree *down* this weekend. Sadface.

1

Janey was helping not helping decorate the tree. Funny little crooked-faced cat.

2

Janey loves sitting with me at the computer. And the sofa. And bed. And the toilet. You get the picture.

3

I’ve been trying to eat more fruit. My reward for eating an orange is a vegan gingerbread cupcake from Batata Cafe in Northport.

4

I love old building advertising. I loved painted signs, I think they’re so much more charming than big plastic or polyvinyl (or whatever those canopy type things you see everywhere now) signs.

5

Meh. I so loved the other book of hers I read, Secrets of a Charmed Life…I was disappointed by this one.

6

The last day of work before vacation is lovely. We’re all so productive and get just tons of work done.

7

I drank a toast to the start of vacation. Alright. I drank a *couple* toasts.

8

Exmas Eve with my baby.

9

Christmas Day. We exchanged gifts at my apartment then went to dinner at our favorite Chinese restaurant and drove around looking at Christmas lights. It was a nice low-key day. I like a low-key holiday.

10

My boy.

11

We drank a toast to the holiday. Alright. We drank *several* toasts to the holiday.

12

I LOVED The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman. Do recommend.

13

Ha ha. Christmas had too many toasts and threw up in their front yard.

14

I spread my friendship wings (ha ha, someone dear to me used that phrase once when I was making a new friend and it has just always stayed in my heart and head) and made a new friend when we photographed one another for our respective blogs – Marcy of Fearlessly Just Me. You can see some photographs I did of her here.

15

That day we shot was cold and super windy and we were out in it all day and I got SICK. This is what sick looks like.

16

I’m trying to tackle some small projects in the apartment this winter. This is one of the cubbies staring me in the face when I sit at the computer and I was tired of it. The top pic is the before, the bottom is after. Ahh. But where did I put those chocolate chips??

18

Which brings us to today and it is snowing out so I’m staying in with some work, some projects and some reading. But not enough snacks. Unless I can find those chocolate chips.

19

Phew! All caught up! Holidays are over, tree is coming down, now the long cold blah winter begins. Will have to make effort to spice things up! Who’s with me??

My Week in Review: Week 3

Went with my BFF to a Kenny Scharf exhibit preview at Nassau County Museum of Art. ¬†It is said that Scharf’s work “leaves you with hope, joy, play and optimism, and a sense of love” and can’t we all use a little of that??

IMG_9828

There was an amazing room, a la PeeWee’s Playhouse, where Scharf painted plastic objects of all sorts (he was a serious recycler and upcycler) in crazy bright neon colors. It was a magical place that I never wanted to leave.

IMG_9852

IMG_9834

Even cool artist types do silly touristy things in photos.

Local museums are a great resource. You don’t always have to travel into a city to see world class art.

IMG_9875

We had coffee and vegan goodies at Sweet to Lick, a local vegan bakery. This tiramisu blondie was YUM.

IMG_9876

I tried a little shopping. I loved these dresses but was uncomfortable with the thinness of the material and the way it touched my belly. After some reading and soul-searching this week I may reconsider my decision and go try them again.

AMB_4520 FB

On Sunday I had a photo shoot with a new photographer. It was very cold and *VERY* windy down by the water so it might have been the shortest photo shoot EVER. But the pictures are pretty amazing, so, YAY. You’ll see them in the next outfit post.

IMG_9881

We had a spring snowfall. It was one of those very pretty snows that was light and clung to everything, creating lace.

IMG_9884

I heart snow. Sorry. I hadda do it.

IMG_9890

Only one Outfit of the Day post this week. Then I had to send this beautiful kimono back. Sadface.

My officemate was out sick one day…but we got a puppy to replace her!

IMG_9892 (1)

My daughter and I have kooky dreams. And then we were in Germany.

See ya next week!
